In contemporary Thailand, Buddhism is the state religion of the country, and according to the most recent census, approximately 94% of the 63 million Thais are Buddhist.

For Thais, being Buddhist is more a way of life than other religions. They don’t see the Buddha as a God but rather as a real person who reached enlightenment through meditation and leading a good life. When they pray, or pay respect to his image, they are promising him that they will do their best to be good.

The island of Phuket is by no means small when compared to other islands in Thailand and there are many attractions for

you to visit whilst you’re here. There are possibly some destinations you would also like to visit which are actually off the island. If you’re already here or are coming to Phuket as part of a large family or group, you may be wondering what the simplest and best way is of getting you all around, as a group, to visit these places. In Theravada Buddhist societies, every morning at around 6am, monks gather their alms bowls and drums are beaten to wake local people to notify them the monks are coming. The monks

then walk through their neighborhood collecting the food they will eat for the day.

“The act of giving alms to monks has been practiced by Buddhists for thousands of years. It’s associated with Buddhists belief that doing good things will bring peace and happiness to their lives.

There are many ways in which Buddhists can make merit and these include giving alms, living life according to Buddha’s teachings and praying.



Art & Culture

Alms giving is a common practice and is usually done at the break of dawn, when Buddhist monks begin their alms rounds. Locals will prepare food, or have water, and wait for the monks to approach them with their alms bowls.

It is important to note, women are prohibited from any physical contact with a monk -regardless of her age, nationality or religion. All female alms donors must take care not to touch a monk when she is offering food to him.

Once the food or water has been placed inside the bowl, the monk will place the lid back on his alms bowl and recite a prayer as a blessing to his donor, after which the merit-making will be considered as officially over.

Buddhists give alms for a number of reasons; one example is in honour of deceased loved ones, the belief is they will not have to suffer from famine in the afterlife.

The common rule when making merit is to ensure the mind is purified. Only after that state has been accomplished will the Buddhist proverb ‘do good and good will come unto you’ ring true.”

Meditation is a combination of mindfulness and concentration. Regular practice leads to wisdom. After years of practice, the monks share their understanding with the community, which is looking for guidelines on how to lead a happy and peaceful life.

Alms-Giving BeliefsThai Buddhists believe in rebirth, which means the spirit lives on after the body has died. After the spirit has left the human body, it’s instantly reborn into another living form – as a human being, animal or angel, for example.

Thai Buddhists often offer food to monks after a family member or friend has passed away because they believe their spirits receive the food. As a result, many people offer food their loved ones liked.

In addition, most Thai Buddhists make a wish before offering food to monks. Many Thais also wish for wealth, good health & happiness.

How to Benefit From Alms GivingIt’s important to have good intentions whenever you offer alms, and the money put towards alms giving should be earned in an honest way.

In order to benefit the most from alms giving, the donor should be joyful before, during and after the offering.

Always give alms of your own free will. It’s not important how much you offer, it’s your intentions that matter.

Only offer what you’re able to give and feel comfortable with. Certain people give in to social pressures and end up offering more than they really can afford - this won’t do you any good.

Sales of Dokudami have, until now, been gained in Thailand purely via multi- level marketing (mlm). However, as part of Prolac (Thailand) Co Ltd’s desire to market their product to a global market they have now extended their marketing platform to cover e-commerce, and have appointed Belgian born entrepreneur Daniel van den Enden as Director of e-commerce.

52 year Daniel studied industrialengineering up until the age of 22, when he then started his own venture in the music business, organizing concerts for the likes of Tina Turner and Fats Domino. After several successful business ventures, in 1992, when he was fi rst came to be based in Thailand, Daniel met Prolac

It was earlier this year that Daniel reconnected with Khun Aswin, found out about Dokudami,

and decided it was a venture he would l ike to be involved with. It was Daniels’s proposal to Khun Aswin to join together and start up the e-com-merce side of Prolac (Thailand) and bring Dokudami to a wider market.

