LETTER FROM THE PREZ

The year is rapidly coming to a close and the month of November was chock full of highly anticipated KBS events. It started with our annual blues contest held November 5 at Stevie Ray's. Our thanks to everyone involved for making this a big success. Please join us in congratulating this year’s winner, the Stella Vees. We wish them luck in Memphis at the International Blues Challenge and know they will represent us well. Check out the photos from the contest in this month’s newsletter. Just before the contest we held our gen-eral membership meeting and re-elected the board and officers. I will stay on as president, Debbie Wilson as vice-president and Brenda Major as treasurer. Our newest board member and officer is Chris Grube. Chris will take over as secretary starting immedi-ately. Welcome Chris! We know you will do a fine job.

Joe Bonamassa visited the Brown School on Tuesday, November 14 as part of the Blues Foundation’s Blues in the School program. Bonamassa talked music and played the blues for an audience of 75 high schoolers for about an hour. He gave them a brief history of the blues but talked mostly about his own personal experiences which included discovering the blues at eight years old, forming his own band at eleven and playing with B.B King when he was twelve. Our thanks to Joe Whitmer and the Blues Foundation for bring Bonamassa to Louisville. We presented our annual Sylvester Weaver award to Gene Wickliffe, Rob Pickett and Mike Lynch of da Mudcats on Thursday, No-vember 16 at Stevie Ray's. This was our first time to present the award as a group presentation. Previously the award had been pre-sented to a deserving individual but when the vote was taken for this year’s award we had a three-way tie. It was just our good luck, and theirs, that the three individuals who tied were members of the same band. Congratulations guys! You richly deserve it.

I want to take a moment and acknowledge the contributions of Martha McNeal who is stepping down this year as secretary for the KBS. Martha was a rock solid presence at our monthly meetings and has been a member of the blues society for about as long as it has existed. She will be retiring to the sunshine state next year and her presence will be greatly missed. Thank you Martha and don't forget to visit us every once in a while.

My thanks to the board for confirming me as president for another year. It's hard to believe my first year as president is already com-ing to a close. It went by very fast. It's been a lot of hard work but a lot of fun too. I feel truly blessed to be in a community that sup-ports the blues as strongly as Louisville does and I think that will only continue to grow. We have a lot to look forward in 2007. I hope everyone comes along for the ride.

da Mudcats are da Winners!

The Kentuckiana Blues Society has given the Sylvester Weaver Award to a deserving recipient for 18 years. Many of our early winners are no longer with us, including Henry Woodruff, Jim Rosen, Foree Wells, Winston Hardy, Fred Murphy and Mary Ann Fisher. They were the foundation of our blues community from the 50s to the 90s. It is grati-fying that these people received our recognition while they were alive and well. This year the voting was very close, so close that the three members of da Mudcats were in a three way tie. The option of giving the award to the band was a win, win, win situation. Ex-Mudcatters, Jim Rosen and Susan O’Neil, have already been honored. The present musicians, Gene Wick-liffe, Rob Pickett and Mike Lynch have been playing together for 6 years. Gene has been drumming from nearly the be-ginning in 1985. Rob joined in 1988 and Mike is the baby in the band. They have crafted their own sound with vocals shared between Rob’s smooth ballads and Mike’s deep, gritty blues. The band had a dream gig four years ago when they were selected to play at the Monterey Blues Festival in California before thousands of fans. They made such a good impression that they were asked to return the following year. Mike didn’t take his Monterey T-shirt off for two months. Each musician has paid his musical dues. Mike has hosted the Tuesday blues jams at Stevie Ray’s for several years and currently is in the house band for the Wednesday jams at Longshot Tavern. Jim Rosen always referred to Rob as his “Nubian Brother” on the bandstand. There was a close bond. With the departure of Sue and Jim, Rob has developed his vocal skills that contrast nicely with Mike’s style. Gene is as steady as you can get keeping the beat for da Mudcats for over 20 years as well as backing Tanita Gaines. The award was presented to da Mudcats on November 16 at Stevie Ray’s after their first set. The plan was to surprise the winners while letting their friends and family in on the secret so they could be there. The plan worked, thanks to some behind the scenes calls by Sue. Since there were several past “Weaver Winners” in attendance, we all got on stage for some photo opportunities. Congratulations to da Mudcats!

