Purpose

How do we innovate ourselves?

This year's buzz term is clearly "innovation" - having brutally pushed "disruption" of its soapbox.

Whilst companies are grappling with what this means on a practical and process level, does innovation begin at home?

7

Page 8: Personal Innovation - Academy Xi THINK

The real question?

Can success factors of business innovation be used in a personal context?

8

Page 9: Personal Innovation - Academy Xi THINK

Creating a common ground

What is innovation?

9

Page 10: Personal Innovation - Academy Xi THINK

“Innovation effectively is the process of technological change… the thing to really understand is that innovation is a process

not a thing. The thing, the outcome of innovation, is the invention. Innovation is

deeply associated with business processes, business models and all the different aspects

that combine towards creating a new product or service.”

–Dr James Moody - PhD, Innovation Theory

- Founder Tu-Share & Sendle 10

“Innovation being synonymous with

growth. Companies that aren’t innovating

aren’t growing.”

Crisis

Definition

• any event that is, or is expected to lead to, an unstable and dangerous situation affecting an individual, group, community, or whole society.

• a stage in a sequence of events at which the trend of all future events, especially for better or for worse, is determined; turning point.

16

Page 17: Personal Innovation - Academy Xi THINK

CrisisCrisis drives innovation

• Crisis provides a compelling reason for action - you can’t run away from a crisis

Examples

• War > Nuclear

• Climate change > Renewable energy

• Global financial crisis > ??

17

Page 18: Personal Innovation - Academy Xi THINK

Examination

Definition

• To observe carefully and critically

• To inquire into and investigate

18

Page 19: Personal Innovation - Academy Xi THINK

Examination

• What are the goals and objectives for my business?

• What changes are happening in my industry and how will they affect my company?

• Do we need to change something to achieve our objectives?

• What would happen if we were to explore new opportunities?

19

Page 20: Personal Innovation - Academy Xi THINK

Diversity

Definition

• the inclusion of individuals representing more than one national origin, color, religion, socioeconomic stratum, sexual orientation, etc.

• a point of difference.

20

Page 21: Personal Innovation - Academy Xi THINK

Diversity

• Different viewpoints working on the same problem.

• Different backgrounds bring different ways of solving a problem

• Diversity unlocks innovation by creating an environment where “outside the box” ideas can be heard

21

Page 22: Personal Innovation - Academy Xi THINK

Collaboration

Definition

• to work, one with another; cooperate,

• working with others to do a task and to achieve and realise shared goals

• to work together (relationships) toward (process) something in common (outcomes).

22

Page 23: Personal Innovation - Academy Xi THINK

Collaboration

• I know what I don’t know

• Teamwork is essential to getting things done.

• Collaborating with partners, suppliers, customers and other stakeholders to find a solution.

• Innovation IS a collaborative pursuit

23

Page 24: Personal Innovation - Academy Xi THINK
Page 25: Personal Innovation - Academy Xi THINK

Creativity

Definition

• the ability to transcend traditional ideas, rules, patterns, relationships, or the like, and to create meaningful new ideas, forms, methods, interpretations, etc.; originality, progressiveness, or imagination:

25

Page 26: Personal Innovation - Academy Xi THINK

Creativity

• The ability to think outside the box

• unleashing the potential of the mind to conceive new ideas, new ways of doing things and innovative solutions

• to perceive the world in new ways, to find hidden patterns, to make connections between seemingly unrelated phenomena, and to generate solutions

26

Page 27: Personal Innovation - Academy Xi THINK

Adjustment

Definition

• to change (something) so that it fits, corresponds, or conforms;

• to adapt or to correct to achieve a desired outcome

27

Page 28: Personal Innovation - Academy Xi THINK

Adjustment

• Constantly testing hypothesis and reviewing the results to see if we are on track or off track in achieving our goal

• Test / Fail / Learn or “Failing Fast” is THE process of adjustment

• When results are not what we expected we change tack.

28

Page 29: Personal Innovation - Academy Xi THINK

Resilience

Definition

• the process of overcoming (and ability to recover from) stress and adversity

• perseverance for long term goals

29

Page 30: Personal Innovation - Academy Xi THINK

Resilience•Achievement is the product of effort, a function of the intensity, direction, and duration of one’s exertions towards a long-term goal.

•Not giving up when the results of our activities are not what we hoped.

•A business’s ability to adapt and evolve in response to short term shocks and at the same time shape itself to be able to respond to long term challenges.

30

Page 31: Personal Innovation - Academy Xi THINK

The journey

Can we use these same themes to drive personal innovation?

31

Page 32: Personal Innovation - Academy Xi THINK

Personal innovation

What is innovation when viewed from a personal context?

32

Page 33: Personal Innovation - Academy Xi THINK

“Innovation effectively is the process of personal growth… the thing to really

understand is that innovation is a process not a thing. The thing, the outcome of innovation, is the psyche. Innovation is

deeply associated with life processes, self models and all the different aspects that

combine towards creating a new version of who we are.”