Daniel believes with Phuket being one of the world’s best health and wellness

destinations, there was no better place to startup this side of the business than here, and his

fi rst task was to set up the company website, something which was never done in Prolac’s previous 10 years in operation.

Having established the website www.dokudamihealing.com,it is now Daniels task to start to get the required hits to the website. Daniel believes that one of the main ways of getting the hits, rather than just waiting and hoping people will come across the website, is to offer people an online referral program. For Daniel, his main challenges are fi rstly getting people to believe in the company, and secondly ensuring people are able to fi nd Dokudami via search engines, both of which he realizes will take a little time.

With regards to targets, within a year Daniel hopes they should be selling 1,000 bottles per month via the website, something which he is sure they can reach once consumers are aware of the many benefi ts of Dokudami.

Advances in medical technology have led to a longer living population, which additionally results in an increased number of elderly people. Elderly people are

faced with many health problems contributed from physical decline. Falls are recognized as the most common and major health problem among the elderly, and falls are the leading cause of major injuries such as fractures and head traumas. Falls are the cause of around 70% of accidental death in people aged 75 and older, and falls result with

psychological traumas such as a loss of self confidence and fears of more falls. Put all of these factors together leads to a functional decline in daily activities and a low quality of life for the elderly.

A number of studies have been performed to determine causes, risk factors, and intervention to prevent falls among the elderly. Exercises and other forms of physical activity; such as swimming, yoga, walking, jogging, aerobic and Tai Chi Chaun, are recommended to prevent falls.

Tai Chi Chaun or Tai Chi (TCC, TC) was originally developed in China and is a slow and graceful Chinese exercise that includes a form of

mindfulness meditation. TCC consists of series of individual movements linked together in a continuous manner that flow smoothly from one movement to another. TCC is now used worldwide for health benefits.

Now in western cultures, TCC has been modified in different forms. Long forms of TCC, which often use at least108 movements, is a lot more difficult for elderly people to learn than short forms which consist of 8–13 movements. Short forms of TCC are much easier to learn than the original form and are becoming better known and more popular in urban and city areas.

Thailand has developed its own form of TCC exercise, known amongst Thais as Dao De Xin Xi.

Dao De Xin Xi was created in Bangkok in 1998. Dao De Xin Xi is a modified short form of TCC which uses 9 selected movements believed to have health benefits for 9 physiological systems in the body such as the cardio-

vascular system, digestive system, respiratory system etc. Dao De Xin Xi is a lot easier to perform than the original TCC; it is also softer and gentler and flows more slowly in a repetitive left to right circular manner. Deep breathing and mental concentration are also required when participating in this exercise form. In addition, each of the movement of Dao De Xin Xi is performed simulta-neously with Thai versions of 9 easy-listening Chinese songs which feature a Dao Xin melody arranged in.

In 2011, the Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation Department, Phramongkutklao Hospital in Bangkok performed a 12 week study to evaluate the effects of 12-weeks of Dao De Xin Xi exercise on balance and the quality of life of some of Thai-land’s elderly. A number of healthy Thai elderly women over the age of 60, either patients or workers in the hospital were recruited to participate in 60-minute Dao De Xin Xi exercise classes, 3 times per week for 12 weeks.

Most participants had dyslipidemia and hypertension which could be improved or maintained by medications. However, no walking aid was required by any of the participants. 14.3% of the participants had suffered a fall in the 6 months prior to the study. 50% of the participants wore glasses and 35.7% of the participants performed other forms of exercise such as tennis, jogging, aerobics, and swimming.

At the start of the study and at the end of the 12 weeks, participants were tested for their static balance (Single-Leg Stance Timed Test with eyes open and close) and dynamic balance (Expanded Timed Up and Go Test). Their quality of life was also measured using the abbreviated Thai version of the World Health Organization Quality of Life questionnaire.

In January 2012 the results of the study were released and the findings were as follows:

• Static and dynamic balance improved significantly after a 12-week of Dao De Xin Xi exercises.

• An increase in the SLST-test with eyes closed after the exercise, with significant difference found only for the left leg SLST-test.

• Dao De Xin Xi exercise significantly improved dynamic balance.

