Phrase A group of words that is either
missing the subject, its matching verb, or both
Examples The ancient oak tree Hitting the window On a jet plane
Clause A group of words that has both a
subject and an verb (similar to sentences)
Independent clauses- can stand on their own (aka sentence) Stan went to the movies.
Dependent clauses- cannot stand on their own After Stan went to the movies
