TERMINAL | PHOTO WETTBEWERB

Die drei Berliner Flughäfen befinden sich in vollkommen un-terschiedlichen Zuständen: Es gibt den geschlossen und um-genutzten Tempelhofer, den intakten Tegeler und den sich immer noch im Bau befindenden Flughafen Berlin-Branden-burg. In keiner anderen Stadt lässt sich die die Geschichte und Zukunft der Luftfahrt so exemplarisch ablesen. Wir wollen nun euch die Möglichkeit geben, euren künstlerischen Stand-punkt deutlich zu machen. Die besten Arbeiten werden von einer internationalen Jury ausgezeichnet und in einer thematischen Ausstellung im Projektraum | PhotoWerkBerlin zum Europäischen Monat der Fotografie im Oktober 2014 präsentiert.

The three airports of Berlin, while beeing similar they are com-pletely different. Tegel is intact and supposedly fully operatio-nal, Templehof‘s operations indefinitely suspended and Berlin-Brandenburg is in some sort of construction limbo. No other city shares it‘s airport history in the manner that Berlin does. We want to give you the opportunity to share your artistic vision in the photographic medium regarding this polarizing subject. The best images will be judged and selected by an international jury and then presented in a thematic group exhibition at the Project Space / PhotoWerkBerlin within the European month of Photo-graphy in October 2014.

SUSAN PAUFLER HEIMAT SIEMENSSTADT Die ab 1900 erbaute Siemensstadt beheimatet mehr als11.000 Menschen. Berühmte Architekten wie Walter Gropi-us, Hans Scharoun und Hugo Häring schufen eine architek-tonische Vielfalt die der Neuen Sachlichkeit verpflichtet war und die heute zum Weltkulturerbe zählt.Im Workshop wollen wir das Leben in der ehemals moderns-ten Siedlung Europas erkunden. Nach einer Einführung in die Dokumentarphotographie werden wir den 70 Meter hohen Siemensturm besteigen. Von dort verschaffen wir uns einen Überblick über die Wohnsiedlung, die Werksbauten und das Erholungsgebiet. Im praktischen Teil widmen wir uns anhand unterschiedlicher photographischer Schwerpunkte dem Le-ben und Wohnen in der Siemensstadt. Zum Abschluss wer-den wir die entstandenen Arbeiten gemeinsam besprechen.

The Siemenstadt, the home for 11,000 workers and their fa-milies, was built since 1900. It was designed in this style of the New Objectivity by famous architects like Walter Gropius, Hans Sharoun and Hugo Häring.In the workshop we will explore this formerly ultramodern hou-sing sheme. After a theoretical part about documentary photo-graphy we will access the heart of the industrial areal and then photograph life and living in the today‘s Siemensstadt. At the end we will discuss and evaluate the results.

JOCHEN ROHNER LIQUID PHOTOGRAPHY

Du kennst Photos auf Papier. Kennst du auch photographi-sche Bilder auf Holz, Stoff oder auf Wänden? In diesem Work-shop erlernen wir, unsere einzigartigen Photographien auf den ungewöhnlichsten Materialien sichtbar zu machen. Die Lösung ist: flüssige Photoemulsion. Wir können diese licht-empfindliche Schicht auf nahezu jede Oberfläche aufbringen. Auch die Herstellung eigener, neuer Photopapiere ist damit möglich.Im Workshop werden uns zunächst die theoretischen Grund-lagen und der Umgang mit flüssiger Photoemulsion vermit-telt. Anschließend fertigen wir unsere eigenen Arbeiten in der Dunkelkammer. Am Ende des Kurses können wir unser individuelles Ergebnis mit nach Hause nehmen.

You surely know photos on paper. Have you ever seen photos on wood, textile or on walls? With this workshop we will learn to realize our photographic pictures on the most unusual sur-faces. The solution is: liquid photo emulsion. We can apply the-se photosensitive materials on almost every material. It is also a great way to create new and unique photopapers.During the class we will first learn all about the basics of the liquid photographic emulsions. Then we will work on our own pieces in the darkroom and finally can take home our individual results.

DAVID PUNTEL WETPLATE WEEKEND

Das Wetplate Weekend führt uns ein in die wundervolle Welt der Glasplattenphotographie, die auch als Ambrotypie be-kannt ist. David Puntel zeigt uns die Technik in Berlins ein-zigem Skylight Studio, umgeben von einem Garten. Die Ar-beit mit natürlichem Licht erzeugt nicht nur angenehmere Bildtöne, sondern wir meistern auch konkret die Herausfor-derungen der Belichtungskontrolle. Wir lernen alle Schritte der Nassplatten-Technik kennen, arbeiten mit verschiedenen Kameras und historischen Objektiven mit denen wir unseren Impressionen auf den einzigartigen Ambrotypien verewigen.

