PHS Parent Page Prospect High School – A California Distinguished School November 2015 Happy November Prospect Parents: As we move forward and closer to Thanksgiving, I wanted to take the time to thank all who participate and come to our wonderful events including Homecoming, and most recently, our school play. As a part of Prospect's Mission statement, "We recognize that we are a part of a greater community and a strong active partnership strengthens all," we at Prospect continue to build upon this vision and mission, adding more opportunities for our community to participate and become part of our larger mission. During the month of October, as part of Breast Cancer Awareness, our ASB class continued to sell our Prospect Pink Panther shirts in support of awareness and fundraising to help cure cancer. On October 31, our Pink Panthers will wear our pink shirts in the Silicon Valley Making Strides walk at Guadalupe Park. We hope to see a sea of pink in our effort to contribute to this worthy cause. Additionally, we have many more opportunities for everyone to get involved. Please come join our parents at our PTSA meeting November 10 at 7:00 p.m. in the staff lounge. We will be discussing the success of our November 7 Open House to prospective incoming 9th graders and also ideas for our next parent/teen information night. I hope you have a most wonderful November. Sincerely, Joell Hanson LETTER FROM PRINCIPAL JOELL HANSON 18900 Prospect Rd. PHS PARENT PAGE 3 GUIDANCE NEWS Seniors: University of California (UC) and California State University (CSU) campuses are now accepting applications for Fall 2016. Applications for the UC campuses will be accepted November 1- November 30, 2015. Applications for the CSU campuses will be accepted October 1 - November 30, 2015. For applications, go to the following websites: www.universityofcalifornia.edu/apply (UC) or www.csumentor.edu (CSU).
Seniors, do not wait until Thanksgiving vacation to start working on your college applications. Students are encouraged to apply early! Top Five Reminders for First-Time Freshman Applicants: 1. Send official ACT, SAT and TOEFL scores to just one UC campus and UC will share them with all campuses to which you applied. CSU School Code = 3594. College Board will share official scores with all 23 campuses. 2. December Examination dates are acceptable even though the application is due by November 30th. Indicate your December 2015 planned test date on the admission application; be sure to request that the official scores be sent to all 4-year university campus(es). Check with specific UC/CSU campuses regarding last test date accepted. 3. Do not send transcripts/academic records; UC/CSU will request them if they are needed during the review process.
4. Do not send letters of recommendation; UC/CSU does not require them or read them unless requested. 5. After submitting your application, check your
email/portal daily for any communication from
campuses regarding deadlines, required/missing documentation (transcript, test scores, etc..) or any other important information. Private/Out-of-State universities: Seniors make sure that you check with the specific campus to confirm application and other required documentation deadlines; these may differ from UC/CSU deadlines. Students check if the specific campus(es) is on the Common Application Directory and accepts the common application by going to www.commonapp.org and create an account.
Seniors: There is still time to register for college entrance exams. Some colleges and universities will still accept SAT and/or ACT results from no later than the December 2015 test date. Make sure you check with the specific campus to confirm that they will accept the December test date results. The next SAT test dates are November 7th and December 5th (sat.org/register). The next ACT is December 12th (www.act.org). Prospect High School is a SAT test center. The PHS test center code number is 05710. The PHS school code number is 053344. Part of the registration process is to request scores to be sent by College Board or ACT to your specific colleges. Colleges want official scores from College Board or ACT. Community College: Seniors planning to apply to community college will begin the process in the Spring 2016.
Complete the online registration for your chosen Community College and get your ID number
Students now have to: o Take placement test assessments o Complete an orientation o Develop an educational plan
Many of the Spring orientations will take you through all 3 steps on the same day if you register early.
Financial Aid
Senior Class Visits: The Guidance Advisors will visit Senior Government classes in December and in February to discuss financial aid applications and the Cal Grant Program. Students applying for Federal Student Aid and the Cal Grant Program are required to complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) online at www.fafsa.ed.gov starting January 1, 2016. Financial Aid submission deadline is March 2, 2016. Scholarship Opportunities: Naviance Family Connection can be used as a scholarship search tool. To access the lists of scholarships, students log in to Naviance Family Connection and click on the Colleges tab. In the Scholarships & Money section click on Scholarship list. This section contains a list of loca/national scholarships. This section also includes a Scholarship Match feature. Upon completing the required questionnaire, Naviance Family Connection “matches” your student with scholarships that he/she is eligible to apply for.

Subject Tests are the only national admission tests you can take to show your strengths in the science, history and/or world languages.
If your Junior is planning to take the ACT test or the New SAT (starting March 2016) for UC admissions, they must register for the ACT or New SAT Plus Writing.
Juniors should be focusing on doing well in their classes. Colleges look very closely at Junior year results. Use Naviance Family Connection to keep track of all college searches. Visit college admissions websites to familiarize yourself with the admission process and language of each campus. It is never too early to start preparing yourself for your post-secondary goals.
Class of 2018 & Class of 2019
Focus on doing well in your classes. Colleges look at the work that is completed in 9th and 10th grades. Graduation also depends on how you do throughout your four years at Prospect High School. Your classes at Prospect High School are preparing you for college entrance tests (SAT and ACT).
Use Study Hall (Monday – Friday 11:40am to 12:10pm) and Homework Center (Tuesdays, Wednesdays & Thursdays in the Library 2:45pm to 3:45pm) for help with classes. Get help early and pass your classes the first time!
Find out where to get help with graduating from high school and planning your future: Guidance office, Naviance Family Connection and College and Career Center.
Research possible interesting jobs, volunteer opportunities, and internships for the summer before your junior year.
Start really thinking about career choices, college choices and college majors (Naviance Family Connecton).
Ask others where they went to school and which schools they know about.
