Almighty God, whose most dear Son went not up to joy but first he suffered pain,
and entered not into glory before he was crucified: mercifully grant that we, walking in the way of the cross,
may find it none other than the way of life and peace; through Jesus Christ your Son our Lord,
who is alive and reigns with you, in the unity of the Holy Spirit,
one God, now and for ever. Amen.
First Reading – Isaiah 55.1-9
The LORD says this: Everyone who thirsts, come to the waters; and you that have no money, come, buy and eat! Come, buy wine and milk without money and without
price. Why do you spend your money for that which is not bread, and your labour for that which does not satisfy? Listen carefully to me, and eat what is good, and
delight yourselves in rich food. Incline your ear, and come to me; listen, so that you may live. I will make with you an everlasting covenant, my steadfast, sure love for
David. See, I made him a witness to the peoples, a leader and commander for the peoples. See, you shall call nations that you do not know, and nations that do not know you shall run to you, because of the LORD your God, the Holy One of Israel,
for he has glorified you. Seek the LORD while he may be found, call upon him while he is near; 7let the wicked forsake their way, and the unrighteous their thoughts; let
them return to the LORD, that he may have mercy on them, and to our God, for he will abundantly pardon. For my thoughts are not your thoughts, nor are your ways
my ways, says the LORD. For as the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways and my thoughts than your thoughts.
Second Reading – 1 Corinthians 10.1-13*
I do not want you to be unaware, brothers and sisters, that our ancestors were all
under the cloud, and all passed through the sea, and all were baptized into Moses in the cloud and in the sea, and all ate the same spiritual food, and all drank the same
spiritual drink. For they drank from the spiritual rock that followed them, and the rock was Christ. Nevertheless, God was not pleased with most of them, and they
were struck down in the wilderness. Now these things occurred as examples for us, so that we might not desire evil as they did. Do not become idolaters as some of
them did; as it is written, ‘The people sat down to eat and drink, and they rose up to play.’ We must not indulge in sexual immorality as some of them did, and twenty-
three thousand fell in a single day. We must not put Christ to the test, as some of them did, and were destroyed by serpents. And do not complain as some of them
5
did, and were destroyed by the destroyer. These things happened to them to serve
as an example, and they were written down to instruct us, on whom the ends of the ages have come. So if you think you are standing, watch out that you do not fall. No
testing has overtaken you that is not common to everyone. God is faithful, and he will not let you be tested beyond your strength, but with the testing he will also
provide the way out so that you may be able to endure it.
Gradual Hymn*
1. As the deer pants for the water,
so my soul longs after you. You alone are my heart’s desire
and I long to worship you.
You alone are my strength, my shield, to you alone may my spirit yield.
You alone are my heart’s desire and I long to worship you.
2. I want you more than gold or silver,
only you can satisfy. You alone are the real joy-giver
and the apple of my eye.
3. You’re my Friend and you’re my Brother, even though you are a king.
I love you more than any other, so much more than anything.
There were some present who told Jesus about the Galileans whose blood Pilate had
mingled with their sacrifices. He asked them, ‘Do you think that because these Galileans suffered in this way they were worse sinners than all other Galileans? No, I tell you; but
unless you repent, you will all perish as they did. Or those eighteen who were killed when the tower of Siloam fell on them - do you think that they were worse offenders
than all the others living in Jerusalem? No, I tell you; but unless you repent, you will all perish just as they did.’ Then he told this parable: ‘A man had a fig tree planted in his
vineyard; and he came looking for fruit on it and found none. So he said to the gardener, “See here! For three years I have come looking for fruit on this fig tree, and still I find
none. Cut it down! Why should it be wasting the soil?” He replied, “Sir, let it alone for one more year, until I dig around it and put manure on it. If it bears fruit next year, well
and good; but if not, you can cut it down.”’

Offertory Hymn*
1. In Christ alone my hope is found,
he is my light, my strength, my song; this Cornerstone, this solid Ground,
firm through the fiercest drought and storm. What heights of love, what depths of peace,
when fears are stilled, when strivings cease! My Comforter, my All in All,
here in the love of Christ I stand.
2. In Christ alone! – who took on flesh, fullness of God in helpless babe!
This gift of love and righteousness, scorned by the ones he came to save:
till on the cross as Jesus died, the love of God was glorified
for every sin on him was laid: here in the death of Christ I live.
3. There in the ground his body lay,
light of the world by darkness slain: Then bursting forth in glorious day
up from the grave he rose again! And as he stands in victory
sin’s curse has lost its grip on me, for I am his and he is mine –
bought with the precious blood of Christ.
4. No guilt in life, no fear in death, this is the power of Christ in me;
from life’s first cry to final breath, Jesus commands my destiny.
No power of hell, no scheme of man, can ever pluck me from his hand;
till he returns or calls me home, here in the power of Christ I’ll stand.
for thy flesh is meat indeed; ever may our souls be fed
with this true and living bread; day by day with strength supplied
through the life of him who died.
2. Vine of heaven, thy blood supplies
this blest cup of sacrifice; Lord, thy wounds our healing give,
to thy cross we look and live: Jesus, may we ever be
grafted, rooted, built in thee.
Words: Josiah Conder (1789-1855) Music: Bread of Heaven, William Dalrymple Maclagan (1826-1910) (Ancient & Modern – 430)

Post Communion Prayer**
Merciful Lord, grant your people grace to withstand the temptations
of the world, the flesh and the devil, and with pure hearts and minds to follow you, the only God;
through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
Final Hymn*
1. Guide me, O thou great Redeemer, pilgrim though this barren land;
I am weak, but thou art mighty; hold me with thy powerful hand;
Bread of heaven, feed me now and evermore.
2. Open now the crystal fountain, whence the healing stream doth flow;
let the fiery cloudy pillar lead me all my journey through;
strong deliverer, be thou still my strength and shield.
3. When I tread the verge of Jordan,
bid my anxious fears subside; death of death, and hell’s destruction,
land me safe on Canaan's side; songs of praises, I will ever give to thee.
Words: Arghwydd, arwain trwy’r anialwch, William Williams (1717-1791), tr Peter Williams (1727-1796) Music: Cwm Rhondda, John Hughes (1872-1932) (Ancient & Modern – 652)

Psalm 12 salvum me fac
E J Hopkins
1 Help me, Lord, for there is not one | godly ∙ man | left : for the faithful are minish’d from a- | mong ∙ the | children ∙ of | men.
2 They talk of vanity every one | with his | neighbour : they do but flatter with their lips,
and dis- | semble ∙ in their | dou-ble | heart.
3 The Lord shall root out all de- | ceit-ful | lips : and the tongue that | speaketh | proud — | things;
4 Which have said, * With our | tongue will ∙ we pre- | vail : we are they that ought to speak, * | who is | lord ∙ over | us?
E J Hopkins
5 Now for the comfortless troubles’ | sake of ∙ the | needy : and because of the deep | sigh-ing | of the | poor, 6 I will up, | saith the | Lord :
and will help every one from him that swelleth against him, | and will | set him ∙ at | rest.
7 The words of the | Lord are | pure words : even as the silver which from the earth is tried,
and purified | seven ∙ times | in the | fire. 8 Thou shalt | keep them, ∙ O | Lord : thou shalt preserve him from | this ∙ gener- | ation ∙ for |ever.
†9 The ungodly walk on | ev’ry | side : when they are exalted, * the children of | men are | put ∙ to re- | buke.
Glory | be ∙ to the | Father,
and to the | Son and ∙ to the | Ho-ly | Ghost; As it was in the beginning is | now and ∙ ever | shall be :
world | with-out | end, A- | men.
