red, green and blue. Instead we only want one so selectMonochrome.
Youll notice how the 3 values change to just one: gray.

onversion Techniques
Tutorial #1
1. Open up your image which is to be converted to sepia.Remember to double-click the Background to change it to aneditable layer.
2. Now were going to remove the colour from the photo using aprocess called Desaturation. Go to Image AdjustmentsDesaturate.
If youre interested in some
quicker ways to convert to
monochrome or split-tone,
heres a list of some good
filters that you can install in
Photoshop,
Autochromatic 2.04

Autochromatic is a

duotone, sepia and colour tint
effects. It can add a rust or
lavender tone, create

3. Now your photo should look grayscale like the one below.

4. Here comes the fun part where well get to experiment withdifferent sepia effects. Go to Image AdjustmentsVariations.
5. You should be greeted with a large dialogue box. Youll noticethat there are many options available at your disposal when itcomes to colouring your grayscale image. I only changed theMidtones, where I added More Yellow and More Red to theimage. I also nudged the Fine/Coarse slider one unit to theleft.

6. Hit OK and youll now have a fine looking, sepia-tonedphotography! Heres my final result.

Tutorial #2
1. Open up your desired image which is to be converted to sepia.
7/30/2019 Photoshop Guide to Monochrome and Splittone Effects
20/44
2. Now were going to convert the photo to grayscale, but thistime using another method in order for our effect to work outproperly. Go to Image Mode Grayscale.
3. As you can see, Grayscale basically achieves the same resultas Desaturation, but Grayscale converts everything (layers, colours etc.) to grayscale mode, while Desaturation onlyaffects the layer(s) that youve selected.
4. Now were going to change modes once again, fromGrayscale to Duotone, using Image Mode Duotone.
7/30/2019 Photoshop Guide to Monochrome and Splittone Effects
21/44
5. A dialog box should appear with Monotone set as the type.Well change this by selecting the arrow on the drop-down boxand choosing Duotone from the list.
6. Another colour will appear which is set to white as the default.
7. But for now letsedit the Black value first. Click on the black-coloured box once and youll now be able to pick a new colour.
I used a hex (#) value of d78a10. If youre confident, feel freeto choose your own. Hit OK when youve chosen your colour.
7/30/2019 Photoshop Guide to Monochrome and Splittone Effects
22/44
8. Next to the colour settings is a box which contains a straight,
diagonal line. This particular tool allows us to change theintensity of the colours at their various points, including theirshadows, highlights and midtones.
Click on the box once and a dialog box will appear. At anypoint along the line, you can click and drag it out to make itcurve in an unusual fashion. Heres what mine looks like aftera bit of experimentation. If you want to apply the samesettings, use the gridlines as reference points to distort the
straight line.
9. The process can now be repeated for our second colour. Forthe second colour, I used a hex value of 0d0b03.
7/30/2019 Photoshop Guide to Monochrome and Splittone Effects
23/44
10. While this second curve appears similar to the first one, Ive
made it a far more jagged and distorted.
11. Almost finished! All we need to do is label the colours. As youcan see, I named them orange and dark brown respectively.

1. Open up your image which needs to be converted to duotone.
2. Now add a new Color Balance layer, either by Layer NewAdjustment Layer Color Balance or using the shortcutillustrated below.
Few know that duotones
were actually incorporated
into newspapers and comic
strips. While halftones were
used more frequently, the
existence of duotones
came about from
cyanotype and halftone
prints.
Thanks, in part to
Photoshop, duotone is also
a generic term for images
using a color-separationprinting scheme
Duotonecolor mode in
Photoshop supports
between one and four
colors of ink. Because
home inkjet printers are far
better at printing full-color
images than black & white,
many photographers use
PhotoshopsDuotone
processing to improve their
greyscale prints.
Photoshop's Duotonemode
is also commonly used for
creating sepia toned prints,
using black and yellow
inks, sometimes with a third
color. This is what we
achieved in the last tutorial
for sepia effects.

4. Make sure that you select Duotone from the drop-down list.
5. Here are the colour settings that I used, working down from tobottom.
The first colour uses a hex value of 0f3c87.

And the second hex colour value is 1fadd1.
6. Here are my curved lines which Ive edited, going from top to
bottom.
The first curve is shaped rather wild, stretching up and down.

This last curve is far more sedate and only dips near thebottom-left of the grid.
7. When youre happy with your changes, all you have to do isname your colours. As you can see, Ive named the twocolours navy and light blue respectively.
8. When youre happy with your results, hit OK and everything is

onversion Techniques
Tutorial #1
1. Open up your image which is to be converted to tritone.
2. Now lets convert the photo to grayscale, by Image Mode Grayscale.
Before we finish, Ill leave you will
three helpful steps to taking
better photos when considering
converting them to monochrome
or split-tone
1. Shoot in Colour
While most digital cameras
offer you the option to shoot
in black & white (and can
produce some reasonable
results) you have more
control over your end results
later in Photoshop
2. Low ISO
Shoot with the lowest
possible ISO possible, as
unwanted noise in
monochrome/split-tone
becomes even more obvious
3. Composition
Since youre unable to use
colour to lead the eye into or
around your shot, you need
to train yourself to look at
shapes, tones and textures in
your frame as points of
interest. Pay particularly
attention to shadows and
highlights which will become
a feature of your shot.

3. Now doesnt that look good? Of course, were going to make itlook even better, so lets move on.
4. Well now change to duotone, using Image ModeDuotone.
7/30/2019 Photoshop Guide to Monochrome and Splittone Effects
37/44
5. Make sure that you select Tritone instead of Duotone.
6. Here are the colour settings that I used, working down from tobottom.
The first colour uses a hex value of 282723.
7/30/2019 Photoshop Guide to Monochrome and Splittone Effects

The second uses a hex value of ffe300.
And finally, the last one uses ff5c00.
7/30/2019 Photoshop Guide to Monochrome and Splittone Effects
39/44
7. Here are my curved lines which Ive edited, going from top tobottom.
As you can see, this curve is quite mellow to begin with andsoon becomes very steep.
This curve builds to a climax and then drops down slightly.
7/30/2019 Photoshop Guide to Monochrome and Splittone Effects
40/44
The last curve is more of a wavy line and bends quite a lot.
8. If you were following every direction, you should now havesomething which looks like this. Remember to name yourcolours before hitting OK.
