The acronym “PHCC” is made up of just four little letters, but the last two – “CC” - are the most important. Patrick Henry is, after all, a community college. We are an institution designed to educate our community. Indeed, our sole reason for existence is serving the peo-ple of Martinsville, Henry County, Patrick County and Franklin County. That should never be forgotten. It should also be remembered that PHCC is constantly shaping these communities. The education our students receive has an immediate impact on our region. PHCC graduates are your co-workers, neighbors, bosses and friends. They are current and future leaders. That’s been the case for the past 50 years, and it will be the case for the next 50, too. That’s why supporting the PHCC Foundation is one of the most impor-tant things you can do. Donating to the Foundation – or volunteering your time – has a direct, indisputable link to students improving their lives through education.

And study after study has shown that education levels are critical to the health and prosperity of every community. An educated workforce begets better busi-ness. Period. We ask that you support the PHCC Foundation because we need these funds. Quite simply, they enable us to do things – scholarships, facility improvements, sup-port our teachers – that would otherwise not happen. It really is that simple. In exchange, we promise to leverage our resources – not waste them. As a com-munity college, we know the impact of our efforts will be felt close to home, because an investment in the PHCC Foundation is an investment in a PHCC student. And an investment in a PHCC student is an investment in our community. Thank you for supporting the Foundation and the future of this community.

A scholarship fund established more than 20 years ago at PHCC will help even more students pre-pare for careers in the field of nurs-ing thanks to a generous infusion of funds by the donor’s children.

The gift from the Irby children was made in memory and honor of their father and their mother, Margaret Price Irby, in the hopes that the support will help “the program grow and contin-ue to serve the medical community of Martinsville and Henry County.”

“As you know, Dad dedicated his life to serving others through and outside of his medical practice. He had a strong love and respect for the nurses that worked beside him and valued their contributions to patient care. We feel Dad especially respected the caring and nurturing qualities that the nurses brought to the healing process,” the Irby siblings wrote in a letter to the PHCC Foundation.

“We hope that when awarding these scholarships to your stu-dents, you impress upon them Dad’s recognition of the impor-tance of being a caring and lov-ing human as well as a techni-cally proficient nurse.”

Jethro H. Irby III, Prudence Irby Swerlick, and James L. P. Irby each contributed $5,000 to the Dr. Jethro Hurt Irby Endowed Nursing Scholarship established by Dr. Jethro H. Irby, Jr. in 1991. Dr. Irby had a long-standing family practice in Martinsville and deliv-ered more than 5,000 babies during his medical career. Dr. Irby passed away March 26, 2012.

Honor Roll of Donors Continued

She wants to become an elementary school teacher, ideally at one of her alma maters, Collinsville Pri-mary.

“I was inspired with my elementary school teach-ers and how they affect little kids,” said Yaritza, age 19, a 2011 graduate of Bassett High School. “I want to know how to educate and teach students so they enjoy school.”

Yaritza said she chose PHCC as her first college destination because it was close to home and “a good introduction to college life.” Remaining in the Martinsville area allows her to stay close with her father, her mother, Martha, and her two younger siblings, Hector and Noelya.

Yaritza has earned three scholarships each year from the PHCC Foundation. Those awards have covered up to 75 percent of her tuition, a “huge help,” she said.

After Patrick Henry, she plans to transfer to a four-year institution to earn her bachelor’s degree. She also has her sights set on a master’s degree at some point, she said.

Then she wants to come back home to teach – a dream that can be traced back to Hector and Martha Santiago.

“They’re supporting me,” said Yaritza, “so I’m going to keep on studying and become somebody.”

Meador is assistant professor of adminis-

trative support technology and legal assist-

ing. Profitt is instructor of mathematics.

Distinguished Faculty Award winners

each receive a medallion and a monetary

award from the PHCC Foundation.

The PHCC Agricultural Research Center opened in Uptown Martinsville to study how vacant warehouses might be repurposed as indoor “farms,” where cash crops like lettuce might be grown.

The work of PHCC art students goes on exhibit at the end of each academic year. A collection of pieces purchased by the foundation is on permanent display in the Learning Resource Center.

Dr. Godwin spent her first days as PHCC’s new president getting to know the faculty, staff and students.

For as long as she can remember, Yaritza San-tiago’s father has been encouraging her to attend college.

That’s because Hector Santiago, the father of the current PHCC sophomore, earned a college degree but hasn’t gotten to enjoy its benefits.

Hector Santiago received an accounting degree from a university in Mexico before moving to the United States at age 27. When he got here, however, he discovered that he could not practice accounting in the U.S. without a degree from the U.S.

As such, he’s provided for his family by working in area factories for most of his adult life. But at the same time, he’s made it clear to Yaritza, his oldest daughter, that earning a college degree was of the highest priority.

“He encourages me to be a better person, to be someone I want to be. To reach my goals,” she said.

And Yaritza has known her goals for quite some time. She’s pursing a general studies degree at PHCC with an emphasis in teacher education preparation.

Santiago wants to teach in hometown

Commonwealth Scholars

Three Patrick Henry Community College students have been awarded Commonwealth Legacy Scholarships through the Virginia Foundation for Community College Educa-tion (VFCCE) in Richmond. Alysha Lawless and Hannah Pegram have been named Gerald R. Baliles Commonwealth Legacy Scholarship winners, and Gunnar Robertson was awarded the Floyd and Marietta Smith Commonwealth Legacy Scholarship (for more on this scholarship, see the “Making A Difference” story below).

Lawless, the daughter of Carla Prillaman and Donnie Law-less, attended Magna Vista High School. A Martinsville resi-dent, she graduated with honors, carrying a 3.7 grade point average. She plans to study horticulture at PHCC before transferring to Virginia Tech.

A 16-year-old homeschooler, Pegram is the daughter of DeAnna and Thomas Pegram of Ridgeway. She plans to take General Studies classes at PHCC for one year before transferring to Virginia Military Institute, where she hopes to compete on the VMI women’s soccer team and major in pre-med biology.

Robertson, the son of Judy and Jerry Robertson of Bas-sett, was an honor graduate from BHS and a multi-sport athlete. He will pursue an Associate in Arts and Sciences degree in General Studies at PHCC before transferring to a four-year college or university to major in a health care field.
