by Koramic company and, for the first time, the integral ”detiga” roof system, which is also installed directly on the roof structure. It consists of matching el-ements of energy-producing and purely insulating components, which togetherform an integrated end-to-end outer layer. The program comprises the active”solar thermal energy” and ”photovoltaics” modules and the passive ”insulation”component for all other roof areas.”Solar-PUR-Flush” technology maximises yieldThe polyurethane specialist exclusively displays solar thermal energy, photo-voltaics and combination modules with polyurethane (PUR) frames and fasten-ing elements. The Solar-PUR-Flush technology developed by BBG allows forencapsulating inserts, joints and electronic components in plastic frames, thusprotecting them against any mechanical damage and corrosion. The award-winning ”edgeless technology” provides for a smooth transition between theframe and the module without creating the edges in which dirt accumulates, thus maximising energy yield.TopTherm 90, the ultra-energy saving and slender standard windowWith TopTherm 90, the company showcases the world’s first ultra-energy savingstandard window with a frame and a profile core made of PUR. With a depth ofonly 90 mm and triple glazing, the window achieves a heat insulation value of0.8 W/m²K. The production technologies for system bar profiles were developedby BBG and are available for use in new innovative windows.Presentations on innovative solutionsWithin the framework of the ”glass technology live” special show, BBG represen-tatives will give two presentations to prospective customers in order to providedetailed insight into the innovations developed by BBG. Project manager Ger-hard Hörtrich will be talking about ”Efficient production technologies for windowsystems made of polyurethane” while Hans Brandner, BBG’s managing partner, will be focussing on ”Technologies for flexible PUR frames in solar modules, us-ing passive and active roof modules as an example”.BBG’s customers are active the world overBBG GmbH & Co. 16.08.2010 Elektrochrome Beschichtungen der neuen Generation

09/16/2010 Playing snooker with atoms

Scientists speak of sputtering when energy-rich ions hita solid object and cause atoms to be released from itssurface. The phenomenon can be exploited to apply mi-croscopically thin coatings to glass surfaces. A researchteam has developed a special sputtering technique thatgreatly increases the effi - ciency of the coating process. The new module for a sputtering plant will be shown atthe Glasstec 2010 trade fair in Düsseldorf from Septem-ber 28 to October 1 (Hall 14, Booth C41). Designed to bethe most spectacular concert hall in Germany, the construction of the Elbe Phil-harmonic Hall in Hamburg is a controversial project, but it is already creating asensation in the architectural world. Nobody has ever tried to build windows thishigh, each one fi ve meters tall, of unique dimensions, and glazed with multifunc-tional insulating glass. The demands on the architectural glass used in modernstructures like this are increasing all the time. Quite apart from their large surfacearea, they also have to offer outstanding optical characteristics and at the sametime a high quality of thermal and sound insulation. These qualities depend to alarge extent on their surface coating. And this has become a costly challenge.Researchers at the Fraunhofer Institute for Thin Film and Surface TechnologyIST in Braunschweig have developed a new module for a sputtering plant thatsignifi cantly increases the effi ciency of the coating process. Sputtering is thepreferred process for coating large surfaces. The process leads to an bombard-ment of a chosenmaterial (target) and causes its constituent atoms to be ejectedlike billiard balls by the impact of the energy-rich ions – generally noble-gas ions. The latter subsequently condense on the surface of the glass or other substrateto form a thin fi lm with specifi c properties depending on the characteristicsof the starting material. Different designs are possible for the coating module. The version that consists of two rotating tubes containing strong magnets is re-ferred to as a double magnetron. The magnets increase the sputtering rate, butseverely limit the options available to the design engineers: »We can only sput-ter materials for which targets are available and can be produced,« explains ISTdepartment head Dr. Bernd Szyszka. »Moreover, the sputtering process wehave been using up to now is ineffi cient, because only a fraction of the bom-barding ions actually contribute to the sputtering effect. More than 95 percentof their energy is lost in the water-cooling system.« The IST experts have over-come this obstacle by placing an additional fl at target made of a heavy elementsuch as bismuth behind each target tube. »This signifi cantly increases the sput-tering rate,« says Szyszka. The ionized noble gas causes bismuth atoms to be

