SCIENCE!!

If it moves,it’s biology.

If it stinks,it’s chemistry

If it doesn’t work,it’s physics

Page 6: Physics 20

Unit I: The Physics of Everyday Things

What is physics and why is it important

Unit II: Light

What do we know about: mechanics, heat, wave behavior, electricity and magnetism?

Characteristics of lightReflection & Refraction

Unit III: WavesProperties of Waves and Wave Phenomena

Unit IV: Sound

Applications, Transmission and Characteristics of Sound

Unit V: HeatHeat and Temperature, Specific Heat Capacity and Latent Heat, Thermodynamics

How you will be evaluated:

Daily Science Feedback:5-10 minutes to read science article/ or watch video and to respond. Weekly check: 5%Final Project: 10%

=15% of final gradeUnit Quizzes: 30% of final grade

Midterm Exam: November20% of final grade

Final Exam: January25% of final grade

Labs and Participation:10 % of final grade

Science can be challenging…but I KNOW WE CAN DO IT.

I have high expectations of you and I know you will do well if you do the following:

1) Have a positive attitude2) Try!3) Work as a team 4) Participate by asking questions and finding answers5) Want to have fun

How I like to teach and learn:

Through technologyExperiments/hands-onDiscussions/debatesInquiry: solving problemsGetting involved (action to better community)

BEFORE

We can start all the good Physics stuff-We need to go through Classroom Guidelines and Procedures

This may take a week or two to understand; the Physics stuff can wait!

Page 11: Physics 20

Classroom Guidelines:

Guidelines are important so that we all know what to expect at all times.

Guidelines create a consistent space and leave out any guessing games or uncertainty.

Page 12: Physics 20

Guideline #1: Be in your assigned seat and working on the assigned bell-work when the bell rings.

DAILY SCIENCE FEEDBACK 5-10 MINUTES

Page 13: Physics 20

Guideline #2: Bring all books and materials to class and take them with you when you leave. (except for the daily science journals)

Page 14: Physics 20

Guideline #3: Treat each person in this room with dignity and respect.

Page 15: Physics 20

Guideline #4: Follow all procedures and policies as outlined in your high school’s handbook. My rules in class are the same as other teachers and administrators of the school.

Page 16: Physics 20

Guideline #5: The classroom is a “No whining zone”. Everything that I do is in your best interest, so please respect the “No whining zone” this semester.

Page 17: Physics 20

Guideline #6: Infraction notices will be handed out to those who need to correct their behaviour and who need to return to their classroom task.

Please: Correct your behaviour and return to your task.

EXAMPLE

Page 18: Physics 20

Examples of how to earn Infraction Notices:

-sleeping-being disrespectful in anyway-fighting/swearing-damaging property

Page 19: Physics 20

Consequences for not following the guidelines:

1st : Verbal Warning 2nd: Infraction Notice 3rd: Action Plan Form and Parental Contact4th: Disciplinary Referral (Office)

Page 20: Physics 20

Miss Mitchell’s Action Plan

1. What’s the problem?2. What’s causing the problem? (list all of the factors)3. What plan will you use to solve the problem?

Sound Scary?.....Do not worry. These consequences are in place so if something is not working, then we can improve it!

You can give me your input on what works for you or does not work. I value privacy and not embarrassing others; therefore the infraction notice and action plan are tools for you and I to use to fix things.

Page 23: Physics 20

Classroom Procedures:

Different from guidelines. Classroom procedures lay out what I expect from you on a day to day basis. We will practice these until they come naturally!

Page 24: Physics 20

1). How to enter a room (there is not only one way!)

-enter quietly-have a seat-take our your materials-review the agenda

Page 25: Physics 20

2). When you are late: (this depends on school procedures)

-enter quietly-for an excused late: place excuse in basket on teacher’s desk-for an unexcused late: sign detention list-have a seat and take out work

Page 26: Physics 20

3). Getting your attention:I will…..

-stand in front of the class-raise my hand-wait for everyone to be quiet-after one minute of waiting, teacher will keep students in for however long it takes for them to settle down before break/lunch.

Page 27: Physics 20

4). Student Responsibility Card: forgetting homework

You’ve Been Pink Slipped!

Date:_________________Printed Name:__________Class Section:__________

Completing your homework or assignment is your responsibility as a student.

Missing assignment:________________________________________

I do not have my homework today because:_____ I did it, but forgot to bring it to class._____ I chose not to do it._____ I forgot._____ I did not have appropriate materials at home._____ Other- explain in detail. ________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

Page 28: Physics 20

5). Things to do if you finish your work early.

Golden List

-Work on unfinished science assignments-Read novel of choice-Work on Daily Science Feedback responses-Review vocabulary words-Start on nights’ homework

Page 29: Physics 20

6). Homework: after an excused absence

-Go to homework notebook-Copy homework-Retrieve any handouts-Sign the homework notebook.

Page 30: Physics 20

7). Procedure for turning in assignments:Pass all assignments to the left; teacher will collect assignments in stacks from the most left row.

Page 31: Physics 20

8). Classroom discussions:

-Please participate-If your question/comment is off the topic, please write it down and ask later-For bathroom breaks during discussions, raise your hand and show me three fingers and wait for me to acknowledge you. Sign your name on the sign out sheet when you leave the classroom, indicating the time you left and time when you returned.

Page 32: Physics 20

9). Moving around the classroom:

-must ask permission-do not ask during classroom discussion unless it is an emergency

Page 33: Physics 20

10). Class dismissal:

-the teacher dismisses you, not the bell-do not start packing up prior to the bell-wait until teacher finishes and officially dismisses you with “have a nice day”.

Page 34: Physics 20

Remember….-I truly believe in your potential-I want you to believe in it, too!-Have an awesome year!
