Companies and their business processes highly depend on their IT infrastructures. The demand of computing power increases continuous-ly, similarly to the performance of IT systems which also increases year by year. Due to the increasing demand for computing power, a large number of server rooms have been filled with hardware platforms that are very often underutilized. This makes today’s environment extre-mely complex and difficult to manage, leading to high costs due to personnel-intensive administration on the one hand and excessively required space on the other hand. For the operation of these systems the needed energy for power and cooling emerge as an increasing sha-re of the costs compared to the pure acquisition costs.

For many IT organizations the blade server environment, in combi-nation with virtualization technologies on various levels, is the IT infrastructure of choice to achieve considerable consolidation benefits. It also is the ideal basis for ensuring more flexible usage of server resources. A blade server is simply a smarter way of setting up an IT infrastruc-ture. Due to their design, blades offer compelling advantages such as improved cabling, rapid hardware provisioning, high computing den-sity and increasing management automation. Recent years have wit-nessed a dramatic turning point for blade technology, with enterprise datacenters increasingly adopting them for mainstream deployments. Bringing advantages in price-performance, power and cooling, reduced footprint, and management and control over rack-mounted servers, blades are proving themselves to be the form factor of choice for many large-scale server deployments.

Blade servers are the fastest-growing segment in the IT industry. They are already accounting for nearly 15% of all server shipments and are expected to grow to more than 23% in 2014.

Introduction

Page 4: Pi Pybx Family En

Blade servers integrate infrastructure components in a common housing. In addition to the server and storage blades, additional I/O componen-ts such as Ethernet, Fibre Channel and InfiniBand switches can also be integrated in the blade enclosure. Because of the greater server density, the primary attention initially was focused on server centralization and consolidation. Today companies are recognizing the management advan-tages and cost benefits as value drivers for blade technology.

Simplification and lower total costRack server requires many recurring parts, including cables, fan modules and supporting switches. In comparison to standard rack-mounted servers, the centralized architecture of a blade server with the integrated midplane, consolidates LAN and SAN access and the-reby reduces the number of interconnecting cables and components. Typically, the cost of a single blade is higher than the cost of a single rack-mounted server, but a 30 to 40 percent equipped blade enclosure will be more cost- effective than the equivalent rack-mounted servers. Furthermore blade servers have a smaller footprint than traditional tower or rack servers. Compared to these, blade servers can save up to 50% space.

Lower management costsBlade servers are designed to provide simplified server management and to require reduced operational expenses compared to rack-mounted servers. Blade servers combine server and storage capacity with networking components within a single enclosure and thus create the precondition for an easy management and lower management costs. The centralization of resources makes it easier to deploy servers, simplifies the administration and increases the control over the server.

Improved energy efficiencyBlade servers require less power than rack servers, because the infrastructure components are shared, the power supplies and fan modules have higher efficiencies and the energy management is better integrated. This aspect is of particular importance because the kilowatt-costs have risen over the past several years. Researches indicate that for every 1€ of new server spending, customers spend an additional 0.50€ annually for power and cooling, and if current trends continue, this ratio will reach even higher in the next five years.

Consolidated infrastructure Adding more and more servers in an existing environment incre-ases the complexity within the datacenter. The blade server concept simplifies the cabling of servers. Rack servers have to be connected via various connections to the outside world. Each additional rack server requires additional cables for power, Ethernet, Fibre Channel, KVM, cluster interconnect, etc. Additional blade servers can be integrated without additional cabling into the existing blade enclosure. The savings in cabling can be up to 70% versus rack servers. In addition, the blade concept provides modular upgrade path opportunities, so that new technologies can be integrated into existing environments.

Dynamic Virtualization

The server blades of the Fujitsu PRIMERGY BX900 are equipped with processors of the latest Intel® Xeon® processor 5600 and 7500 series as well as high memory expandability with up to 512GB per server blade. Various server boot options, e.g. from local HDDs or Solid State Drives, from a USB Flash module for VMware ESXi or via the network make the PRIMERGY BX900 server blades ideal for every application. The server blades are thus an excellent platform for both virtualized and physical environments. Together with the ServerView® Resour-ce Coordinator VE and Resource Orchestrator, the PRIMERGY BX900 makes a strong contribution towards simplified IT operation: physical and virtual servers are controlled in a standardized way via the same management console.

