EDITORIAL.... The Life Of
‘Īsā u A Prophet Of Islam
The birth of ‘Īsā u (Jesus)
As we read in the previous issue Maryam u would stay engaged in Ibādah day and night, Zakariyya
u and the custodians of Bayt-ul-maqdis were really happy with her Ibādah , devotion to Allāh S and
her abstinence from the world. She would prostrate and bow only to Allāh S and without necessity
would not leave the complex of Bayt-ul-maqdis.
Once it so happened that she went to the eastern part of Bayt-ul-maqdis to perform ghusl (bath),
when all of a sudden the angel Jibrail u appeared before her in the form of a human. Being a noble
and chaste women, she became disturbed and said “I seek Allāh S’s protection from you, do not
come near me and leave me if you fear Allāh S.” The angel explained, “i am an angel of Allāh S, he
has sent me with glad tidings that you will have a son.”
She argued “ How can I have a son, when no man has ever come near me?” To which the angel
replied, “Allāh S is almighty. When he wishes to do something, then it happens. It is easy for him.
You will have a son his title and name will be Masih ‘Īsā ibn Maryam (‘Īsā the son of Maryam) u .
He will be a sign of Allāh S for mankind. He will be honoured in this world and the next, he will be
from amongst the righteous and from those who are the nearest to Allāh S. He will speak to people
whilst still in his cradle and will grow to become a great Prophet of Allāh S. He will be taught the
book, will be given wisdom and will be made a messenger for the children of Israel.”
Allāh S wanted to show mankind that he is able to do anything he wanted, thus he chose Maryam
u for a great miracle and show man that he is able to create a child without a father just as he
created Adam u without a mother or father. Though this was the will of Allāh S, Maryam u

Muḥammad s: The Perfect Ex-ample
By Shaykh Mawlānā Muhammad Saleem
Dhorat hafizahullah
Abū Sufyān ibn Ḥarb t relates that Heraclius had sent a messenger to him while he (Abū Su-
fyān t) had been accompanying a caravan from the Quraysh. They were merchants doing busi-ness in Shām (Syria, Palestine, Lebanon and
Jordan), at the time when Allāh’s Messenger s had a truce with Abū Sufyān and the Quraysh
pagans. So Abū Sufyān t and his companions went to Heraclius at Ilyā (Jerusalem). Heraclius called them in the court and he had all the senior Roman dignitaries around him. He called for his translator who, translating Heraclius’ question said to them, ‘Who amongst you is closely re-lated to that man who claims to be a Prophet?’ Abū Sufyān replied, ‘I am the nearest relative to him (amongst the group).’
Heraclius said, ‘Bring him (Abū Sufyān) close to me and make his companions stand behind him.’
Abū Sufyān t added, ‘Heraclius told his trans-lator to tell my companions that he wanted to put some questions to me regarding that man (the
Prophet s) and that if I told a lie they (my com-
panions) should contradict me.’ Abū Sufyān t added, ‘By Allāh! Had I not been afraid of my companions labelling me a liar, I would not have
spoken the truth about the Prophet s.’ The first question he asked me about him was:
‘What was his family status amongst you?’ I re-plied, ‘He belongs to a good (noble) family amongst us.’
Heraclius further asked, ‘Has anybody amongst you ever claimed the same (i.e. to be a prophet) before him?’ I replied, ‘No.’
He said, ‘Was anybody amongst his ancestors a king?’ I replied, ‘No.’
Heraclius asked, ‘Do the nobles or the poor fol-low him?’ I replied, ‘It is the poor who follow him.’
He said, ‘Are his followers increasing or de-creasing (day by day)?’ I replied, ‘They are in-creasing.’
He then asked, ‘Does anybody amongst those who embrace his religion become displeased and renounce the religion afterwards?’ I replied, ‘No.’
Heraclius said, ‘Have you ever accused him of telling lies before his claim (to be a prophet)?’ I replied, ‘No.’
Heraclius said, ‘Does he break his promises?’ I replied, ‘No. We are at truce with him but we do not know what he will do in it.’ I could not find an opportunity to say anything against him except that.
Heraclius asked, ‘Have you ever had a war with him.’ I replied, ‘Yes.’ Then he said, ‘What was the outcome of the battles?’ I replied, ‘Sometimes he was victorious and sometimes we.’
Heraclius said, ‘What does he order you to do?’
I said, ‘He tells us to worship Allāh S and Allāh
S alone and not to worship anything along with Him, and to renounce all that our ancestors had said. He orders us to pray, to speak the truth, to be chaste and to keep good relations with our kith and kin.’
Heraclius asked the translator to convey to me the following. ‘I asked you about his family and your reply was that he belonged to a very noble family. In fact all the Messengers come from no-ble families amongst their respective peoples. I questioned you whether anyone else amongst you has claimed such a thing, and your reply was in the negative. If the answer had been in the affirmative, I would have thought that this man was following the previous man’s state-ment.
Then I asked you whether anyone of his ances-tors was a king. Your reply was in the negative,