Dining inside the popular JW Marriott Phuket Resort & Spa has gotten a little hotter with the addition of new executive chef 43 year old, Austrian born Dietmar

Spitzer. Dietmar arrived on the island three months ago and prior to this he served as executive chef of the 2011 Best Newly Opened Hotel, the Ritz Carlton Shanghai Pundong, where it was his role to open and manage the hotel’s kitchen operations and culinary enterprises. His previous roles have taken him across continents, into the kitchens of some world-class properties.

From a very early age Dietmar knew he wanted to become a chef. His father, although not a professional, was a great cook and Dietmar believes this is where he gained his great interest in cooking. At the age of 13, his father got him a placement in a Michelin starred restaurant in his hometown and this

was where his culinary journey begun.

Nobody could be more passionate about their job, or food, than Dietmar, and every day he continues to fulfi ll his dream and passion creating food.

Dietmar recently took some time out to speak to Phuketindex.com about his role as executive chef of JW Marriot Resort & Spa and to share some of his culinary secrets with us.

What changes will you make now you’re here?Well the changes have already started, and in the three months I’ve already been here we have completely changed the menus in all our outlets, and now we’re working on setting up some new chef promotions for the coming high season. I’ve already arranged for my old Japanese Chef from the Ritz Carlton to come over in January to do a 10 day promotion. We also have a very special local lady, a brilliant chef, who comes in and prepares food which is all made from ingredients picked from the rainforest 2 days before the dinner, and this is Thai food as it was 250 years ago. I’m really excited about this promotion as when I first arrived she came here and cooked dinner for us and for me, even being an executive chef, it was absolutely mind-blowing, and we were still talking about it one week after. We have already held the first dinner with her and we will now have one every month. It’s not a cheap dinner, but it is a unique dining experience which any big food lover really should come and try. Chef’s Tables will start in November. They will be held in one restaurant per week, and will feature a special menu which will be prepared for a limited number of 10 guests.

What are the main challenges you face when implementing a new menu or dish?Changes are difficult for anyone in any situation in life. However, in my opinion a lot of it has to do with training and how well you are prepared for the changes. As mentioned before, I have changed the menus in all our outlets and we had no issues when implementing them. I work well ahead of time, and everything that needs to be done is done ahead of time. One of the most important things for me is that not only the chefs, but also the serving staff have full knowledge of what they are selling. Therefore, I want them to try and see the foods beforehand so they can explain in their own way what the food is that we have on offer.

What do you have to take into account when developing a new menu or dish?The most important thing is the taste. However, menus change according to seasons, and also we have to adapt menus for our changes in customer type. In the summer we have mainly Asian guests so I have

to set menus which are focused on our Asian clientele, and when we have mostly Westerners I have to adapt the menu for them.

What is your food philosophy?Well my personal food philosophy is very simple. You buy good ingredients, you cook them as fresh as is possible, and you create something beautiful for the plate. I’m not a chef who is into fusion cooking, I believe in very good basic food, which uses the best ingredients possible.

If there was one dish you could, but have never been able to put on a menu what would it be?Well, that’s a good question but there is actually a very special dish in Austria which uses the lung of a cow and I absolutely love it. It’s slow cooked and served in a sauce made from vinegar and flour and with a dumpling. I know for sure if I put that on any menu people would not buy it because they don’t know what it is.

What does the future hold for Chef Diet-mar?At 13 I said I wanted to be a chef, and I have achieved that goal. I’m 44 next year and I still want to be a chef. I enjoy what I’m doing and I still love to see food being prepared in the kitchen. I’ve often been asked if I want to move into F & B management but as a chef I know what I’m doing and that I do it well, why would I want to change that. I’m living my DREAM --- and for me happiness is being a Chef!

The Tzu Chi Foundation was established in 1966 by Venerable Dharma Master Cheng Yen on the poor east coast of Taiwan. For over 46 years, the foundation has been contributing to building better

social and community services, medical care, education and humanism in Taiwan and around the world. From the first 30 members, housewives who saved two cents from their grocery money each day to help the poor, the foundation now has volunteers in 47 countries, with 372 offices worldwide.

