Marine Science

▫SONAR is a system using transmitted and reflected underwater sound waves to detect and locate submerged objects or measure the distance to the floor of a body of water.

▫The most famous shipwreck to date located with Klein side scan sonar has been the Titanic, found in 1985.

The Process of Science

•What is Science?•Scientia (Latin) – meaning knowledge•Science is a way of knowing based on

testable claims supported by…

Observation and Experimentation

knowledge gained in this way is called Empirical Knowledge

Page 6: Pg 12 RTW: Approximately half of the world’s catch of fish is made up of five kinds of fish, what do you think they are? Objective: Review what science.

The Process of Science

•What is NOT science?

▫Non-science is any knowledge that cannot be verified empirically (obs. & exp.) Feeling, emotion, authority, religion

▫Pseudoscience is any knowledge that claims to be scientific but is NOT verifiable by process of science. Astrology, numerology, etc.

Why Study Marine Science?

•What are three general reasons to study Marine

Science?

Page 8: Pg 12 RTW: Approximately half of the world’s catch of fish is made up of five kinds of fish, what do you think they are? Objective: Review what science.

Why Study Marine Science?

•Explaining the Natural World

▫Marine Science can help you to understand how the oceans play a vital role in our world.

Oil

FoodWeather and Climate Patterns

Why Study Marine Science?•Preparing For a Career

▫Many sciences, professions, and careers draw on basic marine science. These disciplines include: atmospheric science, astronomy, ecology, biomedical research, environmental science, etc.