and if it had been in the affirmative, I would have thought that this man wanted to take back his an-cestral kingdom. I further asked whether this man was ever accused of telling lies before he said what he said, and your reply was in the negative. So I wondered how a person who does not tell a lie
about others could ever tell a lie about Allāh S. I, then asked you whether the rich people followed him or the poor. You replied that it was the poor who followed him. And in fact all the Apostles have been followed by this very class of people. Then I asked you whether his followers were increasing or decreasing. You replied that they were increasing, and in fact this is the way of true faith, till it is com-plete in all respects. I further asked you whether there was anybody, who after embracing his relig-ion, became displeased and discarded his religion. Your reply was in the negative, and in fact this is (the sign of) true faith, when its delight enters the hearts and mixes with them completely. I asked whether he had ever betrayed. You replied in the negative and likewise the Apostles never betray.
Then I asked you what he ordered you to do. You
replied that he ordered you to worship Allāh S and
Allāh S alone and not to worship idols along with him and forbade you to worship idols and ordered you to pray, to speak the truth and to be chaste. If what you said is true, he will very soon occupy this place underneath my feet and I knew it (from the scriptures) that he was going to appear but I did not know that he would be from you, and if I could reach him definitely, I would go immediately to meet him and if I were with him, I would certainly wash his feet.’
The noble and graceful character of Rasūlullāh s is in total conformity to all the natural needs of man. His perfect human nature, sublimity of character, long suffering and forgiveness, magnanimity and
grace, valour, benevolence, trust in Allāh S, mod-esty, honesty, humility, purity of heart, self denial and forbearance, devotion and piety, fear of Allāh
S, mercy, compassion and generosity in all he is a perfect and beautiful example and a complete code of life for all.
For rulers and heads of states, the life of the Chief and King of the Arabs holds a perfect example. For the poverty stricken, the life of the one in whose house the fire was not lit for two months holds an example. For the warriors and conquerors, the life of the Warrior of Badr and the Conqueror of Mak-kah holds a beautiful example, who forgave even his bitterest enemies. For those who have turned their backs on this world, the life of the Lone wor-shipper in the solitude of the cave of Hirā is an ex-ample. For the labourers the one who laboured strenuously in the digging of the trench before the Battle of Khandaq is an example. The orphans can find solace if they look at the Orphan of Āminah. The businessmen may inculcate honesty and piety within them, by looking at the life of the one who handled business in Syria. For the imām and judges, the great Imām and Judge of Masjid-an-Nabawī, who pronounced justice, without distin-guishing between strong and weak is a worthwhile lesson.
In a nutshell, there remains no facet of the life which has not been covered by the noble life of Ra-
sūlullāh s and in which there is not a beautiful ex-ample to follow.
Verily in the Messenger of Allāh you have a good example for him who looks unto Allāh and the last day, and remember Allāh abun-dantly. (33:21)
We must all study this great life which is a beacon light for every human, and imitate this greatest per-
sonality in every mode of our lives. May Allāh S
enlighten our hearts with the love of His Rasūl s.

