Personal Profile I am a writer, researcher and PhD student who specialises in representations of Antarctica in cultural production. With a background in languages (BA in German with First Class Honours, University of Auckland), I have now turned my attention to the south. My interests include how Antarctica has been used and depicted in the theatre and in advertising, as well as human interactions with and imagined versions of the southern continent. These are all topics on which I have lectured whilst working on board an Antarctic cruise ship. I am a strong researcher, writer and speaker, something reflected both in my academic achievements and my publications to date. Academic Qualifications 2014-2017: Enrolled in PhD program, University of Tasmania (UTAS) 2012-2013: Master of Antarctic Studies, University of Canterbury (UC) 2012: Postgraduate Certificate in Antarctic Studies (Distinction), (UC) 2011: BA (Honours) in German with First Class Honours, The University of Auckland (UoA) 2010: BA in German and English, (UoA) Fellowships, Honours and Awards 2014: Awarded Elite Australian Postgraduate Award for PhD at UTAS 2013: Summer Studentship for COMNAP (Council of Managers of National Antarctic Programs) and the University of Canterbury 2013: First place in University of Canterbury ‘Tweet Your Thesis’ Competition 2013: ZONTA Travel Grant to attend Scientific Committee for Antarctic Research workshop in Cambridge, UK 2013: Travel Award from NZ Federation of Graduate Women 2012: Awarded University of Canterbury Masters Scholarship 2011: Awarded the Professor John Asher Graduate Scholarship in German 2011: First in Course Award German 702 (UoA) 2010: Graduated BA in German and English with Senior Prize in German (UoA) 2009-1010: Summer Studentship at Auckland Bioengineering Institute (UoA) 2009: DAAD Scholarship for Students reading German Literature 2009: Semester Abroad in Freiburg, Germany (April - August) 2008: Senior Scholarship in German (UoA) Affiliations Council co-chair of Association of Polar Early Career Scientists (APECS) Member of SCAR (Scientific Committee on Antarctic Reseach) Humanities and Social Sciences Expert Group Secretary of the New Zealand Antarctic Society (Canterbury Branch) Hanne Nielsen Academic CV IMAS-Hobart University of Tasmania Private Bag 129, Hobart, TAS 7001 +64 3 550 7170 +64 21 057 0749 [email protected] www.represantarctic.wordpress.com

PhD Project Not For Sale?: Symbolic Representations of Antarctica for Commercial Purposes Antarctica is unique in that is governed by the Antarctic Treaty System (ATS) and is not ‘owned’ by any one nation. Despite this, and the environmental protection built into the ATS, Antarctica has been ‘sold’ in many ways. Ever since the Heroic Era, the exotic lure of the Far South has been used by explorers as a way to gain sponsorship for expeditions. In more recent times, the tourist experience of the continent is a prime example of a commercial operation that offers a particular version of the South. As advertisements make use of ideas that already in cultural circulation, they provide an ideal medium for this investigation into Antarctic tropes and representations. Gaining an understanding of the narratives that have been associated with Antarctica and how Antarctica has been used to facilitate a range of commercial transactions will provide an insight into the ways the continent has been imagined, conceptualised and represented. This in turn will help to create a better understanding of the ways Antarctica has been valued, in a variety of senses.
