Mrs. S.Chadaway of South Shields, was recently fitted with a pacemaker which has

changed her life enormously, and to show her appreciation to the medical staff of the

cardiovascular department, she decided to knit for the heart charity.

Having now made a number of articles she is

now seeking more wool to assist her in her quest

to help the British Heart Foundation, as well as

other charities. This is in order to raise money for

research into the improvement of cardiovascular

care.

Large or small amounts of wool would be

gratefully appreciated, and can be forwarded to

W.Bro. B. Smith, Prov.GJD of the Bernard Gilpin

Lodge of MMM No. 860, Hetton - Le - Hole,

Thank you, B.Smith.

“ Springtime joy for a special Garden Centre ““ Just in time for the new season, W.Bro. Allan Gurney, Provincial Grand Secretary, and V.W. Bro. Roy Neville,

Provincial Grand Charity Steward, presented £500 to the Shaw Trust Garden Centre at Park side in Seaham on

behalf of the Province of Durham Mark Benevolent Committee. The ' Shaw Trust ' enables adults with limited

learning ability and autism to enjoy an occupation which is beneficial to both their health and the community.

The grant will be used to create a concrete pathway to a new raised bed area which was not previously accessible

to wheelchair users. Our Mark team, were extremely impressed with the dedication shown by Paula Maddison-

Green, Enterprise Manager, and her team and enjoyed meeting everyone at the Shaw Trust Garden Centre. “

Anyone who was in Seaham between 6am and

7am during the month of March, might have been

surprised to see our Mark Provincial Grand Secretary,

W.Bro. Allan Gurney, marching along the seafront in

all weathers. ‘Why?’ You may well ask!

It all began in February when Allan saw an advert

on TV on behalf of Cancer Research UK. Like many

of us, Allan was deeply moved by the stories of

families affected by cancer and was especially moved

by the stories of children living with cancer. It made

him think about how many people he knew personally

who had suffered from, and in some cases, died from

that hateful disease, family members, University

friends, Masonic friends and their families, and

members of the Seaham Harbour U3A of which Allan

is also a member.

Allan is pictured at the end of the month at the iconic

’Eleven -‘O’- One’ (‘Tommy’) statue on the seafront at

Seaham, along with Bro. Paul Herbert, a member of

his Craft Lodge (Fawcett No. 661). Paul is a ‘cancer

survivor’.

Paul’s story is worthy of an article in its own right:

having collapsed while visiting his parents in Norfolk in

July 2017, he was diagnosed as having a tumour in

the back of his head, which had affected his spine.

Brought back up to the RVI in Newcastle, he had a

partial removal of the tumour, and had to wear a ‘halo’

for 9 weeks, only for the tumour to return bigger than

before. This resulted in a partially successful second

operation to again reduce the size of the tumour.

Eventually, in July 2018, Paul, accompanied by his

wife, Anne-Marie, was sent by the NHS for ‘Proton’

treatment to America – which meant 11 weeks away

from home, flights and accommodation paid for, but

with contributions from the Masonic Charities

towards living expenses. When he returned, results

showed that the progress of the cancer has been

slowed, but not eradicated. Paul also needed an

operation to restore his voice, which had been

affected by all his treatments. Paul is now feeling

much better, but has a long way to go, and is only just

getting back to attending Fawcett Lodge.

So that is why Allan decided to take up the

challenge of ‘Walking All Over Cancer’ , the task being

to raise money for Cancer Research UK by walking

10,000 steps for each day in March, a minimum of

310,000 steps over and above his normal walking.

Armed with a good pair of walking shoes, he began on

1st March, and finished 385,645 steps later (176.51

miles in total) on 31st March, raising a total of £1,270

to date, a total which can still be added to, if anyone

wishes to do so. Simply contact Allan!

UNITY LODGE OF MMM NO. 827 have

again Installed as their Worshipful Master

for another year W.Bro. Joe Higginbottom,

and he was congratulated by W.Bro. John

Nicholson, the Representative of the RW

PGM, and he wishes the lodge another

great year.

Ken Moore welcomes Robin Knight on board as a

joining member.

A terrific night in Shildon when on 15 April 2019 the Hackworth Lodge of

Royal Ark Mariners No. 761 installed Bro. Kenneth Moore as the Worshipful

Commander for the ensuing year. Ken was really looking forward to being

installed as commander and he wasn't disappointed, the ceremony was very

ably conducted by the officers of the lodge. He was also delighted and amazed

how many brethren had travelled to Shildon to be at the meeting, including both

the Deputy and Assistant Provincial Grand Masters' W.Bro. David Hanson and

W.Bro. Ronald Trevor Lynn.

