Thank you for your enquiry regarding Patricia Piccinini's Skywhale performance. . .

Please find ·~elow an outline of operating parameters and asso~iated costs.

Operational Requirements· and Restrictions

Although the Skywhale is a commissioned sculpture by the.Centenary of Canberra, it is· .also a regi~tered aircraft. This _makes it somewhat unusual when. co~sid.ering its role as a bcine-fide sculpture. ·

The Skywhale is effectively a _spedal shaped hot air b·alloon.designed in 3D by Patricia Piccinini and build by Cameron Balloons in the United Kingdom. The colours, patterns

·and te.xtures have·been carefully printed onto 3,535 metres of fabric. The Skywhale was cut and sewn together by a team of six people us.ing approxim~tely 3.3 million stit\:hes!

It has been designed to fly and is basically an Australian Registered aircraft. Th i's effectively means it is. 'controlled by a pilot and is operated under thl;! Australian Standards pertaining to ·avia_tion . .'

The Skywh.ale is not. a cold. inflatable that is erected and then left in s.itu .. It is operateq by a commercial pilot and a trained ground assistant and is ·inflated by burning LPG and· heating the inside of the Skywhale to keep it standing.

The Skywhale when inflated stands 24 metres high and is ·36 metres in length -: ~asiCally it is huge ....

Attending and !Event ·

_When considering the Skywhale at your event there are a few aspec~s that you may wish to consider.

. . . Free ·flight - the Skywhale is made to fly. For the purpose of med_ia exposure it is good to look at a free flight over your event-with media, VIP or a;,,bass.ador. When we free fly obviou~ly the Skywhale will drift With the wind·- so the flight path would be determined by the wind on ~he day. If we .free fly then we would be ·unlikely to tether giveh the tim_e·it takes inflate, fly and to pack away .. ·

Tether -This is when the Skywhale is attached to the ground with ropes. This becomes . . . . . . a static installation giving people the chance to see the s~ulptwre without us blowing away.·

Speice- Ha'(e you got a big enough area to inflate this mythical behemoth? As a rule.· we· wo'uld love to.ha~e a. space clear of obstacle~ in_ the vicinity of 50 square metres to inflate the SkywhalE:1. The inflati~~ .process starts with the fabri~ laid out. a'.Jd a pet~ol fan is used to cold inflate her. Once the she is inflated the footprint becomes that of the basket (1:2m x 1.2m). If conditions are calm people are free to wander around and

. underneath her, - evet'I liop in the basket with the pilot. ·

Page 6: Pettit, Eliza Fro I To · 1 Obstacles:-We do riot like sharp obstacles around her as she is made of nylon and.can rip quit.e easi.ly. We particularly° do not like powerlines -I g·uess

(

Obstacles:- We do riot like sharp obstacles around her as she is made of nylon and.can rip quit.e easi.ly. We particularly° do not like powerlines - I g·uess that g~es without saying .

l

. we:iather· - given the surf~ce area of the Skywhale - it effectively i~ a giant 'whale of a SCJil'. Wind plays a big factor in whether we can get the Sculpture up_. Winds over 8l<m on th~ surface mean that the Skywhale becomes unruly - over 12km it becomes untenable and unsafe. Rain clearly is also something to be avoided. ·

Out~oor Venues·- When.considering outdoor venu~s - we like ~lean spaces. ·Grass is great. The best venues are. those that offer the best protection from wind. · .

Indoor Venues:- W~ love indoor venues -·if you have a stadium or space big enough for· he_r to'fit- our joq becomes very easy, as we have no weather considerations to consider. Of course appr~vals wo·uld be required to achieve thJs perfect t.ether scena.rio.

logistks

The Skywhale packs down to two packages.of around 1.4 Metres Square. This includes ·the 1;2 m x 1.2 m basket with 4 LPG tanks and _burn~rs plus the Skywhale 'envelope' · which weighs around 350 Kg. This and all the other related equipment loads onto a trailer about 6 metres x.2.5 meters and i.s ~enerally towed behind a four-wheel drive

. .vehicle ..

The equip~·ent can also be land or air freighted and then put in the bac;:~< of a ren.ted van or truck .if trailers are not available. ·

The Skywhale travels with a team of pilqt and crew chief although it does require 3 addit"ional crewmembers to assist with the set up'a.nd pack up. Ideally these crewmembers ar~·sourced-local.lytcne-duc-e-travel/irtcomm-odaticm a-n-d~m-e-al-co:sts~------~--

How nit w.orrks

The whole process of setting up the Skywhale takes ·approxim~tely 45 minutes from ·arriving to it being inflate.d. Gene.rally we operate either early in the morning or later in the evening to capitalise on the light winds. This is not to say the Skywhale cannot operate in the middle. of the day - it just is not the m.osf optimal time from a meteorological standpoint. ·

If the Skywhale is being tethered then ropes will be attached and she will .stay in that position for the entire time - which generally wiil be about 2-3 hours d!;!pending on the weather.

