RegulaRs

After a month of must-see films in January we’ve put together another great run for February and March. In addition to main features such as Carnage, The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel and the return of the Dardenne brothers with The Kid on a Bike, we also have a variety of special events and screenings.

On 12 February we have a special event with a screening of a truly independent British film, Black Pond, followed by a Q&A. Peter Bradshaw called the film ‘a deeply eccentric haunting marvel’ and we hope you’ll agree. On Valentine’s Day we’ve partnered with UK Jewish Film to bring you The Matchmaker, a charming picture of 1968 Israel and on 25 March we bring you ‘Jewish London’, with the authors of the guidebook of the same name taking you on a visual tour culminating with a screening of It Always Rains on Sunday. Also on Sundays we have two chances to see films you may have missed – Kenneth Lonergan’s Margaret and Dreams of a Life. And if that’s not enough, we have three National Theatre performances, two Met operas and a Bolshoi ballet, all live via satellite. We hope to see you soon!

Kids Club On Saturdays at 11am we have an activity every week for kids aged 5–10 followed at midday by a film. A maximum of 20 children can attend the activities. Pre-booking is advised. Tickets are £2 with a group ticket at £10 (5-10 people including 2 adults). The activity session is free. All children under 8 years of age must be accompanied by a responsible adult. No lone adults. Friends discount not applicable.

Early bird These Tuesday screenings finish by 3.15pm (perfect for parents picking up children from school) and include a free hot drink from the kiosk.

bringing up baby Wednesday morning screenings offer parents with babies up to 18 months a chance to see our main feature.

Shot in real time as the four adults meet to settle the dispute, Carnage pits power couple Nancy and Alan Cowan against the liberal writer and campaigner Penelope Longstreet and her wholesaler husband, Michael. Unpredictable and shocking, the film hilariously exposes the hypocrisy lurking behind their polite façade. The film is based on the play God of Carnage by Yasmina Reza which was hailed by critics and public alike and enjoyed sell-out runs in Paris, London and on Broadway after its premiere in 2006. Both Jodie Foster and Kate Winslet are nominated for Best Actress Golden Globe awards for their performances.

On the eve of World War I, Zurich and Vienna are the setting for a dark tale of sexual and intellectual discovery. Drawn from true-life events, A Dangerous Method takes a glimpse into the turbulent relationships between fledgling psychiatrist Carl Jung, his mentor Sigmund Freud and Sabina Spielrein, the troubled but beautiful young woman who comes between them. Into the mix comes Otto Gross, a debauched patient who is determined to push the boundaries. This exploration of sensuality, ambition and deceit sets the scene for the pivotal moment when Jung, Freud and Sabina come together and split apart, forever changing the face of modern thought.

Leopold Socha, a sewer worker and petty thief in Lvov, a Nazi occupied city in Poland, one day encounters a group of Jews trying to escape the liquidation of the ghetto. He hides them for money in the labyrinth of the town’s sewers beneath the bustling activity of the city above. What starts out as a straightforward and cynical business arrangement turns into something very unexpected, the unlikely alliance between Socha and the Jews as the enterprise seeps deeper into Socha’s conscience. The film is also an extraordinary story of survival as these men, women and children all try to outwit certain death during 14 months of ever-increasing and intense danger.

1hr 27. Belgium/France/Italy 2011. Directed by Jean-Pierre and Luc Dardenne. With Thomas Doret, Cécile De France and Jérémie Renier. In French with English subtitles. Winner of the Grand Jury Prize at this year’s Cannes Film Festival, the latest film by Luc and Jean-Pierre Dardenne (Rosetta, La Promesse) centers on Cyril, a restless 11-year-old boy (terrific newcomer Thomas Doret) placed in a children’s home after being abandoned by his father. Unwilling to face the fact that parents are imperfect people, Cyril runs away to his former apartment block in search of both dad and his abandoned bicycle. Instead, he meets Samantha (the excellent Cécile de France), a kind hairdresser who helps to retrieve his bike and eventually agrees to become his weekend guardian. But literally and figuratively, Cyril isn’t out of the woods just yet. Shooting once more in the Belgian seaport town of Seraing, the Dardennes have created another poetic, universally resonant drama about parents, children and moral responsibility.

KioskThe Phoenix Kiosk stocks a range of traditional and delicious cinema food, as well as beer, wine and our popular cake. We have excellent ice cream from Criterion Ices and FairTrade dried fruit. You can buy food and drink from either till as you’re purchasing your ticket, so no need to queue twice.

Cafe BarThe café bar is open from 11am every Monday-Saturday and from 1pm Sundays, serving simple breakfasts and a range of homemade meals and cakes. An express menu is available during busy shows to enable prompt service, so if you’d like to order soups, stews and tasty mezze platters be sure to arrive early.

Now that we have the fastest wi-fi in East Finchley it is a perfect place to work over a big mug of good hot coffee. Or visit us to sample our fantastic range of beers and wines to enjoy on our tree-facing balcony or in our warm, friendly bar area.