The festive board had been well prepared which even included candelabras

on the tables. W.Bro. Ken had also been extremely busy with making several

information boards telling the story of the founding of the Hackworth RAM

Lodge No.761 and a long list of it's Worshipful Commanders.

He was also inspired to design and make a copy of the ' Royal Ark' which was

the main raffle prize of the evening. It contained a selection of goodies as

'cargo' as well as some dubious crew members and of

course the animals 'one by one' were on board.

An excellent Royal Ark Mariner evening thanks to the

warmth and hospitality of the Hackworth Lodge of RAM

No.761 and their new Worshipful Commander, W.Bro.

Kenneth Moore.

RYTON LODGE OF MARK

MASTER MASONS NO. 1714.

At their meeting on the 12th of

April 2019 there was a double

celebration with a brother to

Advance on this their 25 year

anniversary since the lodge was

consecrated in 1993.

The special evening was further enhanced with the presence of the Provincial Grand Master and team of

Officers together with many other visiting brethren.

This evening Bro. Steven Goss was Advanced to a Mark Master Mason, he is a keen Mason glad to have made

such an important step in furthering his masonic knowledge in such an excellent lodge.

Tomark this importantmilestoneof 25 years the brethrengave their best attention to aCelebratoryOration fromV.W.

Bro. Keith Dinning, PGJO.

At this meeting 8 Mark Brethren who were from the group of Founding Brethren of the lodge were present and they

continue to build on the firm foundationswhichwere dug deep, and laid sowell, by the founders and succeeding Past

Masters for the past 25 years, a wonderful achievement which will surely keep the Ryton Mark lodge successful.

The PERCY LODGE OF MARK MASTER MASONS NO.122 in Stockton were the hosts for a Provincial Team

Visit on the 11th April 2019. The beautiful interior of this Masonic Hall a very worthy setting for the warm welcome

which the many visiting brethren received. The work of the evening was to receive a talk by W.Bro. D.Marshall

with the intriguing title; " A History of Anti - Freemasonry". A short quote from the introduction gives a glimpse of

the subject matter; "Historically, anti-Masonry always enjoys a resurgence during periods of extreme religious and

political intolerance. The Masonic encyclopedist, Henry Wilson Coil, was of the opinion “ that persecution of

Freemasons has stemmed entirely from dogmatic or frenzied types of religious conviction or dictatorial or

authoritarian government”. WBro. Marshall in his talk gave a illuminating history and context on this subject.

MAY 2019INFORMATION

Mark & RAM Provincial Lodge of InstructionThe Provincial Lodge of Instruction was founded in 2006 with the aim of portraying a Ceremony of

Advancement or Elevation in accordance with the most recent edition of the Mark & Royal Ark Mariner

Rituals.

As members of both the Mark & Royal Ark Mariner Degrees we owe it to every Candidate for Membership to

receive them into our orders with a dignified and eloquent ceremony.

In addition to portraying a Ceremony of Advancement or Elevation, the Lodge of Instruction, when requested,

can also provide competent members to those Lodges which may be short of Officers. The Lodge of

Instruction gives each and every member the opportunity of partaking in our ceremonies.

Each year in the Autumn a Lodge of Instruction Festival is held, when all members of Mark and Royal Ark

Mariner Lodges in the Province are invited to attend. The format for the 2019 Festival, which will be held at

Shiney Row Masonic Hall on Tuesday 29th October, is to demonstrate a Ceremony of Advancement, which

will be followed by a three course dinner.

The continued success of the Lodge of Instruction Festival depends on your support.

Trevor Lynn, Lodge of Instruction Preceptor.

Darlington Lodge of Mark Masters No. 250

At the March meeting of the Darlington

Lodge of Mark Masters No 250, the

Worshipful Master, W.Bro. Maurice

Bartle, PPrGSW, gave an excellent talk

and slideshow on the development and

impact of the bicycle. The talk which was

entitled ‘Velocipedes’ was superbly

delivered without a script in the presence

of the Assistant PGM, W.Bro Trevor

Lynn, who was attending the Lodge on

an Official Visit.

W.Bro. Bartle, who is a sprightly 87 year

old, and still a keen cyclist, owns a

wonderful collection of over 100 vintage

velocipedes of all shapes and sizes

dating back to the 1800’s, as well as

several modern day racing bicycles.

The evening was rounded off with an

excellent Festive Board, with the usual

Masonic Toasts, and Maurice proudly wheeled in one of the latest additions to his collection, a carbon fibre racing

bicycle used in the Tour de France race by the United States Postal Service Pro Cycling Team. The bicycle is so

light it can easily be picked up with one finger.

Pictured is W.Bro. Trevor Lynn (Asst PGM.) and W.Bro. Bartle (WM)