released from the fl at solid body. These atoms are gradually »implanted«, asthe experts say, in the tube target. As the researcher confi rms, »The bismuthhas enabled us, for example, to signifi cantly improve the deposition of titaniumdioxide.« The quantity of coating material removed from the target is increased. The IST researchers have meanwhile scaled up this effect to industrial level.»Using a simulation program, we were able to optimize the sputtering processin terms of material deposition on the fl at and tube targets, even before we hadbuilt the new prototype model. We are now able to combine the target materialsin any way we desire, without causing unwanted chemical reactions on the sur-face.« The result is a higher deposition rate and a more homogenous surfacecoating based on new materials that previously could not be produced. It alsotakes less time to produce the coating, reducing the energy consumption. »Thenew coating technology has allowed us to replace three old magnetrons withtwo new ones. The system is much cheaper to operate and produces materialswith improved properties,« says Szyszka. The researchers will be present at theGlasstec fair in Düsseldorf from September 28 to October 1, presenting a widerange of applications from panoramic car roofs that provide thermal insulation tophotovoltaic cells with improved effi ciency. »This is the start of a new revolutionin large-area coatings,« promises the scientist. For further information: Dr. Bernd Szyszka l Phone +49 531 2155-641 [email protected] Fraunhofer Institute for Surface Engineeringand Thin Films IST, Braunschweig l www.ist.fraunhofer.de Editorial Notes: FranzMiller l Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft, München l Press Offi ce l Phone +49 89 1205-1333 l [email protected] Picture: The new coating module enables ISTresearchers to produce previously unattainable combinations of materials. 09/16/2010 Glass magic – a film that changes what glass can do

Fogged or frozen windows are the bane of drivers‘ livesin winter. Researchers have developed a process thatallows them to manufacture not just transparent, butheatable films. These films also prevent condensa-tion, ensuring ice cannot build up on the windscreenovernight – and, once and for all, consigning the icescraper to the trash can. A prototype of this kind of film can be seen at theglasstec trade fair due to be held in Düsseldorf from September 28 to October1. Drivers do not relish the winter: it is cold, driving on icy roads is no fun. Addedto which is poor visibility if the windows mist up, and the laborious morning ritualof having to scrape off the ice. Likewise, the winter poses its own problems foranyone with a greenhouse. The more condensation you have inside, the greaterthe threat to plants if the temperature falls below freezing. While heaters may be

glasstec – - DISCOVER THE WORLD OF GLASS /DISCOVER THE WORLD OF SOLAR PRODUCTIONwww.glasstec.de / www.solarpeq.de

a solution in many cases, a better option – especially concering energy costs –would be to ensure the problem does not arise in the fi rst place. And that meanspreventing condensation on windows. All of which would save a great deal ofhassle – and car owners can save the time they once spent scraping off the ice.Researchers at the Fraunhofer Institute for Surface Engineering and Thin FilmsIST in Braunschweig have now solved the problem by developing a process thatcan be used to manufacture transparent, conductive – and therefore heatable– films. Moreover, their surface films also provide another decisive advantage:the low emitting properties of the outer film ensure the window cools down muchmore slowly, preventing condensation. The window remains dry and ice-free.Films that up to now have been produced with tin oxide are both mechanicallyand optically still far from ideal. Cracks may form as a result of excessive tem-perature loads – a problem encountered during the glass bending process. Asa result, tin-oxide fi lms only have limited industrial applications. „Our new fi lmis extremely resilient“, says Dr. Bernd Szyszka from the Fraunhofer IST. „Tem-peratures up to 900 degrees Celsius are no problem, and even if you bend itaggressively – the fi lm remains intact.“ The coating can therefore also be usedin large industrial plants where transparent protective heaters are often requiredto monitor the process chain safely. What can the new film do that tin oxide can-not? „Our coating system is based on nanocrystalline indium tin oxide (ITO)“,says Szyszka. „This material doesn’t just have outstanding optical and electricalproperties; it is also mechanically and chemically much more stable than tin ox-ide.“ While the advantages of the ITO coating have been known for many years,it is only now – thanks to the Fraunhofer engineers – that these kinds of fi lmsystems can be manufactured industrially for a much larger range of applica-tions. The researchers are utilizing High Power Impulse Magnetron Sputteringtechnology, or HIPIMS. With magnetron sputtering, accelerated noble-gas ionsshoot atoms from an ITO plate, much like what happens with billiard balls. Theseatoms are deposited on the required substrate in vacuum. „Yet instead of 10 am-peres we use 1000 amperes with HIPIMS“, explains Szyszka. „We ionize thesputtered material; therefore the film is build up by higher energetic particlesand shows superior properties.“ All of which provide the engineers with a majoradvantage: depending on the pulse and power conditions during sputtering, theengineers can adjust the texture and morphology of the fi lm so that it subse-quently takes on the desired properties during a subsequent tempering process.„We can then bend the fi lm and even coat three-dimensional materials with thetechnology“, says the researcher. The HIPIMS process can also be conductedat room temperature, so that even temperature-sensitive plastics can be coated. The Fraunhofer IST researchers will be showcasing a prototype at glasstec (Hall14, Booth C 41), due to be held in Düsseldorf from September 28 to October 1.An ITO fi lm on a glass tube demonstrates the outstanding properties achieved. Not only is the fi lm easy to heat – without any of the annoying wires commonly

