SME-EF Scholarship Application: Student Statement

I am a junior mechanical engineering major at Texas A&M University. I am also the oldest of seven children, three of whom are in college. An SME Education Foundation scholarship would greatly assist with my educational costs.

I have chosen to major in mechanical engineering for several reasons. First, the breadth of this discipline provides an educational foundation that will enable me to further explore the field of engineering. Secondly, I have been passionate about mechatronics, a subfield of mechanical engineering, ever since competing in the FIRST Tech Challenge Robotics World Championships in high school. As captain of a robotics team, I particularly enjoyed designing the robot’s mechanical systems. A career as a practicing engineer in industry is my vision. Acquiring in-depth knowledge of mathematics and physics will give me the tools I need to solve real-world problems. Improving my communication skills will help me share relevant technical knowledge with my co-workers and customers. During my education at Texas A&M, I have led students in group projects in many of my engineering classes. I am continuing to seek out leadership opportunities in my education and in my career. Leading by example, I hope to demonstrate integrity and ethical responsibility. My first educational objective is to earn a bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering from Texas A&M. I intend to obtain engineering certifications, and to become licensed as a professional engineer. I also plan to gain experience in mechatronics, which is highly relevant to manufacturing engineering. Finally, I want to pursue life-long learning by staying up to date in my field. I am thankful for my education, and I try to serve others by improving processes and sharing skills. Should I receive this scholarship, I will strive to inspire others, applying my knowledge to serve the community.

Letter Of Recommendation

Engineering Technology Building 2023 Department of Industrial and Systems Engineering Texas A&M University, College Station, Texas 77840 January 21, 2013 Dear SME-EF Scholarship Selection Committee: I am pleased to recommend Daniel Chacko for an SME Education Foundation Scholarship. I have known Daniel since the fall 2012 semester as his Engineering Economy instructor at Texas A&M University. During the semester, Daniel asked questions in class, came to my office hours, and performed consistently well on homework and exams. He finished the semester with one of the top scores in the class. Daniel’s academic, extracurricular, and professional accomplishments distinguish him as an ideal candidate for this award. Not only has Daniel excelled in my Engineering Economy class, he has done so in many of his other classes, having been listed on the Dean’s Honor Roll for the Fall 2012 semester. While a full-time mechanical engineering student, Daniel is also president of a student organization named South Asian Connection, in which position he has been able to assist and get to know many international students. He is also president of the Texas A&M Roadrunners club. Over the past three summers, Daniel has done internships at a DoD Laboratory in San Antonio. He holds a government security clearance, and is familiar with laboratory tools and procedures. His positive attitude and track record of achievement prove him a worthy candidate for this award. I therefore strongly recommend Daniel for an SME Education Foundation Scholarship. Should you have any questions or concerns, please contact me. Sincerely, Li, Ang Graduate Student/PhD Candidate Department of Industrial and Systems Engineering Texas A&M University

January 14, 2013

Dear SME Education Foundation Scholarship Committee:

I have had the pleasure of knowing Daniel for the past five years, especially in my former positions as a FIRST faculty

leader and a sponsor of the Zeta Lambda Chapter of the National Homeschool Honor Society. Daniel is an extraordinarily

gifted leader and wholesome young man, and it is my privilege to offer him my highest recommendation for your

scholarship.

Daniel served as the president of the honor society and, as such, I have had the opportunity to observe his leadership and

service. He is consistently well-prepared and is a thorough, competent leader. He is highly esteemed by his peers (elected

to the presidency by unanimous vote) and encourages excellence in both character and service by modeling it himself.

Because the honor society focuses on community service, one of Daniel’s many responsibilities was to interface and

coordinate with the directors of various community programs. He was an excellent ambassador and representative of the

organization.

Four years ago as a FIRST faculty leader, I had the opportunity to observe Daniel as he led his robotics team to a

respectable 6th Place finish at the FIRST Tech Challenge World Championship. This doesn’t happen by accident. It takes

strong leadership and vision. As the team captain, Daniel’s dedication and effort produced a cohesive team which adapted

well to new challenges and remained focused on team goals. He was an effective leader because he valued his

teammates’ unique strengths and, rather than duplicating efforts, Daniel built an efficient team by unifying those

strengths. His effective communication of the team’s short and long term goals kept his team engaged throughout the

design and implementation phases. Clearly, his leadership was invaluable.

Lastly, I want to impart that Daniel has a heart for serving his community. He does so without compulsion, but rather

because he has a deep understanding that “much is expected of those to whom much is given.” His résumé lists his many

acts of service, but I want to highlight one service project, in particular, which will impact the next generation of scientists

and engineers. After placing in the FIRST Tech Challenge World Championship, his robotics team spearheaded the iTEC

Robotics Camp at the University of Texas at San Antonio, a summer program designed to reach and inspire young

students who might be at risk for underachievement in the fields of math and science. He performed over seventy hours

of student mentoring for this worthy program.

You will undoubtedly receive applications from many qualified applicants, so it is my hope that I have effectively

communicated the attributes of this exemplary young man. In my seventeen years as an educator, I have never met a

student more deserving than Daniel Chacko, and I confidently recommend this superior candidate for your consideration!

If I can be of further assistance, please let me know.

Sincerely,

Nancy Antcliff
