What is Photosynthesis?

• Process of converting sunlight with Carbon Dioxide and Water to create Glucose (SUGAR) and Oxygen

Balanced Equation

6 Carbon Dioxide molecules + 6 Water molecules yields 1 Glucose molecule and 7 Oxygen molecules

Page 5: Photosynthesis. What is Photosynthesis? Process of converting sunlight with Carbon Dioxide and Water to create Glucose (SUGAR) and Oxygen.

•Oxygen is released• The H is added to NADP to make

NADPH.• The ATP and NADPH move on to the

next step – the Calvin Cycle

Light reactions of photosynthesis

Page 6: Photosynthesis. What is Photosynthesis? Process of converting sunlight with Carbon Dioxide and Water to create Glucose (SUGAR) and Oxygen.

• Light independent – does not require light• The ATP and NADPH from light

reactions have energy that is used to convert CO2 into sugar•Once the ATP and NADPH have given

up their energy they are recycled back as ADP and NADP.

If Oxygen is released from P.S. what happens next?

• CELLULAR RESPIRATION!

Anaerobic Respiration

• When oxygen is present, glycolysis leads to other pathways which release a great deal of energy.

• If oxygen is not present, glycolysis is followed by a different pathway called fermentation.

Alcoholic Fermentation• Yeasts form ethyl alcohol and CO2 as waste

products.• Unleavened bread = pita• Leavened bread = sandwich bread

• Pyruvic acid + NADH alcohol + CO2 + NAD+

Lactic Acid Fermentation• Lactic acid is produced instead of alcohol.• Lactic acid is produced in your muscles during

rapid exercise when the body cannot supply enough oxygen to the tissues.

• Muscles will produce ATP from lactic acid fermentation causing a painful, burning sensation in your muscles.

• Cheese, yogurt, buttermilk and sour cream are formed from prokaryotes and lactic acid fermentation.

Aerobic Respiration (With OXYGEN)

• Mitochondrion(plural = mitochondria)

• Generate cellular energy (ATP)• Both plants & animal cells have

mitochondria• Site of CELLULAR

RESPIRATION