found in a rearheated window – the film boasts an optical transmission ratio ofover 80 percent. The coating is also corrosion- and scratch-resistant. It caneven provide scratch protection for float glass, a special type of flat glass. For further information: Dr. Bernd Szyszka l Phone +49 531 2155-641 [email protected] Fraunhofer Institute for Surface Engineeringand Thin Films IST, Braunschweig l www.ist.fraunhofer.de Editorial Notes: FranzMiller l Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft, München l Press Offi ce l Phone +49 89 1205-1333 l [email protected]: A transparent heatable film made out of indium tin oxide surrounds thisglass tube used by BASF. 09/16/2010 Glass biochips for medical engineering:resource-friendly, cost-effective and high-quality

The Fraunhofer Institute for Laser Technology ILT willbe showcasing an innovative In-volume Selective LaserEtching (ISLE) process for glass on the joint Fraunhoferstand C41 in hall 14 of this year’s glasstec, the flagshiptrade fair for the glass industry, which takes place in Düs-seldorf from September 28 to October 1, 2010. This pro-cess enables micrometer-fine structures to be created intransparent material like silica glass, borosilicate glass, sapphire and ruby. Trade visitors will be able to viewthese components under a light microscope on a video monitor at the fair.Biochips with microchannels measuring 100 micrometers in diameter, the samethickness as a strand of human hair, are used for quick tests in medical research. The channels in the small thin plates hold around a drop of fluid – blood in mostcases – which is analyzed with the aid of specialized medical equipment. Atpresent, biochips made out of plastic are used for this kind of application. How-ever, substances from the plastic can diffuse into the test fluid and distort testresults. Partners from the field of medical engineering are therefore increas-ingly asking for biochips made out of glass. These glass biochips are chemicallyneutral and essentially better suited for medical analysis applications than theirplastic counterparts. The only problem so far, however, has been the lack ofa suitable process for manufacturing microchannels in glass components. TheISLE process from Fraunhofer ILT now for the first time provides a manufac-turing process for microchannels, shaped holes and cuts in transparent glassmaterial. Selective laser-induced etching first involves irradiating the transpar-ent component internally with a laser at the point where a structure, a channelfor instance, will subsequently be created. It is important that the component

© 2010 Messe Düsseldorf GmbH 29

glasstec – - DISCOVER THE WORLD OF GLASS /DISCOVER THE WORLD OF SOLAR PRODUCTIONwww.glasstec.de / www.solarpeq.de

is also processed right up to the edge to ensure the channel has an entry andexit. At the irradiated points, the material now has a different structure than atthe untreated points. It exhibits 300-times higher etchability than the unexposedmaterial. The component is then immersed in a bath containing special, envi-ronmentally friendly etching fluid, enabling the exposed material to be etchedaway. Next, the component is cleaned, leaving behind the required geometry,in this case a fine system of channels. But this process can also be used to drillholes, to manufacture tiny pipes with a wall thickness of eight 8 micrometers andmeasuring one millimeter in both diameter and length, or to produce miniaturegears for the watchmaking industry. ”The greatest challenge is to avoid damag-ing the glass”, says Dr. Jens Gottmann, project manager at the Fraunhofer ILT.”The remelting in the glass produces stresses that cause the material to crackand make the component unusable. It’s all about finding the optimum irradiationparameters, something we are constantly working on.” Gottmann and his teamare qualifying the process for customized applications and offer their customersa microscanner with a suitable laser to produce the tailor-made geometry.Variation of complex geometries for prototypes The Jülich research center is de-lighted with the ISLE process, particularly for producing prototypes and short-runmanufacturing: The researchers there often need just a single component sam-ple to determine the best channel design within a biochip for medical purposes. In the past, a mask had to be produced specifically to manufacture these pro-totypes – time-consuming, costly preparatory work. The ISLE process supportsthe production of complex geometries even without a mask, making it easier tovary the geometry for fine-tuning.Potential for high-volume production The ISLE process could also be used infuture for high-volume production. Glass components have already been irradi-ated in the laboratory within a few seconds using a new high-power femtosecondlaser. Researchers from the Fraunhofer ILT are currently developing suitablemachine tools for high-volume production. Initial results show that the produc-tion of glass components is possible at costs similar to those for plastic com-ponents. The use of float glass instead of slightly less expensive plastic paysoff over the long term: The glass components boast higher quality and can bekept for longer than their plastic counterparts. Glass biochips, for instance, canbe cleaned far more effectively than plastic biochips, and can even be sterilizedin an oven. They can therefore be used several times, making them extremelyresource- and environmentally friendly.Apart from medical engineering, applications for the process also include pre-cision mechanics, especially watchmaking. In future it should be possible toproduce microstructured 3-D components, gears and even preassembled drivesfor instance, in glass. This application still requires further research, but at thesame time has the potential to generate substantial financial returns.