The Wetplate Weekend is a journey into the amazing world of creating photographic images on glass, historically known as ambrotypes. This Collodion Workshop is held in Berlin‘s only skylight studio surrounded by a lovely garden. Shooting with natural daylight creates a more pleasing image (in contrast to harsh artificial light), but also under such lighting, we will learn the challenging issue of exposure control. The workshop includes instruction in all steps of the process, from the che-mistry involved and glass preparation to troubleshooting and elaborating your own unique images. We will work with diffe-rent cameras and antique brass lenses creating our own am-brotypes that preserve this wonderfull weekend out of place and time.

NORBERT WIESNETH LOST IN INTERIORS

Die Verhörzimmer des Stasi-Gefängnisses in Berlin-Hohen-schönhausen sind die Realität gewordene Phantasie Franz Kafkas: deutsche Gemütlichkeit, Gründlichkeit und Abgrün-digkeit.Wir werden den Ort erst historisch erforschen und lernen, warum die scheinbar heimeligen Büroeinrichtungen Teil der psychologischen Folter an politischen Häftlingen waren. Eine Woche später werden wir mit einer Sondergenehmigung in den originalen Räumen photographieren können. Neben der Technik der Lichtmalerei werden auch Blitztechniken gezeigt. Eine ausführliche Auswertung erfolgt am nächsten Tag.

The interrogation rooms of the Stasi Central Remand Prison in Berlin-Hohenschönhausen are the once-current reality of the imaginations of Franz Kafka: German Gemütlichkeit, rigour and fathomlessness.We will be given the opportunity to become familiar with the history of this site and will learn how the comfortable interior spaces became weapons of torture for the political prisoners held there. A week later we will have a special permit to pho-tograph within these rooms in an unlimited manner. Along with light painting approaches we will be taught special flash techniques. A comprehensive evaluation of the results will take place on the third day.

BEHLING & ZAPATKA DER NATÜRLICHE BLICK

Ein Portrait ist mehr als die Abbildung eines Gesichts. Dem Künstlerduo Fabian Zapatka und Katharina Behling gelingt es, in ihren Portraits die Umgebung, die spezielle Situation und besonders die Atmosphäre mit einzubeziehen. Damit sind sie gefragte Photographen für Magazine wie Rolling-Stone, Die Zeit, SZ-Magazin, Spex, Nido oder brandeins. In diesem Workshop gewähren sie Einblicke in den Entste-hungsprozess ihrer natürlich inszenierten Portraitaufnah-men. Anhand publizierter und privater Photostrecken weisen sie uns in ihre Methodik ein und erklären die Bildentstehung.Dieses Wissen setzen wir anschließend unter ihrer Anleitung um. Gemeinsam werden wir die so entstandenen Photogra-phien am letzten Tag des Workshops auswerten.

Katharina Behling and Fabian Zapatka form an artistic duo and couple. They work as independent as well as commissional pho-tographers. Together they have birthed a photo diary capturing their everyday life in images. With their individual approach, they have created a body of independent works as well as com-mercial projects. During the 3 day workshop, they will explain and demonstrate their creative process. Join the class with a curated lecture, technical demonstrations, theory and in-class practice, and recieve on the last day a critique of your assigned work.

Dieser Workshop stellt die Beziehung des Photographen mit der Spezifik des Ortes anhand der Berliner Flughäfen in den Mittelpunkt. Wir werden den intakten Tegeler, den stillgeleg-ten Tempelhofer und den noch nicht eröffneten Flughafen Berlin-Brandenburg parallel begehen und photographieren.Beispielsweise werden wir jeweils zur gleichen Tageszeit ver-gleichbare Situationen, wie zum Beispiel die Landebahn der jeweiligen Flughäfen wahrnehmen.Im Theorieteil setzten wir uns mit der Geschichte der drei Flughäfen und mit photographischen Positionen auseinan-der, die sich intensiv mit Orten beschäftigen. Eine umfassen-de Auswertung Ergebnisse folgt am letzen Tag.

This photographic workshop brings into focus the specifics of the three Berlin airports. We are exploring and photographing in parallel the still working airport Berlin-Tegel, the converted airport Tempelhof and the not yet opened airport Berlin-Bran-denburg. For instance we will observe at the same hour similar situations, like the runway of each of the airports respectively. During the lecture we will learn about the history of the air-ports and about photographic strategies that are dealing with locations. A comprehensive evaluation of the results will take place on the last day of the workshop.