If the Skywhale is being free flmNn the location of launch will vary based on wind . direction and where she· is expected tq fly. Obviously things like terrai.n and suitable · 't~nding area's are most important. A free .flight will generally be for one hour.

Pac;:king away th.e Skywhal~ takes about one hour .-·although this may vary based on the amount of helpers available.

Page 7: Pettit, Eliza Fro I To · 1 Obstacles:-We do riot like sharp obstacles around her as she is made of nylon and.can rip quit.e easi.ly. We particularly° do not like powerlines -I g·uess

(

Once the Sl(ywhale is back on the trailer it is then taken to a se~ure location out of the weather to be parked and stored.

General Costs

· The general costs associated with a Skywhale performance are as follows

Operating Cost (per 2hr tether/ lhr free flight)

Travel Days

Wea_ther days (pilot and 3 crew)

Transport Costs (4x4 Vehicle and Tra.iler)

Accommodation

Meals for crew

Global Ballooning_mar.iagement fees

$3500 pl_us GST

$400 per 10hr day

$1250.00 plus GST

$1.20 per km

Supplied.

At Cost

$120-per hour plus GST

For events outside of Aus.tralia items such as freight wiU-be quoted once established. Effectively the more _an event can supply the less we will be. required to charg'e for our f'.lanagem.ent services.

Note* .For overseas evE'.nts we may utilise the bottom end equipment from local' balloon operat_ors to save ~>n freight charges.

The figures form only indicative costs"' the a.ctual costs ofa perf~rmance will be quoted once we have established all the event details~

. If volunteers or staff is av;;iilabfe to assist we .will be able to reduce the cost of operation.

' .

Cancelation 1P1ol~cy ·

It is a·Clvisable to build into your event a weather day·to give us.the best chance of success. Our teah1 will do everything possible to achieve a positive;! outcome although given that most of t_he operating costs are in being on site Global.Ballooning Pty Ltd will re'quire 80% of the operating fees to be paid if the Skywhale is unable to operate due to weather or other forces-beyond our c.ontrol.

Hi/

. Thanks for thi.s. As I mentioned] and I have spoken about the t~ther taking place on Saturday 26 October. ·Good if Sunday 2]1h can be kept as a b~ck-up in case the weather is not.good .o.n the 26th. And good perhaps for you to consider whether you would go ahead with .t.he other-public programming, and how, in the event the w~ather

· was not conducive!

/ number is\

As I mentioned, flights over this period are being charged by Global Ballooning at) but this is below normal commerciai° r9te.s and I would ask you please to keep that confidential, lest it.create an expectation for the future

. about what a hot air balloon flig.ht can be.done for. .

,t ~he appearance was ea lied off on the morning of the tether itself, there may still be a small percentage of that "amoui:it to be paid ~or the.call time fo~\ and his crew. But they would do their utmost to get the work up on

one of those days;

·I know we have one of the original design drawings fromj . which, remarkably, turned out to be how.the work . appears-which is a testament to the manufacturer. I will get that drawing from Helen Berwick, who has it by email,

and forward it to you. If that suits your purpose, I'll let\ know. If you think another drawing is required, I'll let \ . ' .

her !<now that too.!

As "'{e discuss~d, le.t me know after you~ve confirmed it's logistically all-good With\ and we'll get it up on our scheduled appearances on our.website. · · . · . · '

Thanks, it's wonderful to have this enthusiasm for the work from the local arts community, after a lcit of thoughtless and baseless criticism; these appe.arances over this time are really.helping to establish Canberra as the home of the work, reg9rdless that from next year she becomes a world traveller.

Cheers Julian.

·Hello Julian

Thanks for your time on the phone this afternoon.

As discussed, the next step will b.e for the pilot to visit C.anberra Glassworks I Megalo Kinston precinct next week to -sight the best tethering location. .

Megalo and Canberra Gla,ssworks both pla·n to run public programming around Skywale to provfde good community arts _engagement · · · ·

. .

yanberra Glassworks would still IJke.to pursue the ·idea of translating a drawing that\ ;, Jates into glass· on the hotshop floor. Although she is currently overseas, if she crea_ting a 1 •

drawing and emailed it, we could have a team of glass blowers execute her idea in glass.

We would also love to have the opportunity to have work with a team of glass blowers at Canberra.-Glassworks. · · · · : ·