08/18/2010 Grenzebach - Cutting Process Optimization in FloatGlass Lines

Cutting Process Optimization in Float Glass LinesGrenzebach is a longstanding supplier and develop-ment partner to glass manufacturers in need of pro-cess equipment, automation technology, specializedcutting and handling systems as well as entire man-ufacturing lines and cold end equipment. Grenzebachalso engineers process technology and manufacturingequipment for the photovoltaic and solar thermal industries. For flat glass makers job-specific optimization and cutting plays a key role inmanaging the cold end of a glass processing line. In fact, this high art of opti-mization directly affects the achievable peak glass yield.A novel technical achievement (patent pending) strikes a new path to a signifi-cant yield increase in the float glass production business. The assessment and qualification of non-conformities in the glass ribbon in-evitably forces glass makers to score strips of faulty glass for elimination ascullet. So far the shortest possible “cullet sheet” measured some 600 mm asdetermined by the roller spacing of the downstream conveyors directing this cul-let sheet to the next available drop and elimination section. This minimum sheet length, seen over the full ribbon width, frequently embod-ied an avoidable glass loss especially when the particular glass defect situationwould allow a shorter cullet sheet. The Grenzebach innovation now allows to reduce this 600 mm sheet to a merecullet strip of up to 170 mm and, subject to the detected defects, to minimize theglass loss by up to 70 %.Traditionally, the snapping station snaps the scored sheets with the main snap-ping roller. The snapping station raises this pneumatically actuated or motor-driven roller pinpointed on the score passing the roller crest. In interaction withthe press roll assembly over the conveyor the glass snaps in a controlled waydue to flexure, sectioning the endless ribbon into individual sheets.Depending on the job requirements, these sheets then directly go to the stackersas jumbo sheets or are further cut up to smaller sized sheets. Faulty glass is tra-

ditionally snapped and conveyed to the next available cullet elimination point inthe very same way. However, the conventional float line roller spacing requiresa minimum 600 mm sheet for this. The now developed new snapping stationprovides a moveable roller section that can open and close within a very shorttime to create a discharge opening. This elimination sequence is initiated by theGrenzebach PPC optimization system and is then materialized by the conveyorline control system. The new snapping station can now snap and directly elim-inate a scheduled short cullet sheet through the roller segment opening. Aftercullet strip elimination the conveyor rollers return to their original position andresume their function as standard conveyor rollers for subsequent production. The newly developed snapping station design also reflects numerous customerdemands. The top pressure roll assembly is now, for example, driven by servo-motors and allows manifold roller position settings (leading or trailing offset oraccurate positioning over the glass ribbon). A novelty is the likewise integratedupper snap roll. If necessary, this extra snap roll can snap the cullet strip witha linear down-movement in a specific and adjustable angle of attack. This newfeature is to further improve the snapping results in particular situations such asfor thicker glass. An on-site operating terminal provides a variety of parameters for fine tuningthe machine performance. The Grenzebach PC-Panel visualization softwareallows for the display and editing of all machine parameters from any operatingterminal. The newly developed snapping station is already employed on running projectsand will soon prove its yield increasing capacities.Grenzebach is a global corporation with many years of experience in Flat GlassTechnology. Please visit us at Glasstec, Hall 15 Booth B42.Picture captions:The Picture shows the new reduced-length cullet strip snapping and on the spotelimination through the snapping station discharge opening.

VIG - a window with wall insulation properties !Insulating glass windows by double-glazing, bondingtwo glass panes with a gas-filled spacing, has been asuccess story for the last 50 years. However, in 2012the new European Energy Saving Regulation EnEV2012 will come into force, demanding thermal insula-tion values which traditional double glazing will be un-able to achieve. Not only our own regional authorities, but also the US Gov-ernment, have approved regulations which will herald the end of double glazingunits, as we know them, by 2013.

