Pianos need ventilation, but thewrong kind of ventilation candamage them. The best locationfor your piano is in the center ofthe room or against a wall whichdivides two rooms. If possible, avoid placing it next to an exte-rior wall where outside weatherconditions might cause tonequality and volume to suffer. Ifthere is no other choice, how-ever, at least make sure that thepiano has adequate ventilation onall sides.
VENTILATION
Try not to place the piano near awindow. Its cabinet is made ofwood and must be protectedagainst direct sunlight, humidityand sudden changes in tempera-ture. Windows which open onthe out-of doors offer the leastprotection. If you must place thepiano near a window use a heavycurtain over the window for pro-tection.
AVOID HEAT
Keep the piano away fromsources of heat such as radiatorsor hot air registers. They maydamage the finish and internalparts causing tone and balance todeteriorate. Make sure that noradiant heat or hot air draftstrikes the piano directly.
ATTENTION AUXFENETRES
ATTENTION A LACHALEUR
Pianos work best and sound bestwhen the temperature and hu-midity are right. Proper ventila-tion is also important. Generallyspeaking, a relative humidity ofbetween 50 and 60 percent isideal for pianos. The use of ma-terials such as wood, felt andcloth in piano constructionmeans that many parts are quitedelicate. If not properly caredfor, they can be damaged easily. Therefore we are unable to as-sume responsibility for damageresulting from abuse or harshtreatment.
HOW HUMIDITYAFFECTS A PIANO
Felt, cloth, leather and the preci-sion wood parts – some of themmachined to tolerances as fine as1/100 mm – used in such criticalparts of the piano as the actionare extremely sensitive to humid-ity. Too much humidity will re-sult in dull hammer action andunclear tones, rusting of internalparts and sticking keys. Beforethis happens the piano should berepaired.
COMMENTL’HUMIDITE AFFECTELE PIANO
Your dealer can advise you howbest to compensate for climaticconditions in your area. How-ever, here are a few general tipsfor proper care. On cloudy orrainy days close all windows inthe piano room. Also, be sure toclose the top board each time af-ter playing. The piano’s thickcloth cover absorbs moisture indamp or rainy weather and shouldbe taken off and dried on cleardays. Be especially careful aboutexcessive moisture if you live inone of the following places:Along a seacoast or in a
rainy or humid region. In a valley, in a house facing
hills, or in an area with poordrainage.
In a concrete building notmore than one or two yearsold.
In an area where air exhaustsare directed into a room or ina dark, dank room.
In dunklen, feuchten, nachNorden gerichteten Räumen
COMMENT EVITERL’HUMIDITEEXCESSIVE
Too much humidity is a problem, but excessive dryness is an evenmore serious one, especiallywhere heating or cooling sys-tems are used to create artifi-cially dehumidified rooms. Usedin naturally dry climates the pi-ano has enough natural moisture
In trockenen Gegenden besitzt
ATTENTION A LASECHERESSEEXCESSIVE
to prevent excessive drying. However, if the air becomes toodry the wooden and felt compo-nents will shrink. In extremecases, the soundboard, joints andother laminated sections mayeven come apart, even thoughthey have been glued togethercarefully. Slight distortion of theparts may cause noise, and thetuning pins may work loose, making it difficult to keep thepiano in tune. To avoid exces-sive dryness it is best to keepsome kind of leafy plant or ahumidifier in the piano room.
AVOID SUDDENTEMPERATURECHANGES
When a cold room is warmedsuddenly, moisture will condenseon the piano strings and othermetal parts, causing them to rust.Felt parts will absorb moisture, dulling their action and resultingin unclear sound. Be especiallycareful about sudden tempera-ture changes when moving your
piano into a room in a cold cli-mate or into an airtight room ina concrete building.
PUT YOUR PIANOWHERE IT SOUNDSBEST
The piano should be placed in aroom where the sound will beevenly distributed. A roomwhere all the sound gathers inone spot will produce sound lagand echoes. The best room foryour piano is one in which itssound will reverberate to pro-duce pleasant, full-bodied toneswithout harsh echoes.
A heavy object may cause poortone or noisy vibrations if placedon the piano. A vase of flowersmay look attractive on the pianobut if it should spill and waterenter the piano serious damagecan result. Water will rust themetal parts of the piano and dam-age the hammer and action.Avoid costly accidents and neverplace anything except sheet mu-sic or a metronome on the piano.
l’alcool.Les liquides comme cosmé-
tiques, insecticides, aérosol, peinture, ou produits à basede pétrole.
ATTENTION A LAPOUSSIERE
NO COLOQUEOBJETOS ENCIMA DELPIANO
AVOID PLACING ORSPILLING ANY OF THEFOLLOWING ON THEPIANO
Plastic products (exceptpolyethylene)
Vinylprodukte alles, was Alkohol enthält
Vinyl productsAnything containing alcoholLiquids such as cosmetics,
insecticides, any kind ofaerosol, paint thinner orpetroleum-based products
DO NOT ALLOW THEPIANO TO BECOMEDUSTY
Dust can dull the hammer actionand cause noise. Dust the pianofrequently with a soft cloth orfeather duster and wipe the fin-ish with a soft cloth.
KEEP THE KEYBOARDCLEAN
The keyboard should be wipedperiodically with a soft, drycloth. Never use cleaners con-taining alcohol as the keys willbecome cracked. If the keyboardis very dirty, wipe it with a clothdipped in a solution of soap andwater and wrung out well. Thesame cloth should not be used forcleaning the surface of the piano, however. A good habit to culti-vate is never to play the pianowith dirty hands. That way thekeyboard will stay clean for along time.
TUNING ANDADJUSTMENT
Pianos are delicate instrumentswhich need professional atten-tion periodically. Basicallythere are two types of profes-sional piano care: tuning and ad-justment.Tuning means correcting thepitch of every note by retight-ening the strings. Each pianostring is normally stretched to apressure of about 90 kilograms(1981/
2pounds), but eventually it
will stretch further with use andlose some of its tension, causingthe piano to lose its correct pitch. The strings need to be tuned onceor twice a year to restore themto their proper tension.Adjustment involves the entirepiano action, keyboard and pedalmovements. Proper adjustmentis especially important for grandpianos. Whether the piano willperform properly or not dependson how accurately the adjust-ment is made.Tuning and adjustment should bedone by an expert. When yourpiano requires either one, askyour Yamaha dealer or call a spe-cialist. Your dealer can also ad-vise you about the interval be-tween adjustments for your pi-ano under the circumstances inwhich it is used.