DOWNFALL OF THE
UMMAH
By Mawlānā Emran Ahmed (London)
(Graduate of the famous Islāmic Daʻwah Academy)
The Muhajirin and the Ansar had been brought up in two completely different environments and each of them felt some sort of supremacy over the other group, while the Ansar themselves were divided into two factions which had the fires of war raging between them for years. The Muslims who had come from places far and wide such as Habasha (Ethiopia) and other parts of the world suddenly con-verged on the land of Madinah.
In terms of nationality and language, a majority of them differed from one an-other however, the most powerful of re-lations that existed amongst all these people - keeping in mind the differences that were also there - was the relation-ship of true faith and religious brother-hood through which the enmity, hatred and other negative effects that their dif-ferences created amongst themselves, were removed from their hearts.
The enemies, who at that time were des-perately seeking the downfall of the Muslims, struggled and are continuing to struggle (even today) to cut the firm roots of unity from amongst the Muslims and to remove this affinity from the Mus-lim nation. By bringing up a series of is-sues that are not related to the funda-mental principles (of the religion), they
have been able to light the fire of differ-ence amongst the Muslims. This is not only the goal of the enemies of our pre-sent time - rather, from that first day that this Islamic commandment was given, those who wanted bad things to come to the Muslims struggled to break the unity and accord.
One day, a group of young men from the tribes of Aws and Khazraj (two tribes from `Arabia that had been at war for countless years. Yet, under the shadow of Islam and true faith, were able to come together as brothers of one another and have love rule between them both) were sitting together.
A Jew from Madinah named Shas ibn Qais who was very jealous of the unity that had been brought about between these two tribes, entered into their gath-ering and through the shrewdness that he possessed, started to speak about and remind them about the bitter moments that had transpired between these two tribes during the battle of Ba`ath before the coming of Islam. He spoke in such a manner that he was able to instigate the youth of both tribes to reach for their swords causing them to re-ignite the war of Ba`ath.
The Prophet s was informed of what was transpiring and he himself went to this gathering and gave a speech in which he mentioned, “Islam made you brothers of one another and commanded you to remove any form of hatred or grudges that remain in your heart.”

When the Prophet s uttered these beauti-ful words, the deafening sound of crying and weeping could be heard and in order to attest to the religious brotherhood that existed amongst them, they began to hug each other and asked Allāh S for forgive-ness.
If on that day a man named Shas existed (that caused such turmoil), then today too there are those who under different names, different physiognomies and dif-ferent shapes are trying to stir up corrup-tion within the Muslim society. It is these people who are trying to strike devastat-ing blows to the unity and harmony of the Muslims.
Shaikhul Hind v (Shaikh Maḥmūdu'l-Ḥasan
Deobandi) says “we see today the down-fall of the Ummah is because they have left the quran and have become dis-united.”Unity was a common feature in our salaf which too is very important for
our success. In a collective effort it is no doubt a backbone as disunity results in the loss of the Help of Allāh S. Once in the time of ‘Umar t , a group of Sahābah y were faced with a large enemy force. Seeing the swelling ranks of the enemy, a difference of opinion arose in whether they should advance or take a back step and gain further reinforcements. As they could not decide, they wrote to ‘Umar t. ‘Umar t replied that in such circum-stances, unity is our way. Because people like us when we become united, we are not defeated due to less numbers.
The way to bring unity is to follow the haqq and look at the bigger picture of things and sacrifice one’s own desires and wishes. We also need to adopt the atti-tude of forgive and forget to remain united.

Going Shopping
"A person will be rewarded even when he spends money on his own family. However, this reward is dependent upon the person’s intention; if the intention is to acquire the Pleasure of Allāh ta'ālā, he will be rewarded.
Therefore, when going shopping for groceries, clothes etc. make the intention, 'I am doing this to ful-fill the Command of Allāh ta'ālā of feeding and clothing my family and I am doing this for His pleas-ure only.' Inshā'allāh, you will be entitled to reward. It is unfortunate that we do not make an intention of pleasing Allāh ta'ālā whilst carrying out those actions which we normally carry out as routine. If only we could learn to make the correct intention at the right time, then all our apparent worldly actions would become a means of acquiring reward and the Pleasure of Allāh ta'ālā."