As a solution, windowmakers already offer the familiar triple pane window whichcan reduce energy loss below the new limit values. However, such heavy-weightinsulating glass panes with a thickness exceeding 3 cm over-complicate win-dow installation and place high demands on window frames and window fittings. Moreover, they add considerable weight to glass facades and are often a de-termining factor as to the viability of retrofitting existing buildings, for example. The use of krypton gas filling offers some improvement in triple pane design .However, cost and environmental considerations make this impracticable on alarge scale. The metal coating on the inner glass side, limiting thermal radiationto the outside or solar irradiation to the inside„ are only justified for cost opti-mization purposes. At best, this window pane can produce a U-value (formerlyK-value) of about 0.6, i.e. each square meter window surface just loses 0.6 wattper degree K of inside/outside temperature difference. This is a good result butstill represents twice the value of an insulated exterior wall. There is a better, visionary solution - VIG! This vacuum-insulated glass does notrequire an insulating gas between the inner and outer pane, but relies on a void– in reality - a vacuum. To prevent the atmospheric pressure from squeezing the2 panes together, barely visible tiny spacers are placed in between. These newwindow pane structures can theoretically achieve U-values of 0.2 and as suchmatch the efficiency of an excellently insulated exterior wall !Considering that the vacuum requires just a few tenths of a millimeter spacingbetween the panes, the slim VIG window is not half as thick and is overall lighterand more stable than current double or triple pane glazing. The two panes, squeezed under atmospheric pressure, and the spacers constitute a compositestructure making a glass pane thickness of just 2 mm possible, whilst achievingthe stability and sound insulation values of 4 mm glass. The use of the thermos flask principle for windows is not a new idea, the firstVIG patent in Germany being granted in 1906. Since then, numerous attemptshave been made, world-wide to bond both panes in a way that, on the one hand, allows a high 10-4 mbar inner vacuum to be maintained over a span of 20 yearsor more, and, on the other hand, ensuring that the strain generated betweenthe inner and outer pane does not result in glass breakage. A few successfulsolutions have merely satisfied a niche market as a substitute for single-glazedsmall windows in Asian housings. The demanding requirements of Westernworld markets however, have not been met - until now.In 2004 Grenzebach, an engineering company with headquarters in Asbach-Bäumenheim (Hamlar), in the Donau-Ries region of Bavaria, sponsored by theDepartment of Trade and Industry (BMWi) and assisted by the Project Manage-ment Organisation Jülich (PTJ), initiiated a new approach to this market demandand launched the ProVIG research project (#0327419). Grenzebach, already

an established manufacturer of glass processing equipment, gathered aroundsome suppliers, an insulating glass manufacturer and a window maker, andcompleted the project team with several Fraunhofer Institute affiliates and theZAE Bayern (Bavarian Center for Applied Energy Research).Bonding two glass sheets vacuum tight, not too rigidly while allowing durableflexibility, was a real challenge. Newmaterials had to be developed and new pro-cessing methods invented. Several thousands of tiny spacers had to be placedand accurately positioned between the two panes. Next, a vacuum needed tobe generated in the inner spacing. This vacuum had to remain free of any con-tamination or moisture even after 20 years, requiring a vacuum with a maximumof one millionth molecules in the air.Grenzebach now have a demonstration line in operation.for panes measuringabout 1 m x 1 m. The experience gained is already projected into full scale in-dustrial production with an annual capacity of 400,000 VIG. The aim is to offera VIG production line manufacturing panes of any desired size and able to with-stand demanding inspection cycles and tests. It must also be marketable at afair market price. The first 8.5 mm slim panes have an initial U-value of 0.5 and excellent noiseabsorbing properties. The spacers are so inconspicuous that at 1 m distancethey are only visible in a freshly cleaned window when they are pointed out. .The next generation with a mere overall thickness of 6.5 mm and still better Rvalues is already in process ...‘Glass-technology-live’ is a special show during glasstec 2010, in Düsseldorf, Itis an excellent stage on which to showcase the first VIG results in September2010. Product and process details will be presented in a gtl series of presenta-tions on 29 September in the afternoon. Throughout the period of the trade fairthe special ’Glass-technology-live’ show will serve as platform for our VIG ex-hibits and demonstrate how our windows will look in a few years from now. VIGwindow panes made of float glass and of tempered single-layer safety glass, measuring 1 m x 1 m, and even 1800 mm high VIG will be exhibited along withthe new VIG ISO window pane. This combined dual-pane glazing consists of aVIG and of a coated float glass pane. Achieving a U-value of 0.3 it is a world-beater in solar protection for such composite structures. Its R values alreadymatch those of an insulated exterior wall !More and more window makers and architects world wide are asking the ques-tion: When can we buy this VIG ? This demand redoubles the determination ofthe project team. Whereas inventors prefer step by step functionality optimiza-tion in a small scale line, Grenzebach insulation glass customers are impatientfor short-term annual production capacities producing millions of VIG sheets. This incentive has encouraged further co-operation between Grenzebach and

its partners with the aim of starting up, in a joint effort, such VIG production linesby 2012.It will be interesting to see if an equally visionary innovation will be introducedduring ‘glasstec 2012’!

