Location:
Students who choose AACP will be abreast to the culturally and technologically rich
city, BANGALORE.
Bangalore lies in the southeast of the South Indian state of Karnataka. Due to its high
elevation, Bangalore usually enjoys a more moderate climate throughout the year. It is
known as the "Garden City of India" because of its gentle climate, broad streets,
greenery and the presence of many public parks. The diversity of cuisine is reflective
of the social and economic diversity of Bangalore. Life in Bangalore is safe and is
also more compatible for foreigners with many star hotels available for the
comfortable stay of parents/guardians. Connectivity to Bangalore from the other parts
of the country and globe is excellent.
The standard of quality of education in Bangalore has always been higher with several
world renowned educational institutions coupled with highly flourishing
biotechnology and pharmaceutical industries.
DOCTOR OF PHARMACY COURSE:
Pharm. D and Pharm. D (Post Baccalaureate)
In 2011, Al-Ameen College of Pharmacy started the patient centered course “Doctor
of Pharmacy” which was approved by the Government of India in the year 2008 with
the Pharmacy Council of India being the apex body governing it.
The ultimate goal of this course is to prepare students to assume the roles of
leadership and service contributing to the humane society by contributing in patient
care areas as the member of the healthcare team.
Pharm. D is a 6-year program during which the first 5 years are academically oriented
and final year will be completely bound to internship in the hospital.
Page 7
7
Pharm. D (Post Baccalaureate), a lateral entry for the B. Pharmacy graduates is a
3-year program which consists of 2 years of academics and one year of internship in
the hospital.
Role of Pharm. D in Healthcare:
By the end of the course, the clinical pharmacists graduating from Doctor of
Pharmacy course will develop and acquire competencies (knowledge, skill, and
attitude) to provide pharmaceutical care services, drug and poison information to the
healthcare team, conduct patient counseling, identify drug-drug interactions, monitor
adverse drug reactions, carry out therapeutic drug monitoring, help in drug dosage
adjustments in special population and patients with renal or hepatic dysfunctions,
assist/co-ordinate in the conduct of clinical trials, promote rational use of medicines,
and ultimately contribute to the better patient care.
There is a huge requirement for the Pharm. D course in a country like India where
there are numerous drug related problems, irrational drug use and non-compliance to
the therapy among patients suffering from various chronic diseases. Pharmaceutical
care by a physician along with the technical expertise of the clinical pharmacist is the
ultimate and the best way of achieving the desired patient care.
OPPORTUNITIES FOR PHARM.D & PHARM.D (PB) GRADUATES:
Medical Writing
These professionals write information related to healthcare, medical profession and
medical science in general, for industry professionals as well as general audiences.
Not everyone has the skill set required to do this type of work and Pharm. D graduates
are ideally suited for these lucrative jobs.
Hospitals and Healthcare Centers
As society’s health care needs have changed and expanded, there has been an
increased emphasis on provision of care through drug information, poison information
and pharmacovigilance activities. Pharm. D graduates will find placement in hospitals
as Drug Information Pharmacist or Clinical Pharmacist, providing pharmaceutical
care.
Clinical Trials
With a large number of pharmaceutical companies opting for clinical trials, the
industry is heading towards a business worth 1.4 billion by way of clinical trials.
Pharm.D graduates here have a scope to work as clinical research associates and data
managers.
Community Pharmacy and Consultant Pharmacists
Pharmacists can serve patients and community by proving information and advice on
health such as providing medications and associated services, and by referring
Page 8
8
patients to other sources of help and care such as physicians when necessary.
Likewise, advances in the use of computes in pharmacy practice now allow
pharmacists to spend more time educating patients and maintaining and monitoring
patients records. Pharm. D graduates have opportunities to be entrepreneurs by
starting their own community pharmacy.
Academic Pharmacy
As faculty members, they can work in pharmacy colleges involving in teaching,
research, public service, and patient care.
Pharmacovigilance and Drug Safety
There is shortage of jobs in this field as high-quality pharmacovigilance practice
makes for good business dealing. Graduates in this field can get jobs in various
pharmaceutical companies and earn attractive and handsome salary packages.
Al-Ameen College of Pharmacy has collaboration with St. Philomena’s Hospital,
a 400-bed Multi-specialty Hospital in Bangalore.