Tzu Chi Volunteers in Phuket

After the tsunami in 2004, which caused a great deal of damage along the Andaman coast, many people were caused suffering and pain. Miss Onanong Chinwaraporn joined as a volunteer to help some of those who were suffering. At the time there were many charity organizations offering help to people. However, Miss Onanong decided to join Tzu Chi Foundation, and she soon came to realize this group does very good deeds, without wishing for anything in return.

Miss Onanong said “My husband - Mr Chamnian, my friend from Taiwan Miss Jinny Lionu and I have been volunteers of the Tzu Chi Foundation since 2005. We would like to open out the Tzu Chi Foundation in Phuket to help the society, doing good deeds is a privilege. It is not something available to everyone, and we believe if you’re given an opportunity, you have to take it. Tzu Chi volunteers not only offer their services voluntarily, they also pay their own expenses for all operations they undertake. The foundations funds come from several donors, who pledge monthly contributions, and from many fund raising activities.”

Volunteers of the Tzu Chi Foundation are also known as “blue angels” and carry out their missions anywhere in the world. The Tzu Chi Foundation is an international humanitarian organization and the largest nongovernmental organization in

the Chinese-speaking world. Their blue and white uniforms signify the blue sky and white clouds and are easily recognizable and the Foundation conducts its missions by an international network of volunteers.

The Tzu Chi logo consists of a lotus a flower and ship and it delivers some meaning to its volunteers. The Tzu Chi logo symbolizes they can make the world a better place by planting good seeds. Schools, and holds classes for the general public at the Tha Rua Temple, which is offered in both Thai and English.

Two of the main problems faced by juveniles in Thai society today are drug addiction and pregnancy, and Pra Sukun believes to eliminate these problems the most important Buddhist precepts that should be taught to students are precept 3 (no sexual misconduct) and precept 5 (do not consume alcohol).

As Phuket now has a large number of international visitors, Pra Sukun also wants those visitors to learn about the real religion of Phuket and therefore, eight years ago he started a ‘Forms of Religion Thai - English Course’, a four week course which is open to children of 7 years old up to adults, and teaches them classes in Buddhism. For two hours per week, people can be provided with an overview of Buddhism and learn about Buddhist prayers, meditation and the 4 Noble Truths. It is hoped that by the end of the four weeks all attendees can bring the teachings into their everyday lives.

Every Sunday from 9 a.m. - 12 p.m. Wat Tha Rua holds a food offering for the monks of the temple where you will also be able to see the monks partake in a sermon. Please dress appropriately.

In the past, for his teachings Pra Sukun has prepared and published a Dharma Book entitled “Mongkol 38”. The book is a carton style book in Thai & English and was distributed to students. However, the books have completely run out and due to a lack of funding it is not possible for Pra Sukun to print more. Buddhism is a large part of Thai people’s everyday life, and Buddhism is full of ceremonies which mark momentous occasions of their lives. Of all the Buddhist ceremonies, the Thai Buddhist wedding is

perhaps one of the most spiritual and beautiful of them all.

Traditional Thai Buddhist weddings are known to be one of the most romantic wedding ceremonies in the world, and these weddings are not only a true traditional wedding but also a social gathering.

Pre-weddingOften in traditional Thai marriages, a close friend of the groom will request the bride’s hand to her father. Then talks will begin about the dowry (Sin-sod), which will include how much money and what gifts will be given to the bride’s family.

Once the dowry has been agreed, it is then an important factor for the bride and groom to find the most auspicious date for them to wed, thus ensuring they have a happy and prosperous marriage.

The big dayUnlike western weddings, Thai weddings start early in the morning. This is the spiritual part of the wedding, which sees 3, 5, 7 or 9 monks arrive to visit the marrying couple. As they chant and pray, a lit candle is placed in a bowl of water, the water will later be used later to bless the couple. A bowl of white paste will also be blessed and later smeared on the foreheads of the couple.

