Closed circuit helium (He) dilution test. A: Spirometer containing a known volume of gas (V1) and a known He concentration (C1) while the patient is breathing room air. B: Patient who was turned into the system at functional residual capacity (FRC). As the patient breathes on the system, the FRC, which contains no He, combines with the spirometer volume and dilutes the He in the system. Exhaled carbon dioxide is chemically removed from the system. The patient is given 100% oxygen (02) during the test to replenish the 02 the patient consumes, keeping the total volume of the system constant throughout the test. C: Completed test where the He has reached equilibrium throughout the system and the patient's lungs (C2). The spirometer volume and the patient's FRC (V2) can then be calculated:

The FRC can then be determined by subtracting the initial spirometer volume from the equilibrium volume (FRC = V2 – V1).

Relationship between surface tension and area of the surface film. During expiration, surfactant molecules on the surface move closer together, eventually causing some molecules to form micelles under the surface. During inspiration, surfactant molecules on the surface move further away, allowing surfactant molecules from the micelles.