ntermac’ s stand at Glasstec 2010 will occupy an areaof about 800 m2 and will be subdivided into differentdedicated spaces.Cutting: Intermac will display a Comby R-A37 line foralternate cutting of monolith and laminated glass. This is an ideal solution forglassworks that need to have two automatic lines, one for float glass and onefor laminated glass, but have a limited production surface area. With Comby itis possible to maintain the same productivity levels on the machines compos-ing the line, while obtaining a significant reduction in overall dimensions anda strong increase in productivity and process automation against a limited in-crease in the investment required. Two laminated glass cutting solutions willalso be presented: Genius 37 LM (semi-automatic) and Genius 37 LM-A (auto-matic). These machines have been designed to offer different customers a veryfast machining cycle and have the operator’s comfort at the centre of the project.Genius 37 CT RS is a cutting table for monolith glass intended for glassworkswith limited space available (also vertically during unloading of glass sheets) thatoffers the same level of technology as the famous Genius 37-61 CT tables.Waterjet: To represent the segment of water cutting systems this year, Inter-

Company News isophon glas GmbH

08/31/2010 “Market maturity for new laminated glass system withUg value of 0.3, burglar resistance P8B, bulletresistance BR7NS”

“trisophon” Product innovation from isophon glas GmbHresults in multi-layer glazing system with extreme impactresistance as well as a stunning Ug-value of 0.3 W/m2KThe leading producer of multi-layer glazing units in thesouth of Lower Saxony, Germany - isophon glas GmbH- announcesmarket maturity of a record-breaking, patentedmulti-layer glazing system with extraordinary features interms of impact resistance as well as insulation charac-teristics. The product which is available under the brandname “trisophon” has an Ug-value that can go as low as 0.3 W/m2K. The bur-glar resistance category goes up to P8B and bullet resistance class up to BR7NS(BR6NS+S and BR7NS+S are undergoing tests in the moment).isophon glas GmbH will be exhibiting trisophon at the glasstec 2010 in Düssel-dorf, Gernan from September 28. to October 1. Hall 10 Booth G45These stunning product properties are achieved with a revolutionary new com-bination technique where a polycarbonate sheet is integrated into the system asa floating panel. “The heavy laminated polycarbonate-glass systems availablein the past are simply not usable due to the very different material properties. They tend to show drastic aging effects after a very short period of time.” saysTorsten Bold, manager and technical director at isophon glas GmbH. Bold fur-ther: ”The floating integration of the polycarbonate in the window system hasbeen developed precisely in order to avoid these effects”. The integration ofthe polycarbonate without lamination to the glass also opens up possibilities forvarious new applications. The integrated polycarbonate sheet within the trisophon multi-layer glazing sys-tem prevents thermal energy dissipating to the outside, since the floating inte-gration of the elastic polycarbonate results in the kinetic energy being absorbednot only by a single tiny point of the material. In the trisophon system, kineticenergy is absorbed by the entire polycarbonate sheet. The trisophon multi-layerglazing system underlines isophon’s unique and resolute development of inno-vations. “Laminated glazing systems with this combination of extreme burglarresistance (P8B) and a Ug-Value of 0.3 W/m2K were simply not available up tonow”, says Bold. trisophon is not only extremely insulating and impact-resistant,it is also lightweight at 40 kg/m2 (in the P8B category with 3 layers) and thin, having a total thickness of only 36 mm. Burglar-resistant and bullet-proof glass

manufactured using conventional technology can easily be twice as heavy andconsiderably thicker.isophon glas GmbH is very happy to finally be able to present a product withthese outstanding properties. Public building specifications often called for lowUg-values in conjunction with high burglar resistance - a combination of require-ments which could hardly be fulfilled. Emergency exits with emergency openingdevice, for example, are required to prevent access to the building by shatter-ing the glass from the outside. The trisophon product family therefore makesmulti-layer glazing systems available which are both affordable and have a longservice life, as well as complying with the requirements on the construction ofpublic buildings. It has, for instance, already been granted an ift certificate (In-stitut für Fenstertechnik, i.e. German Window Technology Institute) authorizingit for use in resistance class WK3 (according to German standard DIN V EN V1627). Further certifications for international standards are planned.Further applications of trisophon are to be presented in the coming months. Theground-breaking properties in terms of insulation and impact resistance result-ing from the floating polycarbonate panel and the unique features of the differentpanel materials point the way towards various markets. The mix of different ma-terials in the trisophon product absorbs laser beams instead of reflecting them. This, in combination with the bullet resistance, opens up an entirely new usagein the sector of security technology for buildings. Knowing that the absorptionof laser beams already passively prevents voice interception, isophon and apartner company are currently developing a system additionally incorporatingartificial noise into the trisophon window system - this would then effectively ruleout the possibility of laser-based espionage.(4038 characters including blanks)About isophon glas GmbH isophon glas GmbH was founded in 1979 and is ahighly specialized manufacturer of glass systems. 09/21/2010 SOLAR CELLS ON FAÇADES Reliable protection onfaçades

