Saddened by the disastrous effects of Typhoon Haiyan in the Philippines, Jana asked its
members to share what was going on in their region and to submit personal photos and videos
of the aftermath of the storm.
Each submission was rewarded with Jana Instant Airtime, in hope that the mobile airtime might
help our panelists reach out to family members and loved ones and potentially help relief efforts
in the country.
The following slides contain personal photos and testimonials from real Jana panelists in the
Philippines.2

“In our province we are the most affected by Typhoon Yolanda because it has storm signal no. 4, the highest warning. Almost all my neighbors are affected. The flood is almost on the
roof and cars are floating because of the flood. My family and friends need help. We are now on the evacuation center because our house is already destroyed by the typhoon. Almost all
of my things are not recovered except my phone and some food. The government is helping us but it is not enough. We need communication, but
the problem is some networks are down and also there is no more
money to buy airtime. I want to also help my neighbor and all the
evacuees in this place, even in small things. Here in the evacuation center there are many people, almost 3,000
families.”

“This is what happened in our community. The flood occurred after the heavy rain and we use a boat to go to a place that will be safe.”

“In our province we are also affected, even though there is no storm signal. Some of the farmers are affected as well, like my father, whose land fields are very affected. All plants were destroyed. I think this season we can’t
harvest any more palay (rice).”- Emmanuel Mapoy

“Typhoons will always be a natural phenomenon that occurs here in the Philippines, and what typhoons bring us is fear. Fear of losing homes, fear of losing loved ones, family, or friends. Last night, sleep is so far to reach. I can hear the banging of roofs whenever the strong wind hits down. I can literally hear the sound of whirling above. I can’t sleep because I am afraid that once
heavy rain comes down, the flood will enter our house unnoticed while we sleep.”
