Since the 1987 appearance of A Dictionaryof Modern Legal Usage, Bryan A. Garner hasproved to be a versatile and prolific writer onlegal-linguistic subjects. This compilation of hisessays shows the great breadth of his scholar-ship, covering subjects as wide-ranging aslearning to write, style, persuasion, contractualand legislative drafting, grammar, lexicography, writing in law school, writing in law practice, judicial writing, and all the literature relating tothese diverse subjects. Garner leavens his essayswith the light humor and wry wit that his read-ers have come to expect.
Some have called Garner a controversialist, and he doesn’t shrink from controversy here: hetakes aim at legal academia, at word-bunglinglaw reviews, at writers who intersperse citationswithin the main body of their writing, at judgeswho use extremely arcane words, and at themany conventions that tend to mire legal writ-ing in perpetual mediocrity.
In one of the most entertaining chapters—“Bizarreries”—Garner takes on judges who punon litigants’ names, legal writers who mangleLatin, and, in one of the most extended yet en-tertaining exchanges imaginable on such a sub-ject, people who argue that “Sincerely” is anerroneous complimentary close.
There are moving tributes to ProfessorCharles Alan Wright, Judge Thomas GibbsGee, and Sir Robert Megarry (whose last bookGarner finished). There are piquant bookreviews that damn the work of some famouswriters, such as Lynne Truss (Eats, Shoots &Leaves) and the linguist Stephen Pinker, as wellas enthusiastic recommendations of books thatGarner finds meritorious.
In the final chapter, Garner collects “recom-mended sources on language and writing.” Thisselect bibliography is like no other because itguides you to seminal texts in virtually everylanguage-related field, from brief-writing toplaywriting to poetry to linguistics to generalsemantics.
In her preface, Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburgdeclares the book to be “a `must read’ primer”for her law clerks. Anyone with a lively interestin language, writing, and law will find this bookhard to lay aside.