Our Sunday, November 5 the Kentuckiana Blues Society held its annual blues contest at Stevie Ray’s Blues Bar. A full house was in attendance to see seven bands compete for a chance to participate in the Blues Foundation’s International Blues Challenge in Mem-phis, TN on February 1-3, 2007. The judges for the evening were Barry Blalock, owner of River Bend Winery and organizer of the 10th Street Blues Festival, Dale Cashon, creator of the Jeffersontown-Crusade Blues Festival and Kevin Yazell, host of the Saturday Night Blues Party on WFPK 91.9 radio. The Stella Vees from Lexington, KY, winner of the 2004 blues contest, edged out Velveeta Jones from Danville, KY to win this year’s contest. Besides sponsorship in the Blues Challenge the band also received $500 and 8 hours of studio recording time at Jeff Carpenter’s Al Fresco’s Place Studios. The other bands participating in the contest included River City Blues, Bluestown, Revaneu, King Sonic and Bullitt County Blues Band. The blues society would like to thank Stevie Ray’s for not only hosting the event but generously donating tickets for Blonde Johnson and Tommy Castro to our raffle held that evening. Thanks also to KBS member David True who donated a copy of his Beale Street poster to the raffle. Peppercorn Catering provided food for the evening and Gene Wickliffe and Mike Lynch of da Mudcats provided drums and other musical equipment for the bands. Thanks to all for making the evening a success.

Studebaker John and the Hawks at Stevie Rays Blues Bar August 31, 2006 On Thursday, August 31, Studebaker John and the Hawks made an appearance at Stevie Ray’s Blues Bar. A sparse crowd of about 10 people showed up to see this Chicago legend, although a few others drifted in and out. Unfortunately, a Thursday night is a bit rough on most working folk (including the author). Cover at the door was supposed to be $5, but there was no one there to collect it. Nothing like free music from a great band!

Studebaker John (John Grimaldi for those of you who are unfamiliar with him) was accompanied by Willie “The Touch” Hayes on drums and Bob Halaj on bass. John’s claim to fame is his use of the slide guitar in most of his songs. He is very accomplished at the slide having played it for 30 years. His first love, though, was the harp. On a couple of songs he played both. John asked if the pa-trons wanted to hear the harp and he got a resounding “YES!”.

Most if not all of the songs that the group played are from their new CD “Self Made Man”. I did not recognize any older tunes. They started the set with “Ride, Ride, Ride” which also starts their CD. Other songs they did off their new CD were “So Happy Together”, “Back in Your Town”, “Self Made Man”, “Fast in the Slow Lane” and others. The live version of their music is exactly like the recorded version. I did not know that until I bought the CD at intermission and lis-tened to it on the way home. I saw John about a year ago and thought that his live show was not as good as his recording. Such was not the case this night.

A real crowd pleaser was “Self Made Man” with its abrupt stops in the music at certain verses. The band pulled it off perfectly. An-other that got the crowd going was harp tune “Fast in the Slow Lane”.

Just as good a performer as John was his drummer, Willie Hayes. He put on a show unlike I have ever seen a drummer put on. He is a very talented drummer and puts some excitement into drumming which I don’t see very often, and not just the twirling stick thing.

This was a worthwhile night for me, and I didn’t mind missing the sleep. When they come back to town, get out there and see them!

Editor’s Note: Fortunately for us, it’s been a pretty busy fall for the KBS, so this review from Bob is a few months old. Even so, I did want to run it for a couple of reasons. I’ll start with reason number two. We really want our members to contribute their thoughts and opinions about the blues, whenever and wherever you find them. Addresses and contact information are in the front of this newsletter. Email, snail mail, Pony Express...if you don’t do the computer thing, don’t worry. Write your review on a nap-kin and give me a call...I’ll come pick it up! But reason number one is that we all need to get out there and support these na-tional acts when they come through town. These small, intimate shows are a lot of fun and a great opportunity to really get inside the blues. Notice the “Rock & Blues Bar” where it used to say “Blues Bar”? We’re in danger of losing this connection altogether if we don’t make more of an effort. It’s my number one New Year’s Resolution...please make it one of yours too. Spinning in the Drawer

At my house Where country meets rock’n roll meets blues meets gospel – sell me a ticket, put me in a seat, or stick a guitar in my hand - just let me be awhile … … Here it is the Christmas/Hollyday season and the Blues Society received not one new Hollyday CD to review.

So here’s what I pulled out of the stack for this XmasHollydayPeriod:

Hollyday songs done up Rock’n Bluesy. Featuring performances by Son Seals, Otis Rush, Charlie Musselwhite, Kim Wilson, Rusty Zinn, Alvin Youngblood Hart, Walter Trout, Michael Burks, Tommy Castro, Barry Goldberg, Paul Oscher, Roy Rogers, Guitar Shorty, and Phil Upchurch, to name some. They blues’n roll us through some familiar names – White Christmas, Silver Bells, Let it Snow, Blue Christmas, I Saw Mommy Kiss-ing Santa Claus and We Wish You a Merry Christmas – to name eight of the sixteen songs offered – if they played this CD on eleva-tors – we could dance our way down the halls to work!

