I have some useless nuggets of informat ion for you this month.

Q : Why do men’s c lothes have buttons on the r ight whi le women’s have them on the lef t?A : When buttons were invented, they were very expensive and worn pr imari ly by the r ich. Since most people were r ight-handed, i t is easier to push buttons on the r ight through holes on the lef t . Because wealthy women were dressed by maids, dressmakers put the buttons on the maid’s r ight , where they have remained ever s ince.

Q : Why do X’s at the end of a let ter s igni fy k isses?A : In the Middle Ages, when many people were i l l i terate, documents were s igned using an X. Kissing the X represented an oath to fu l f i l obl igat ions speci f ied in the document. The X and the kiss eventual ly became synonymous.

Q : Why is shi f t ing responsibi l i ty to someone else cal led ‘passing the buck’?A : In card games i t was once customary to pass an i tem, cal led a buck, f rom player to player to indicate whose turn i t was to deal . I f a player did not want to assume the responsibi l i ty of deal ing, he would ‘pass the buck’ to the next player.

Q : Why are people in the publ ic eye said to be ‘ in the l imel ight ’?A : Invented in 1825, l imel ight was used in theatres and l ighthouses by burning a cyl inder of l ime, which produced a br i l l iant l ight . In the theatre, a performer ‘ in the l imel ight ’ was the centre of at tent ion.

Q : Why is someone who is feel ing great ‘on c loud nine’?A : Types of c louds are numbered according to the al t i tudes they at ta in, wi th nine being the highest. I f someone is said to be on cloud nine, that person is f loat ing wel l above worldly cares.

So now you know.

No. 228 The HaNoveriaNs Part 44

T h e d e a t h o f G e a r g e I VFor the next two years after his resignation from the navy, William, Duke of Clarence, waited in the wings of power occasionally emerging into the spotlight in his supporting role as heir to the throne. In 1829 he supported a Bill of Catholic Emancipation which would give followers of that faith freedom from restrictions on land inheritance, university education and army commissions. This made him popular with the public and gained for him the image of a tolerant liberal, something new in their eyes.By the early 1830s it became clear that the health of the King was steadily deteriorating, much to his brother’s distress and on the 26th June William was woken at 6am by Sir Henry Halford and informed that he was dead. William was King of England. It was rumoured that he promptly returned to bed as he wished to savour a new experience ‘having never yet slept with a queen’.William IV came to the throne at a time when the monarchy was very unpopular. George IV was known for his reckless spending and selfish indulgence with a very conservative political viewpoint. He was regarded with a mixture of loathing and contempt, no one regretted his death.No one expected any improvement during Williams reign and they were in for a pleasant surprise. His honest geniality and unaffected good humour restored the Royals to public affection and he obviously enjoyed his new life, taking every opportunity to appear in public. Even when performing duties of a formal nature, he broke all the rules. For instance, at his brother’s funeral, after having endured the service for two hours, he rose from his seat , thanked the Earl Marshall for making the arrangements and left.The King’s pleasure in his new prominence was rather spoiled

Page 7: Pickenhams' Periodical

by problems with his illegitimate children. Although the King was very easy going he felt he could shower them with honours and promotions without upsetting his aristocracy. He therefore proceeded cautiously, appointing his sons to be equerries and giving them higher positions as they became available. George became his Adjutant General and Adolphus commanded the Royal Yacht. This did not satisfy the Fitzclarences, who expected peerages, George was made Earl of Munster when he married the illegitimate daughter of Lord Egremont as his father-in-law subsidised the happy couple. Augustus became a Lord after his father forced him to take Holy Orders. Happily his daughters gave no trouble. Suitable marriages ensured that they were painlessly absorbed into society. They were a source of pleasure for William, their presence brightened up the court.Lady Wharncliffe commented ‘They are all you know pretty and lively and make society in a way that real princesses could not’.

One of the hardest conversations to have at the present moment surrounds the government’s current consultation on the redefining of marriage so that it would allow same sex couples to get married. It’s a difficult conversation because the government has already made it plain that in their view the consultation is not so much about whether the changed proposal should take place, but simply how. It’s also difficult because as the subject matters a great deal to those who would like to see the change made, any suggestion that it shouldn’t by those who take a more traditional view is quickly shouted down as ‘intolerant’, ‘bigoted’ and out of touch with modern society. The case is also made that not only is it right on the grounds of simple justice and equality, but that it would strengthen and endorse the age old ‘institution of marriage’ and support family life - but is this true? To understand why many in the Church (and indeed society at large) find this topic a ‘hot potato’ one needs to understand that the current trend to talk in terms of ‘same sex marriage’ and ‘straight marriage’ is highly misleading – there aren’t different types of marriage, there is just marriage! The traditional understanding of this has been for centuries, the coming together of one man and one woman, in a faithful loving commitment to the end of their natural lives, symbolised by the harmonious and complementary nature of their bodily union from which (all things being equal) children are the natural product and gift. Husband and wife become then, in a religious sense, ‘one flesh’ totally united and through which families are established and society populated. Standing up for this traditional and religious understanding of marriage is not for one moment to act in a narrow minded or bigoted way, or remotely to suggest that other forms of loving partnership aren’t possible – it’s simply to stand up for what is - and to simply say that however profound these other relationships might be – they are not marriage! To simply call a ‘tin of peas’ a ‘tin of carrots’ doesn’t make it so. So one might ask is this fair? Is this just? Well, in some ways, you could turn that question on its head, and ask is it fair for those who have a traditional understanding of marriage to suddenly have ‘the rug pulled out from under their feet’ and their understanding turned into something else? That’s not exactly fair either. Besides, our society already bars certain people from getting married; those who are under sixteen;

Page 15: Pickenhams' Periodical

The governing body of St Andrew’s C of E Primary School has been considering the future of the school and we are investigating the possibility of returning the school to it’s orginal Voluntary Aided Status (1855). The schoool became Voluntary Controlled in July 1959. We will be undertaking an initial consultation process this half term involving the whole community and the documentation relating to this wil l be made available locally via our website , in school , around the vil lage and in the church.

S T ANDREW ’S SCHOOL NEWS

those who are related to one another; those who are already married. Society has always tried to protect the innocent and preserve its cherished institutions – and many would argue that this redefinition of marriage will only result in undermining that institution. So what about equality and justice? Legally, same sex couples in ‘civil partnerships’ already have every legal and civil right enjoyed by married couples. This redefinition of marriage may seem all embracing, but it doesn’t do anything to enhance their equality in any sense - legally they already have it! Indeed, because legally this is so, many same sex couples in civil partnerships have already acknowledged that this proposed redefinition of marriage feels like ‘rocking the boat’ simply for the sake of it and so have taken the gracious decision of distancing themselves from it. As I mentioned right at the start of this letter, this is a very difficult conversation to have, and sadly hurt is caused on both sides which I absolutely deplore, but however much the government may feel that this is a ‘done deal’, people aren’t always prejudiced just because they stand up for a principle, and if you agree with me that the traditional understanding of marriage is worth preserving, then please may I encourage you to register your view on the ‘Coalition for Marriage’ Website (www.c4m.org.uk) . Who knows, perhaps our government will listen? Yours as ever, Stephen Thorp
