Van Gogh was born in 1853 in Holland. He was largely self-taught as an artist, but he did have help from his cousin. In 1886 he moved to Paris where he lived with his brother Theo. His brother was a dealer, so he introduced him to artists, like Gauguin, Pissarro, Seurat and Toulouse-Lautrec. Paris was where he discovered colour as well as his creative and expressive dashed brushstrokes.
In 1888 he moved to the south of France where he hoped to establish an artists’ colony there. He was joined briefly by Gauguin, but a number of arguments led Van Gogh into a fit of epilepsy, Van Gogh pursued his friend with an open razor, but was stopped by Gauguin, so Van Gogh cut off his own ear in a rage of madness.
In 1889, Van Gogh became a voluntary patient at St. Remy Asylum where he continued to paint. His colours softened in his paintings to mauves and pinks. His brushstrokes became dashes which were constructed into swirling shapes.
He died two days after he shot himself in 1890. In his lifetime he only sold one work.