PVB films for solar modules – Façade-integrated photovoltaics or “Building-integrated photovoltaics” (BIPV) making use of thin-film technology facilitate theefficient use of the building envelope, enabling it to generate electricity. How-ever, very few solar modules can make do without reliable and lasting protectionfrom external influences, particularly when attached to façades. Polyvinyl butyral(PVB), a film that has been better known until now for its use in laminated safetyglass, is now attracting attention. The market segment for solar modules integrated in façades or used as solarglass roof elements is steadily growing. Its market share is currently at lessthan 1 per cent of module installations, as many systems are still very costlyand building connection technology is still underdeveloped and not sufficientlystandardized. On PV modules, the solar cells have to be protected from external influences.Encapsulation consisting of transparent plastics is making a huge contributionhere to the durability of photovoltaic modules and to long-term power generationfrom sunlight. This applies particularly to building façades. With BIPV systems,it is not only possible to generate electricity and reduce CO2, but also to (at leastpartly) refinance the façade by feeding the electricity into the grid. These building-integrated PV systems are becoming increasingly attractive andefficient. They represent a good combination of efficient surface use and aes-thetics. A big help here has been the further development of PVmodules makinguse of thin-film technology. Of great importance here is polyvinyl butyral (PVB),a film that has so far been better known for its use in laminated safety glass.A fine example is the New York Stillwell Avenue subway station, which has theworld’s largest integrated PV installation with thin-film modules, equipped withTROSIFOL PVB films. The first manufacturer worldwide to develop a special PVB film for use in solarmodules was Kuraray Europe GmbH under the brand name of TROSIFOL, asthe company reports.Since the beginning of the Eighties, solar modules with TROSIFOL PVB filmshave been undergoing successful outdoor weathering tests on module teststands of Berlin’s Photovoltaic Institute and the Fraunhofer ISE in Freiburg, among others. Designed for all conventional PV module production processes,Kuraray introduced at the end of 2009 a second and technically improved gen-eration of films that supplements the current range of films in special fields of