The couple and relatives will then offer food to the monks who, after their meal, will chant again whilst the most senior monk will go around blessing the couple and gathering with holy water before returning to the temple.

In western culture it’s usual for an engagement to take place prior to the wedding. However, in Thai culture most couples hold their engagement ceremony on the morning of the wedding. This will see the groom and his family offer the dowry to the bride and her family, this is referred to as the khan maak procession. The groom, his family and a procession of guests will take the dowry (khan maak man) on special trays to the family of the bride. They will be accompanied by musicians playing traditional long drums as the procession dances its way to the bride’s house.

The main part of the wedding, usually conducted by a senior elder, either a member of the bride’s family or respected member of the community, will see the couple wear traditional Thai clothes and kneel in front of the senior elder. The couple ‘wai’ as a holy string is draped from one persons head to the other, forming a circle and connecting the couple (Sai Mongkol). It is symbolic that the thread forms two circles which whilst linked, also remain independent. This indicates that the couple’s destinies are linked, but individual identity is retained. The senior elder and guests will then pour holy water over the couple’s hands for good luck in the ‘rod nam sang’ ceremony.

The well organized wedding party will see a large number of guests, made up of family, friends and locals, come to enjoy a good meal. Many will leave immediately after eating, as more than often they have travelled for several hours to attend and have to return home the same day. The party will then have plenty of drinking and dancing and will continue well into the early hours of the morning. A Buddhist wedding ceremony is as serene and evocative an occasion as one could wish for, and provides the feeling that one’s union is welcomed, and entirely in place, in this exotic land.

challenges and opportunities in 2015, and Phuketindex.com have been lucky enough to speak to one of the leading players in Thailand’s property development industries, Mr. Songkran Issara, about Thailand’s property development industry come 2015. Khun Songkran is Managing Director of Charn Issara group, who have long been an initiator and a leader of many property developments for more than three decades, and have recently won the Best Developer Award at the 2012 Thailand Property Awards.

In 2015, Thailand and 9 other Southeast Asian Nations will become one foundation known as the Asian Economic Community (AEC). The regional integration’s objective is to create a competitive market of over 600 million people in Asean countries: Brunei, Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, and Vietnam. There will be free flow of goods, services, investment capital and skilled labor following the liberalization. These will include tariff reductions and streamlining of certain administrative procedures.

1. How do you think the property development business will change in Thailand once it joins the AEC in 2015?I think it will be a lot more positive for the property business here. Once the AEC starts, the market will be so much bigger, growing from only 50 million people to 600 million people. But this will not only benefi t Thai businesses, it will benefi t busi-nesses of each of the 10 member countries. However, some countries will benefi t more from some industries than others, whilst some will lose. For Thailand as a whole, the GDP is expected to grow by around 2%, the second best increase after Singapore. When we talk about this growth, you have to understand that in terms of GDP; even .10% of growth is a lot. So moving from 4% to 6% is a massive and signifi cant jump.

Thailand is a strong country when it comes to tourism, commu-nications & automobile industries, so these areas will benefi t even more from the AEC than other industries here such as property development.

2. Do you think it will be easy for Thai property devel-opers to expand into other countries within the AEC?It is my belief that this will not be easy, not just for Thai busi-nesses to go to other countries, but for all countries to move into another country. There is a lot of local knowledge required when it comes to laws, culture and marketing. I also believe there is a lot of cross border risks, for example politics and more importantly currency. You may start a project with the belief you will make money, but should the currency from the country in which you’re doing business change, which is very highly possible nowadays; you could end up losing a lot of money.

3. How do think Thai property developments compare to those in other countries within the AEC?In my opinion, we are the strongest country. The biggest property developers who remain in business in Thailand today have, along with the country, been through many tough economical challenges and survived. Many people would believe Singapore is the strongest, however, that’s because in Singapore there are a lot less big players in the property development industry. The market which they are in is an oli-gopoly, meaning their market is dominated by a small number of sellers. Because there are few sellers, each oligopolist is

likely to be aware of the actions of the others. The decisions of one fi rm infl uence, and are infl uenced by, the decisions of other fi rms. Their property development companies may have a lot of money, but this does not necessarily mean they are strong. In Thailand, there are so many more competitors in the industry so the competition is really strong. Here, it really is a case of only the strongest can survive, irrelevant of how much money they have.

