Two NNS Employees Receive Women in Business AwardsMary Cullen, director of Nuclear Propulsion, and Brandi Smith, construction engineering director for Gerald R. Ford (CVN 78), were recognized in December with Women in Business Achievement Awards for their leadership skills and community engagement.
Cullen is the nuclear director, general manufac-turing, within the nuclear propulsion division at Newport News. During her 29-year career, she has also worked in radiological control and nuclear production support and refueling. Outside the shipyard, she is the vice chair of the Trinity Lutheran School Board and a BayPort Federal Credit Union board member.
Smith is the acting construction engineering director for the aircraft carrier Gerald R. Ford (CVN 78). During her 12 years with Newport News, she has held several different positions in the CVN 78 Class Carrier Program. She is also a founding member of Girls with Engineering Minds in Shipbuilding (GEMS), a shipyard orga-nization that partners with local school systems to expose girls to science, technology, engineer-ing and mathematics (STEM) fields.
“Mary and Brandi demonstrate our diverse leg-acy of service, leadership and dedication to the shipbuilding profession and, as such, deserve this special recognition,” said Bill Bell, vice president of human resources and administra-tion. “They are leaders in their fields and in the community because of their expertise, commit-ment and strong work ethic. We celebrate and congratulate them on this achievement.”

Quinn also announced that the machine has been named, “Big Dave.” “Dave Williams bent pipes for Newport News Shipbuilding for 35 years and tragically passed away the day this machine arrived to the shop,” he said. “Dave was a major player in overseeing the build of this machine. The team unanimously decided to name the machine after Dave so that his memory will live on here in the Pipe Shop forever.”

HOLA and Jaycees Adopt Children for the HolidaysThe Hispanic Outreach and Leadership Alliance (HOLA) and The Apprentice School Jaycees adopted eight children for the holiday season. The two groups originally sponsored three girls; however, the heartwarming response by the members provided enough gifts to sponsor an additional five children. Exceeding the donations from last year, items collected included toys, clothes and gift certificates.
“Kids should get to enjoy this time of year, regardless of their situation,” said Vince Dellapenta (E69). “If there’s something I can do to help so they have a fond memory during Christmas or however they celebrate, it makes me feel good.”
Robert Kennedy (E74) said, “Activities and opportunities like Adopt-a-Family are dear to
me. I thoroughly enjoy giving in general, especially for the little ones.”
HOLA and The Apprentice School Jaycees would like to thank all who donated items and made the holiday season a special one for all the sponsored children this year.
Members of HOLA and Jaycees donated gifts during the holidays to sponsor eight children in the local community.

Holiday Giving cont.CONTINUED FROM PAGE 1
Employees at AMSEC also participated in holiday giving. At the Virginia Beach headquar-ters and at the NetCenter facility in Hampton, AMSEC employees collected toys to donate to the U.S. Marine Corps Reserve’s Toys for Tots campaign and to Carver Elementary School in Newport News. Employees also donated blankets, clothing, towels and toiletries to the Lighthouse Center, a homeless day program in Virginia Beach. For Thanksgiving, AMSEC collected canned goods and turkeys for the Foodbank of Southeastern Virginia and the Eastern Shore as part of its Mayflower Marathon weekend of giving.
In October, employees at AMSEC’s Hawaii office also banded together to donate 69 pounds of food to the Hawaii Foodbank.
“Year round, and especially during the holidays, we are encouraged to give back to our communities and to those in need,” said Bill Ermatinger, HII’s corporate vice president and chief human resources officer. “With these charitable donations and volunteer activities, we strive to build and support our communities. I’m proud to see the dedication and generosity of our employees.”
The charity drives come on the heels of the annual campaign benefiting the United Way of the Virginia Peninsula. In November, NNS and HII’s corporate office raised more than $2.1 million for the United Way between company and employee donations.

Dear Shipbuilders:
Welcome back to work. I hope you had a wonderful holiday season and that you had an opportunity to relax over the break. As we begin 2015, we are looking ahead to a busy year filled with many opportunities. This month, on January 17, the U.S. Navy will celebrate 60 years underway on naval nuclear propulsion. This is a significant accomplishment, and the work you do each day directly contributes to this achievement.
Building nuclear-powered warships takes discipline, precision and attention to detail. It also takes a strong commitment to safety and quality, to always making honest and ethical decisions, and to listening to diverse perspectives. Throughout the year, you will see an even greater emphasis on these attributes.
The year ahead will continue to be challenging as defense budgets continue to tighten. Performing well on our contracts and meeting our commitments will strengthen our ability to earn additional work. I believe we can meet these challenges while continuing to grow our business, but we must also continue to create a positive and engaging environment for all shipbuilders. If we do these things, I believe this year will be one of our best.
Thank you for your dedicated service and commitment to Newport News Shipbuilding, and for continuing our 129-year legacy of building the best, most complex ships in the world.
Sincerely,
Matt MulherinPresidentNewport News Shipbuilding