application.Trend towards PVBSince 2005, there have been moves in the PV and glass industry to introducePVB film as the encapsulation material of double-glazing elements with inte-grated solar cells. The aim is to significantly improve the safety standards oflaminated module glass of building-integrated photovoltaics (BIPV).Furthermore, thin-film solar modules comprising two panes of glass with a PVBinterlayer can be inexpensively produced with the two-stage lamination processfamiliar from laminated safety glass. With the now appreciable and steadily growing demand for thin-film solar mod-ules – forecasts anticipate 40 per cent of total module output by 2020 – the useof PVB film will continue to increase and claim a growing share of the market. The reasons for the low market shares of other plastics include the lack of ex-perience with these products in the solar industry, their in some cases inferiortechnical properties and their excessively high cost. In addition, these materialshave to reliably demonstrate a service life of 20 to 25 years in solar modules.High safety standardsBuilding-integrated photovoltaics, particularly in Europe, are subject to the samehigh safety standards as all other glazing on façades and in overhead glazingapplications. For overhead applications in Germany, the list of standards and specificationsfor the construction industry calls for an interlayer of PVB. When these ele-ments are replaced with solar modules, these standards and specifications re-main unchanged. This means that EVA and other plastics in PV modules haveto overcome a number of regulatory hurdles in such applications. For building-integrated photovoltaics, experts are expecting strong growth in commercial useover the next ten years. The author Dr. Bernhard Kroll is employed in Technical Marketing at KurarayEurope GmbH in the TROSIFOL Division. www.trosifol.comPhotos: Same high standards of safety Façade-integrated PV systems are sub-ject to the same safety standards as all other glazing on façades or in overheadapplications.July 13, 2010We look forward to seeing you at the “glasstec 2010” in Düsseldorf: Hall 10,stand E36.TROSIFOL® is one of the leadingmanufacturers of PVB film for laminated safetyglass worldwide. motive and architectural glazing, special TROSIFOL films are used to encapsu-late solar cells with long term durability in the photovoltaic industry (PV). In 2004TROSIFOL was the first manufacturer worldwide to develop a special productline for PV applications based on polyvinyl butyral (PVB). Since then, modulemanufacturers have had a choice between module production in vacuum lami-nator or in the process with vacuum deairing and subsequent lamination in auto-claves. All major companies of the glass and the photovoltaic industry are part ofTROSIFOL’s customer base. The background material for all TROSIFOL filmsis Polyvinyl Butyral (PVB) that has been used as an interlayer in laminated safetyglass since the middle of the thirties of the 20. century. The experience gainedfrom the processing of this material since 1953, thanks to ongoing research anddevelopment, is one of the main reasons for technical leadership of TROSI-FOL as a manufacturer of films for structural glazing and TROSIFOL’s world-wide success. TROSIFOL operates its headquarters in Troisdorf, near Cologne(Germany) and an additional plant in Nishny Novgorod, Russia, both certifiedto ISO/TS 16949 and DIN EN ISO 9001:2000 standards. There are marketingsubsidiaries in the United States, Malaysia, India, China and Ukraine.Today TROSIFOL is a Division of Japan based chemical group Kuraray Co. Ltd(Tokyo) which is the world’s leading producer of polyvinyl alcohols (PVA), one ofthe initial products for polyvinyl butyral resins and raw material for TROSIFOLPVB film. Founded in 1926, the Kuraray Group with headquarters in Tokyo,Japan, is the world’s biggest producer of water-soluble synthetic polyvinyl al-cohols. In Europe, operating business, sales and production of chemical spe-cialties are handled by EVAL Europe in Antwerp, Belgium and Kuraray EuropeGmbH in Frankfurt (Germany). PVA is e.g. a crucial chemical product for theproduction of paper, textiles as well as for paints, printing inks, adhesives andceramics. Kuraray Europe GmbH has installed an integrated management sys-tem that satisfies the requirements of a quality management system conformingto DIN EN ISO 9001:2000 with the supplementary demands of the automotiveindustry ISO/TS 16949, an environmental management system conforming toDIN EN ISO 14001:2005 and an occupational safety and health managementsystem conforming to BS OHSAS (Occupational Health and Safety AssessmentSeries) 18001:2007. 09/21/2010 TROSIFOL highlights at glasstec 2010A self-luminous film, an improved acoustic productand photovoltaic applications for BIPV

LUMINEO TROSIFOL is launching another new, revolutionary product on themarket. A self-luminous PVB film by the name of LUMINEO, the new filmachieves its effect with a special formulation (European patent pending). De-veloped to European standards for safety glass, it can be combined with otherTROSIFOL films to modify the optical and acoustic properties. LUMINEO re-duces the need to install additional light sources in public areas for emergencysituations, e.g. power failures. LUMINEO meets the criteria of the German Listsof Construction Products “Deutsche Bauregellisten” of the DIBt (German Insti-tute of Construction Technology). At the fair stand in Düsseldorf, it will be themain attraction and, in a small LUMINEO environment, visitors will have the op-portunity to gain first-hand experience of the product.Improved sound insulation with TROSIFOL SOUND CONTROL (SC+) Afteryears of success with its SOUND CONTROL (SC) film, TROSIFOL is also pre-senting an improved product at this year’s glasstec. This is a multi-layer film thatsurpasses the accustomed high standards of safety and outstanding sound pro-tection properties of the existing TROSIFOL SC film. The new film has been spe-cially developed for the production of jumbo-size high-performance laminatedsafety glass with a width of 3.21 m. It is precisely here that the new SC+ film isemployed to best effect by measurably improving efficiency in production. In addition, depending on the structure of the associated ISO glazing, soundinsulation values of up to 50 dB can be achieved. It goes without saying that thenew film can be combined with other PVB films from the TROSIFOL range.BIPV with TROSIFOL SOLAR TROSIFOL is staying busy in the fast-growingphotovoltaic market and, more specifically, in the BIPV sector. Building-Integrated Photovoltaics covers the whole spectrum of solar power generationon façades. Encapsulation materials made of transparent plastics make an im-portant contribution to the longevity of photovoltaic modules and to the long-termproduction of electricity from sunlight. These BIPV systems are becoming in-creasingly attractive and cost-effective each year and sensibly combine efficientsurface use and aesthetics. The world’s first manufacturer to develop a special PVB film for use in solarmodules was Kuraray Europe GmbH under the TROSIFOL brand name. Sincethe Eighties, solar modules with TROSIFOL PVB films have been undergoing
