It Starts With Scouts!

Scouting was an activity that my whole family could participate in. There was something for everyone to do on the same night. It wasn’t just one person doing & everyone else watching. What started as interesting & frankly, convenient, has been an incredibly rewarding experience for my whole family. I have watched my children and many other children grow into amazing young adults. Lord Baden Powell started this youth movement to develop future leaders by using the outdoors as a classroom through fun & adventure. Come and join us on Scouts Canada’s Canadian Path - a path to adventure & leadership for all!

PERSONAL EQUIPMENT At the Cub age, they are starting to need some gear. Here are some great gift ideas. Most items are available at the scout shop, but check with us first, as we can give you some guidance on what you should be looking for and where to shop.

Scoutstracker We use a program database to track the cubs progress. It is an amazing program that allows you to sign up for activities, keeps track of dues, and tracks their progress throughout all of their Scouting Adventures. Each parent will receive a login and will be able to see the schedule, sign up for events, and enter badge achievements for the scouters to review, then award. When you receive your login via email, follow the link and create a password. Please ensure that you “OPT IN” to the emails as these come from your scouters. You can login anytime from www.scoutstracker.ca and choose CUBS.

Need to know:

All of the CUBS form a WOLF CUB PACK . They will meet regularly at the DEN. The Scouters will divide the PACK into LAIRS (smaller working groups or teams). In addition, the CUBS will be identified by age and be given different WOGGLES with WHISKERS to indicate whether they are a RUNNER, TRACKER or HOWLER. The SCOUTERS will be given forest names by the CUBS and that will become what the CUBS call them. Please help your CUB by using these terms. Check out www.scoutinglife.ca/canadianpath's parent section for more information.

• Drop Off/Pick Up — parents MUST COME IN to drop off AND pickup their Cub. We use these opportunities to communicate any newinformation to parents. In addition - your child’s safety is a priority. Weare not permitted to send them home with anyone other than you ortheir emergency contact unless you have made prior arrangements withyour section scouters. For security reasons, the school keeps the doorslocked at all times. If you are late, you will need to call a leader, so theycan open a door for you. Please try to be prompt to pickup your Cub at8:00, our scouters have their own children to get home and put to bed.

• Arrival Time —our leaders need time to set up. Please do not arriveearlier than 6:20.

• Communication: Your main line of communication is through yoursection scouters. They will be emailing you soon so you have theircontact info. Our main form of communication is email. We are a largegroup and it is impossible to phone/text each parent and youth. Pleaseensure that your contact information is correct in the myscouts database. Please ensure that you provided us with an email that you check often.Scouts Canada does not give out email addresses We do have a groupemail: [email protected] and periodically you will get all sectioninformation sent out from there.

• Attendance - we know that not everyone can make every meeting - butif you are unable to attend, please send your section scouter a text oremail - it helps us know who we should wait for if necessary.

Need each week:• Dues: $1.00 - The purpose of the dues is to start to teach the youth about

responsibility and money. For this reason, we do not do prepaid dues for the year/month. The money is used to offset snacks, crafts or treats. Please help your Cubremember it each week.

• Indoor Shoes: non-marking indoor shoes are required in the gymnasium! Absolutelyno outside shoes should be worn past the foyer - including adults please. We are veryfortunate to be able to utilize the schools & gyms - we currently do not have anyfacility fees - but we need to do our part to keep it clean! For safety reasons we askthat your youth have appropriate footwear to run in the gym (socks are veryslippery.... they may have to sit out during an active game if they do not have shoes)

• Uniform: The Cub uniform is a shirt, which you purchased, and a necker (scarf) and awoggle which we will give new Cubs at the Investiture ceremony. Please wear themto each meeting unless told otherwise. The necker is the same for all sections and youonly get one. We will be charging a $15 deposit on the neckers this year. If you wouldlike to return the necker when you leave the group, you can have your full depositback if in good condition. If you lose your necker, replacements can be purchased for$15. Replacement woggles are $2.50. It is important to sew the badges on as soon aspossible, so they don’t get lost and the Cubs can be proud of their accomplishments.Program badges have a place on the uniform. There are also participation badges thatare for a campfire blanket if they have one. We have handed out a badge placementdiagram, and will email out a link to the same shortly. We recommend sewing thebadges as glues/adhesives do not come off when you remove the badges. If thebadges are glued on, it may affect the ability to resell the used uniform in the future. We may buy back used uniforms.

• Water bottles: Please have your Cub bring a leak proof water bottle each week. Theyget thirsty, especially playing active games and it is very disruptive and timeconsuming to have them leave the gymnasium to go to the fountain.

• Come ready to play: It is helpful if you remind your Cub to use the washroom beforecoming to the meetings. It is amazing how much time children can spend in abathroom.

• Appropriate Outdoor Clothing: Cubs will usually start their meeting outdoors witha game or activity. It is very important that they come dressed for the weather forevery meeting. Please ensure that you send the appropriate jacket, snow pants, boots, mitts and toque as the weather gets colder.

• Program Map: New last year was our program maps. These replace the cub scouthandbook. They should bring these each week. A great idea is to have a recyclableshopping bag, your old Beaver bucket or a little backpack to keep all of your cub scoutstuff together to bring.

• DO NOT BRING: Toys, electronics, etc. - these things are quite distracting and tendto cause disagreements. Please leave these at home unless you are showing somethingfor a badge requirement.

• DO NOT BRING: Food, snacks - we may have several food allergies, so we ask thatyou do not bring food or snacks with you
