Marinera

• “National Dance of Peru”

• Graceful and romantic dance that is a reenactment of courtship.

• The entire dance tells a story of love. Every movement means something different in this dance about “courtship”.

Marinera History

• Blend of Spanish, Moorish, Andean and Gypsy rhythms.

• Former name of the dance was called “chilena” because of the friendly relations with Chile. The name changed because Peru went to war with Chile. Marinera is named after the Peruvian Navy.

• The dance itself is from native Peruvian background.

Styles of Dance

• Different schools teach different styles of the dance.

• Most important competitions is called “Concurso Nacional de Marinera”

• There are 3 main variations: Marinera Limeña, Marinera Norteña and Marinera Serrana.

Marinera Variations

• Marinera Limeña - elegant and slow paced.

• Marinera Norteña - quick paced and the most popular variation.

• Marinera Serrana - typical from the highland and mountain regions in Peru. Slower movements.

Peruvian Cuisine

• Staples of Peruvian cuisine - corn, potatoes and beans.

• The variety of climates in Peru determine the variety of local cuisine.

• Peruvian food got a lot of influence from Spain but later they would be influenced by China, Italy, west Africa and Japan.

Ceviche

• raw fish cut into pieces and marinated in lime juice, onions and aji limo (a type of pepper).

• The recipe differs from region to region.

• Typically served with sweet potato and toasted corn.

• Many Peruvians believe that ceviche is the hangover cure.

Lomo Saltado

• strips of sirloin marinated in vinegar, soy sauce and spices. Cooked with red onions, parsley and tomatoes. Served with rice and french fries.

• Peruvian dish with asian influence.

Cuy chactado

• A dish that is popular in the highlands. Fried guinea pig.

• The guinea pigs are raised in huts and are able to run around loose on the floors of the dwelling.

• Often cooked with other meats and vegetables.

What makes the country special and different from the other countries in the Americas?

• Although I have not studied other countries in South America, it seems to me that Peru is a country that was able to hold on to its native influences.

• From Peru’s food to its dance, Peruvians have kept a little bit of their history glued into their culture.

• In Peru you can still find many natives that even speak the native tongue of Quechua.
