PREFACE
The International Meloidogyne Project (IMP) was initiated on July 1, 1975 and is funded by the United States Agency for International Development through a contract with North Carolina State University. The aim of this organization is to coordinate and cnnduct research on the development of integrated crop protection systems for effective management of rootknot nematodes, Meloidogyne species. Worldwide distributon, extensive host ranges and involvement with fungi, bacteria and vi.uses in disease complexes place these nematodes high on the list of disease agents affecting the world's food supply.
The initial organization of the IMP involved grouping the cooperating developing countries into six geographical regions based roughly on country proximity, prevalent agricultural crops, and similar soils and climate. To date, eight project regions have been established: Region I, Central America and the Caribbean; Region II, South America; Region III, Brazil; Region IV, West Africa; Region V, East Africa; Region VI, Asia; Region VII, the Middle East and Mediterranean; and Region VIII. India. During the 8-year history of this Project, well over 200 people from at least 70 countries have participated at one time or another.
Project cooperators in the various regions collect root-knot nematodes from diverse crops and habitats for study by personnel at the project center in Raleigh, N.C. More importantly though, the cooperators conduct basic and applied research in their own laboratories, greenhouses and fields, on pathogen variability, host resistance and on many other aspects of the biology and control of these pests. Results of these studies have been presented at various IMP research and planning conferences held within each region abouL every 21/2 years. These workshops of 1-week duration have provided an excellent opportunity for those working within a given region to present their research findings, to discuss new techniques and methodology, and to plan future cooperative research.
Some cooperators have been active with the Project since its inception; others have joined only recently or participated only occasionally. Also, there has been a substantial amount of turn-over in numbers of cooperators from specific countries. Therefore, though this directory does not represent every contributor, it does list most of those who have been associated with the project and those currently active.
In addition to the overseas cooperators, many nematologists in the United States and Canada are engaged in various aspects of research on root-knot nematode management. Several of these scientists have nade valuable contributions to the IMP ecological survey by supplying Meloidogyne samples, climatic data, and cropping history information.
iii
These occasional contributors have also been included here, even though they are not formally connected with the IMF. By listing these scientists, the publication will be more complete a.d more useful to persons interested in contacting other professionals engaged in a particular aspect of root-knot nematode research.
It is hoped that this compilation of names and addresses will facilitate increased communication and collaboration among Project members. In addition, the names and addresses of IMP coo,;erators will be made more accessible to agri-business personnel traveling within each region and country. This list will provide an initial con.,act with the nematologists of each country and facilitate the introduction of new nematicides, new specialized equipment and resistant cultivars into areas where they are most needed. Our intention is to distribute this directory widely and make it a useful document among r':1 atologists in the network, as well as agribusiness personnel and others wishing to make contacts with nematologists working ia developing nations.