Jonell Mosser First Christmas Brother’s Music 1996 (615) 386 9911 Blackwood Music Inc./Siren Songs

This 4 song extend-a- play-CD is maybe out of print – but what a great little set. This CD features songs written by Ms. Mosser and John and Johanna Hall ( could that happen -just by accident that a John would find a Johanna to marry ? Maybe she took his first name when they got married? ) .

Jonell is a Louisville native who now lives outside Nashville, Tenn. And performs semi-regularly at the Bluebird. Included on this CD are cuts of “Jesus is the Reason”, “Quiet Place”, “Silver Bells” and “Blessing”. A real nightingale – when she sings – everybody listens.

Mary Ann Fisher Song Bird of the South Baby Hippo Records 2002

Another Louisville native, Mary Ann sang with Ray Charles among other notables. Another real nighting gale – when she sings – eve-rybody listens. This CD was recorded shortly before Mary Ann’s death, when she was in her Eighties. Not a Christmas CD at all – but she sings so well and with so much emotion – no one would probably notice the difference. Maybe out of print.

Bob Dipeiro The Red Album 2006 Love Monkey Rcords www.bobdipiero.com Ex-son-in-law of Mel Ta-ta-ta-t-t-tillis

We discovered Bob on the Delbert boat. He has written a lot of hit Nashville Country type songs like “Honky Tonk Flu”, “You Can’t Take the Honky Tonk Out of The Girl” ( they still write about Honky Tonks a lot in Nashville) also wrote Delberts “An Old Feeling Com-ing On”, “The Church on Cumberland Road” and “Mirror, Mirror, on the Wall”. He usually does his comedy stuff between songs when on stage at the Bluebird Café in Nashville or during songwriters on the Delbert boat. Here he branches out with a Hollyperiod song “Too Fat to Fly”,which is a lament from Santa’s Reindeere to Santa about how much weight Santa has gained and how Santa needs a John Deere instead of eight tiny Reindeere for take off. Seems Santa has been hitting the Macaroni and cheese and summer sau-sage and meat loaf and etc. etc. too hard in the off season. Probably unavailable for purchase.

Spike Jones & His City Slickers Strictly For Music Lovers 1999 Proper Records 4 CD English Release

We always played Spike Jones and/or Frank Zappa at meal times here for the kids education. Between those interpreters and LOO-NEY TOONS cartoons ( for OUR classical listening pleasure ) our children – to this day – thank us for their musical educations. With non – Lachrymose mouths. Hah ! Which funny looking duck said that word ? Watching that cartoon got me a high enough grade on my SAT to get into the YALE “if you daddy’s got enough money” program. Unfortunately – my daddy wasn’t an ex-president. Or maybe fortunately. Back to Spike, a rousing rendition of “My Two Front Teeth” ( which causes the singer/chanter to whistle a lot ) which was cut in Chi-cago in 1947; and “Jingle Bells”, which features the entire cast, Iscabible included, and was recorded in concert in 1944 and is about having to ride in a sleigh because there was no gas ‘cause there was a war on. Probably this great set – and others like it – can be found in mark down bins all over the Falls Cities area. Maybe not. If not, they should be.

Rudy the Redneck Reindeer Sterling Entertainment Group

Whoever actually DID the stuff on this CD probably listened to the aforementioned CD’s. Titles listed include: “Redneck 12 Days of Christmas”, ”Chasin’ that Neon Reindeer”, “Santa Got Lost in Texas”, and “Santa’s Gonna Come in a Pickup Truck”. Probably the titles are completely self explanatory and need no comment by me.

Some un-named Bob – namely El Presidente of the KYANA Blues Society – provided me with 2 CD’s of Medieval chants, incanta-tions, and Poly Phony. If you are having the kind of Hollyday period where you really don’t want to be around anyone – don’t want presents and ain’t about to give any – and you have chased the Wassailers around the block several times with a sling shot already – and are in a general bad mood and don’t like this Xmas Hollyday stuff at all – if you’re really DOWN on everything including yourself and can’t see much of a reason to get out of bed much less to do anything – DO NOT listen to these CD’s – it would be like throwing gasoline on a roaring fire.

Well – that about does it for this sparse Xmas Hollyday column. We are dreaming of January 06, 2007 – the day we set sail on Del-bert McClinton’s Sunny Beach Cruises #12, I think. I get the numbers mixed up. We be going to Miami and turning left for St. John’s, St. Martin’s, Puerto Rico etc., for a cruise around the Eastern Caribbean for a week with a bunch of the finest musicans ever gath-ered. Not to mention lots of great people and food. Even if Delbert don’t grant me an interview with hisself – maybe this year I’ll get it together to write it up.

But, how about a night cap ? I gotta special CD for those times when I be feeling sad.