The integrated onboard 1 or 10 Gigabit Ethernet controllers support SR-IOV (Single Root I/O Virtualization). SR-IOV defines a method to share a physical function of an I/O port of the NIC without software emulation. This process creates a number of virtual functions per physical port of the I/O device. Each virtual function is directly assigned to a virtual machine, enabling for bypassing the software based virtual switch, thereby achieving near native performance for each virtual machine on a physical server.

Dynamic Availability

Within the PRIMERGY BX900 the ServerView® Resource Coordinator VE (RCVE) can be used to address unplanned downtime scenarios. By automatically triggering server switchover operations when a physical server fails, business applications can be resumed without any admi-nistrator intervention. Compared to manual recovery processes, server recovery time is reduced significantly, thus resulting in faster reaction to server failures. By leveraging this automated server switchover capability, RCVE enables the implementation of a very cost-effective high availability concept. The basic idea is to share one or a few spare servers between many production servers. This N+1 high-availability concept can drastically reduce the number of required non-productive spare systems, thus leading to increased efficiency in server operations. In addition to using RCVE’s auto recovery features for failed servers in unplanned downtime scenarios, the Resource Coordinator can also be used to address planned / maintenance scenarios through its server switchover functionality.

Dynamic Scalability

The design of the PRIMERGY BX900 is optimized for highest scalability and investment protection. The high-density of the system allows performance upgrades through the addition of further PRIMERGY BX900 units. In addition, the system architecture enables Fujitsu to offer two more blades than in a standard 10U server chassis – with a record-taking 18-blade design. Thanks to these extra blades, the Dynamic Cube immediately offers 12 percent more system performance. With space for up to 18 server blades, 8 connection blades, 6 power supply units and 2 management boards in a 10U high chassis, the PRIMERGY BX900 has the highest density in the blade server market.

Page 15: Pi Pybx Family En

Traditional I/O infrastructureEach server I/O adapter comes with a pre-assigned default physical network address (WWN or MAC) used to identify servers on SAN or LAN. This makes it necessary to reconfigure network settings when perfor-ming server deployment, maintenance and recovery tasks. Reconfigu-ration of the network settings normally involves many manual steps like re-cabling, and it requires the assistance of network and storage administrators. Depending on the coordination between the admin teams, network reconfiguration processes can considerably slowdown server admin tasks.

I/O virtualizationI/O virtualization technology puts an abstraction layer between the servers and the external networks.Instead of using default Media Access Control (MAC) addresses for Network Interface Controllers (NICs), and default World Wide Names (WWNs) for Host Bus Adapters (HBAs), virtual customer-defined addresses are used because they can be flexibly assigned to specific server blades. Although the hardware ships with default MAC addres-ses and WWNs, I/O virtualization resets these addresses prior to the boot sequence so that only the virtual addresses are used during operation. I/O virtualization lets server administrators add, maintain or failover servers without affecting complex network settings.

I/O virtualization with VIOMVIOM is an I/O virtualization technology specifically designed for blade server environments. VIOM uses a special server profile to store blade-specific information like I/O addresses, I/O connections or even boot parameters. Each server profile is stored in a central repository and serves as a pointer to a boot image, enabling administrators to run an application by simply assigning a profile to a server blade. As each profile can be moved not only within the same blade chassis, but also across hundreds of server blades residing in different chassis, VIOM pa-ves the way for substantial improvements in scalability and flexibility. In combination with the Intelligent Blade Panel (IBP) it is not only possible to keep MAC addresses constant, but also to keep the network path to a specific uplink. This is particularly useful in configurations where many customers, who reside in separate physical or virtual networks, should be operated within the same blade chassis. If a blade is moved or exchanged, IBP makes sure that the new blade will be connected to the correct customer network segment. The VIOM approach goes far beyond virtualization of WWN and MAC addresses of a server. In addition to WWN and MAC addresses, a VIOM server profile can contain other parameters like BIOS settings, also making it possible to keep those settings constant in server switchover or failover scenarios. The ultimate goal is to virtualize as many server parameters as possible to have a stateless blade, offering maximum flexibility for assigning server resources to applications.

