Origin of the lines

• These lines are the result of atoms jumping from one state to another

• Different atoms have different spectral signatures

• Observation of a line can tell us exactly what atom is responsible.

• Dark lines are the result of atoms absorbing light, and bright lines are due to atoms emitting light.
