Functional Analysis of Behavior: Match the behavior to the function that best describes why the child is
performing it:
Claire raises her voice at her mother while violating her personal space because she
doesn’t want to do her homework.
Greg wants a cookie but he cannot reach the table that they are on so he engages in
excessive hugging of his father to persuade him to reach the cookie for him.
Doug loves the color green. In school he sees his teacher is wearing a green top. He remains close to his teacher all day, constantly touching
her green shirt.
Florence, Helen, and Laura are all standing next to each other in line as the prepare to go outside and play. Florence and Helen are
talking about what they will do outside. Laura starts to continuously poke Florence and when she is asked to stop she begins to hug both

Session X, Activity Sheet 8A For Kids: Self-‐Awareness Goal #2
Use these Social Stories to help your child understand why personal space invasions are inappropriate and help him or her understand that there are other ways to fulfill the function of their space invasion
behavior.
General Awareness of Personal Space When I talk to other people sometimes I stand too close. I need to remember to step back and stand at least an arm’s length away from a person People don’t like it when I stand too close Its not polite to stand too close. It is polite to respect other’s personal space and leave at least an arm’s length of space between us when we talk. I like being polite and respectful toward others because they enjoy spending time with me.