SERVERVIEW VIRTUAL I/O MANAGER (SV VIOM)Simplified management of I/O addresses

Page 16: Pi Pybx Family En

Uniform ManagementServer virtualization is a key enabler for building dynamic IT infrastruc-tures and many experts share the vision of a completely virtualized IT infrastructure. But despite the rapid growth rates of server virtua-lization products, the percentage of x86 server workloads running in virtual machines today is still low. This means that mixed operation of physical and virtual servers will be a long-term reality in most data centers. As a result, there will be a need for management tools that can handle the management of both physical and virtual environ-ments. RCVE addresses the management challenges in a heteroge-neous physical and virtual server environment by integrating the administration of physical and virtual servers as much as possible. Using a single console, RCVE provides visualization of server resource states and common basic operations on physical and virtual servers. For managing mixed hypervisor environments, RCVE has a uniform interface for common administrative tasks like start, stop, reboot or live migration operations for all supported hypervisor products. RCVE shows the virtual resources and their relationships to physical systems on a single console. In PRIMERGY blade server environments this inclu-des the monitoring of physical and virtual network connections. This enables server administrators with limited networking skills to easily confirm the network configuration.

ServerView Resource Coordinator (RCVE)

Simplified Lifecycle ManagementRCVE enables fully-automated server deployment for entire server farms through integrated cloning and remote system image distri-bution capabilities. Furthermore, RCVE makes it possible to create system image backups, which are centrally managed on the admin server. Leveraging the integrated fully-automated server deployment capabilities, RCVE also simplifies and speeds up hardware maintenance by easy and automated restoration of system images after hardware components have been replaced. Server downtime due to mainte-nance tasks can now be reduced to a minimum.

Cost-Effective High AvailabilityIf a server fails, ServerView Resource Coordinator VE automatically starts a spare system to prevent downtime. In this way, a large number of production servers in a pool can be protected by one or a few sub-stitute servers (N:1 failover). The spare servers can be jointly used in mixed, physical and virtual environments. Furthermore, the high avai-lability function complements and can be combined with, the existing high availability functions offered by the hypervisor vendors.

With ServerView® Resource Orchestrator (ROR), Fujitsu offers a next-generation system management software that enables IT organiza-tions to deliver IT infrastructure resources faster while at the same time lowering the barriers for users to gain access to IT resources. Automation of provisioning processes helps to streamline infrastruc-ture administration workflows with a positive impact on operational data center costs. A logical server concept hides the complexity of the underlying physical infrastructure. It also provides users with an inter-face from which they can request server resources easily and efficiently. ROR serves as a key building block for companies moving forward on their way to implementing more dynamic resource management in order to integrate and run their infrastructure in a cloud computing environment.

Resource OrchestrationThe foundation for effective resource orchestration is ROR’s ability to automatically provision a physical or virtual server from shared pools of infrastructure resources (physical and virtual servers, storage, network, OS images). For management of the individual resource pools, ROR not only provides interfaces to Fujitsu’s own management platforms, it also can integrate with management products from technology partners.ROR enables collective management of resources in “resource groups” allowing a clear separation of resources belonging to different users groups. This enables multi-tenant management in larger scale envi-ronments, where a huge amount of resources have to be managed. Moreover, user and role-based management capabilities allow IT organizations to enforce enterprise-specific security policies.

Resource AbstractionIn order to give IT user’s easier and more dynamic access to server re-sources, ROR introduces a logical server concept, which hides the com-plexity of the underlying IT infrastructure. A logical server is an abstract server definition, which describes all parameters required to setup a physical or virtual server, including storage and network settings. ROR manages the complete life-cycle of logical servers.
