“ There is a subset of the jazz community,

scattered all over the globe, who have

in common a passion for the music of

Michel Petrucciani and a reverence for

his memory. Phil Broadhurst and I are

members. Phil’s Delayed Reaction is the

deepest, most sincere, most meaningful

form of tribute that one musician can

pay another. Petrucciani’s life-affirming

spirit is unmistakably present here. But

most of all what is here is Phil’s personal

understanding of Petrucciani’s music and

new directions derived from it, which is

surely the way Petrucciani would have

wanted it.” - Thomas Conrad, JazzTimes,

Stereophile

The music on this recording was played at

various gigs in NZ before the band went into

the studio to record. In the past I have often

worked the other way round, but this time

there was a familiarity with the material

which really comes across I think.

This album is dedicated to the memory of

the great French pianist Michel Petrucciani

whose life and music I explored in my

Masters thesis. I have arranged five of his

compositions for the quartet and included

five of my own pieces inspired in one way or

another by Petrucciani’s writing and playing.

Of the Petrucciani tunes, Brazilian Like

retains its South American flavour and gains a

new introduction and coda while Guadeloupe

has newly composed bass lines in unison

with the piano which occur throughout and

add to the relaxed atmosphere implied by the

title. La Champagne becomes a song with

lyrics written and sung by Julie Mason, while

One Night in the Hotel remains a piece for

solo piano. The most radical re-arrangement

sees Looking Up recast as a New Orleans

boogaloo with a recurring vamp and

condensed harmonic landscape.

Of the originals, Orange, was inspired by a

visit to Petrucciani’s birthplace in southern

France. Edward, Duke Ellington’s Christian

name, is a samba that honours Michel’s

own Ellington album, while Pat and Matai

Bay have lyrical melodies that echo the

Frenchman’s romantic side. The spacious

fusion flavour of Delayed Reaction reflects

current trends in European jazz.

Phil Broadhurst is one of New Zealand’s

foremost pianists and composers and is

currently the Co-Ordinator of Jazz at the New

Zealand School of Music, Massey University,

Albany. In 2001 he became the first jazz

musician to be awarded the MNZM for

services to jazz.

Roger Manins first sat in with Phil’s trio

at Auckland’s London Bar when he was a

young teenager. He was already an exciting

and inventive player before he left New

Zealand for spells in Sydney and New York.

Resident again in Auckland, he is now

setting an example to the next generation

with his huge talent.

Olivier Holland, who sailed to New Zealand

from Germany, has become a leading

player on the local scene. His rich tone and

empathy for the music can be heard on every

track of this album. A true jazz professional.

Alain Koetsier is the youngest member of the

band, and first came to notice as a top-flight

drummer while still a student at Massey

University. Taught by Frank Gibson, Alain’s

technique and imagination are an invaluable

asset to the quartet.

Julie Mason is one of NZ’s leading jazz

singers and teachers. She sings her own

lyrics for La Champagne beautifully. Mike

Booth’s return from Holland has boosted

the small pool of great NZ trumpeters

immeasurably.

Thanks to: Roger, Oli, Alain and special guests Julie and Mike for your great contributions to this album, Steve for all your work recording, mixing and mastering this album, Ron Samsom for your support and encouragement, Cameron for the use of your photo, Carolyn for your design, Rattle Records, and the musicians who played with the quartet in the past and helped shape the music: Pete France, Alberto Santarelli and Jono Sawyer - PB