36

Page 37: Personal Innovation - Academy Xi THINK

Creating a new version of who we are

1. What is the Psyche?

37

Page 38: Personal Innovation - Academy Xi THINK

The Psyche

• Ancient Greek ψυχή (psukhḗ) term for “soul” or “spirit”

38

Page 39: Personal Innovation - Academy Xi THINK

The Psyche

• psyche refers to the forces in an individual that influence thought, behaviour and personality.

39

Page 40: Personal Innovation - Academy Xi THINK

Creating a new version of who we are

2. How do we go about understanding the psyche?

40

Page 41: Personal Innovation - Academy Xi THINK

Psychology

• Ancient Greek ψυχή (psukhḗ, “soul”) and -λογία (-logía, “study of”)

41

Page 42: Personal Innovation - Academy Xi THINK

Psychology

• the study of mind and behaviour.

42

Page 43: Personal Innovation - Academy Xi THINK

Philosophy

43

Page 44: Personal Innovation - Academy Xi THINK

Philosophy

• the most basic beliefs, concepts, and attitudes of an individual

• the study of the general and fundamental nature of reality, existence, knowledge, values, reason, mind, and language.

44

Page 45: Personal Innovation - Academy Xi THINK

Key Elements of Personal InnovationDo the same themes from “Innovation Inside” interview

series work in a personal context? 1.Crisis 2.Examination 3.Diversity 4.Collaboration 5.Creativity 6.Adjustment 7.Resilience

46

Page 47: Personal Innovation - Academy Xi THINK

Crisis

• personal crisis occurs when an individual can no longer cope with a situation.

• usually brought about by changes to the individual’s role or environment that require radical restructuring of the individual’s view of themselves and their world

47

Page 48: Personal Innovation - Academy Xi THINK
Page 49: Personal Innovation - Academy Xi THINK

Examination

“The unexamined life is not worth living”

- Socrates

• “Human Being” is marked by the capacity to transcend instinct and desire and to make conscious, ethical choices

49

Page 50: Personal Innovation - Academy Xi THINK

Diversity

“You are the average of the five people you spend the most time with.”

- Jim Rohn

50

Page 51: Personal Innovation - Academy Xi THINK

DiversityWe are unconsciously un-diverse.

• Most people, according to Brian Uzzi’s research, choose people strategically based on three principles:

1. We unconsciously identify the most important qualities we are looking for in people within our network (often these are the same qualities we already have).

2. We look for others who share those qualities.

3. Find those new people through people we already know.

51

Page 52: Personal Innovation - Academy Xi THINK

Collaboration• When we are in active sharing with others - sharing

deep secrets, sharing what's on our mind, sharing our dreams and aspirations, the brain lights up like a Christmas tree (Temporo Parietal Junction or theTPJ)

• This behavior activates a high level of oxytocin, which is the neurotransmitter that enables us to bond and connect with others deeply.

• How to share passions, dreams and aspirations:

• Create opportunities to be open and transparent with others about your dreams - and share, share, share!

• When we are open with others - we send signals that we trust them with things that are personal to us. We bring people into our private space and trust they will not harm us in any way.

52

Page 53: Personal Innovation - Academy Xi THINK

Creativity

"Doing what we already know how to do takes the world from 1 to n, adding more of the familiar. But every time we create something new, we go from 0 to 1. The act of creation is singular, as is the moment of creation, and the result of something fresh and strange.”

- Peter Thiel, Co-founder of PayPal

53

Page 54: Personal Innovation - Academy Xi THINK

Adjustment

• The maintenance of emotional equilibrium in the face of internal and external stressors. This is facilitated by cognitive processes of acceptance and adaptation.

54

Page 55: Personal Innovation - Academy Xi THINK

Resilience

• Woody Allen once quipped that 80 percent of success in life is just showing up.

• Resilience determines who shows up.

55

Page 56: Personal Innovation - Academy Xi THINK

Resilience

5 key character traits:

• Courage

• Conscientiousness

• Perseverance

• Integrity

• Excellence

56

Page 57: Personal Innovation - Academy Xi THINK

Courage

Definition:

• the quality of mind or spirit that enables a person to face difficulty, danger, pain, etc., without fear; bravery.

57

Page 58: Personal Innovation - Academy Xi THINK

Conscientiousness

• Achievement oriented rather than dependable

• The achievement-oriented individual is one who works tirelessly, tries to do a good job, and completes the task at hand, whereas the dependable person is more notably self-controlled and conventional.

58

Page 59: Personal Innovation - Academy Xi THINK

Perseverance

“… achievement is the product of talent and effort, the latter a function of the intensity, direction, and duration of one’s exertions towards a long-term goal.”

- Prof. Angela Lee Duckworth

59

Page 60: Personal Innovation - Academy Xi THINK

Integrity

“the ability of people, communities, and systems to maintain their core purpose and integrity among unforeseen shocks and surprises.”

- Andrew Zolli, Futurist & Author

60

Page 61: Personal Innovation - Academy Xi THINK

Excellence

Resilient people don’t seek perfection, but instead strive for excellence.