4. What do property developers need to do to make sure they are ready for AEC 2015?First of all, they must understand what joining the AEC means, not only for Thailand but for their business. There are many here in Thailand that still doesn’t know what joining the AEC means and what the implications of joining are. They need to understand the benefi ts and downfalls they will face. In the other member countries they have been preparing themselves for a very long time, but here they are just starting to do it. It is also essential the companies fully update themselves on local laws; if they are up to scratch then I’m sure they have nothing to fear from the overseas competitors.

5. How prepared are you for 2015, and what do you still need to do to be prepared?As for us, we are very prepared. We started a project earlier this year in Cha Am which consists of 300 units spread over 20,000sqm. They have already sold out so we are ready to start a new phase in the next couple of months. We are also involved in a new hotel business in the area too.

We are also building a new project in Bangkok, along with a project in the Koh Yai area.

6. What do you think the future holds for Phuket come 2015?I believe we need to have a strong leader and also to be run as a special economic zone. If we do not become a special eco-nomic zone, we may not get the required amount of budget to keep up with our annual growth. Phuket makes so much money for Thailand and gets so little in return. Unfortunately, the gov-ernment only takes into account the number of registered people living on the island when it comes to budget, they don’t take into account the large number of people who pass through here as unregistered, and this really needs to change.



migration, as I believe your readers will already be fully aware of these. The roads around the majority of the island are in a terrible state of repair, or have been patched up so many times they are like driving on a dirt track. In additional to this, what happened to the Conference Center that was talked about so much not so long ago? Many people think we have enough marinas already, but I am of a different opinion, these people with boats are big spenders and bring so much money to the island, why can’t we accommodate for more of them? Unfortunately, there have been so many things talked about, such as the monorail and conference center, which are all great ideas but nothing ever materialises.

Finally, and this goes back to property, it’s time that land leasing laws were updated. We cannot continue with the 30 year leasing rules and this applies to foreigners and Thais. In my opinion, if the law was changed to make the leases 50 or 70 years everybody would be a lot better off.

Now I’ve got that off of my chest, at the end of the day, not only businesses here in Thailand, but also the Thai Govern-ment needs to go outside of Thailand and actually see what competition they have when it comes to the AEC. Nobody can tell a business how to prepare for the AEC, the business has to see for themselves, and it is down to them to learn about what they are likely to face in 2015. If you don’t go outside of Thailand, how can you compare your business to a business the same as yours which is in Burma or Bali.

I have just returned from Burma and what I have found from there I now have to apply to my business here.

Businesses are doing all they can to bring them up to scratch with the AEC, but they are doing it off their own backs with little assistance from the government. There are certain issues which businesses cannot tackle, only the government can. Not until the government get’s more involved can these issues change. I am happy to outline for you what I feel needs to change to bring us in line with other member countries.

Security needs to be brought to an international level, not only for local people, but also for the millions of tourists who pass through here each and every year. This includes increasing police numbers, improving CCTV coverage etc.

I also feel a lot needs to be improved with regards to the clean-ness of the island. It’s not nice to drive around the island and see piles of rubbish dumped at the roadside. Imagine what a sight that is for the tourists that come here, and it’s something which can be improved so simply. In addition to this, it will also help the environment in which we all live, something which a number of people are trying to work on, but without government input it will improve very slowly.

We are a world class tourist destination, which boasts of hav-ing world class facilities and an International airport. You don’t have to travel that far away from Thailand to realise that much of Phuket’s infrastructure is in no way world class. The interna-tional airport, which at least they are starting to work on, may be named as Phuket International Airport, but it is no way up to international standards. The terminals are terrible, there are not enough runways, and the one there is, is barely long enough, and I don’t want to mention too much about the queues at im-
