THE BALI BIRD OF PARADISE
I AM SO COLOURFUL…There are many kinds of bird-of-paradise, all of which have truly beautiful displays, and most are found on the island of New Guinea. Forty types are known to biologists, all highly memorable because the plumage of the male birds is so wonderfully colourful. Particular kinds have highly elongated and elaborate feathers extending from the beak, wings and head, and give mating displays that can take your breath away. You are only ever likely to see them on film, though, because they mostly live in inaccessible, dense rainforest habitats.
KEEL BILLED TOUCAN
HAVE A LOOK ON MY BEAK…At first sight this seems quite a threatening creature, but the Keel-billed, Sulfur-breasted or Rainbow-billed Toucan, is truly a splendid sight to see. This South American bird, the national bird of Belize, spends its time high up in the canopies of rainforests.
THE EURASIAN GOLDEN ORIOLE
I AM SO BEAUTIFUL…The Eurasian golden oriole is distributed all around Europe and Asia except for the northern areas. In the British Isles it can be found only in eastern England. During winter, generally by November, orioles move down to Africa and go back to Eurasia in March. They live in woodland areas. Oriolus oriolus is 25 cm in size (10 inches). Its plumage is yellow almost all over the body. The wings are black with a yellow stripe in the middle. Between the eyes and the bill there is another black stripe. The bill is small and yellow as wellTheir diet ranges from small animals to berries and fruit. The females have got up to four cream colored eggs.
