Until the 1980s, most Shanghai-nese lived in houses rarely higher
than two storeys. Often more than one family lived in one house and a single family might have as many as four generations living together. In some cases density levels were as high as
two-to-four square meters per person.

"China's using a very inexpensive labor force. They're buying the best of the best in extrusion machines and assembly equipment, and they're not buying into robotics at all -- because that's very expensive and it takes a lot of know-how to run those robots.
There's a lot of programming and expertise that they didn't have. But they had a workforce of 1.3 billion people so they just bought the best hardware that they could buy and then used the labor force for the as-sembly and production." Edward Burtynsky, photographer

PERFORMATIVE ACCUMULATION REFERS TO GROUP BEHAVIOR OF AN AGGREGATION OF VERTICAL INDUSTRIAL FACTORIES. THE VERTICAL FACTORIES MAXIMIZE PRODUCTION WHILE MINIMIZING FOOT-PRINT. THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN HORIZONTAL DISTRIBUTION AND VERTICAL PRODUCTION IS MANIFEST IN THE TRANSITIONAL SKIN ELEMENT WHOOSE STRIATED SURFACE ALLOWS FOR A TROPIC RESPONSE. THE RESULT IS AN INTELLIGENT SYSTEM THAT REACTS TO THE DYNAMIC DEMANDS IN CLIMATE AND VISUAL ENVIRONMENT. WHEN NOT IN RESPONSE TO THESE PARAMETERS, THE EXTE-RIOR ENVELOPE FALLS BACK INTO A STATE OF RELAXATION. THE CONTINUOUS KINETIC NATURE OF THE FACADE ALLOWS IT POSITION AS AN ICONIC ELEMENT IN THE LANDSCAPE TO RECEDE BEHIND ITS REFLEXIVE FUNCTION.
THE MAT THROUGH WHICH THE VERTICAL FACTORIES PROTRUDES IS A VARREGATED POROSITY THAT ATTEMPTS TO ACUTELY CHANNEL THE DISTRIBUTION REQUIREMENTS OF THE FACTORIES AS WELL AS PROVIDE A PUBLIC INTERACTIVE SPACE THAT ALLOWS NEIGHBORHOOD INFILTRATION.

PERFORMATIVE DIRECTIVE FROM SLIME MOLD AGGREGATION AND PRODUCTION
INDIVIDUAL MOLD CELLS RELEASE A PHEROMONE THAT IN TURN INFORMS CELLS TO AGREGATE AND FURTHER RELEASE THEIR OWN PHEROMONE. THIS CAUSES A UNIQUE AGGREGATION AND CLUSTERING OF CELLS IN ORDER TO PERFORM A TASK NO SINGLE CELL COULD PERFORM.
THIS PERFORMATIVE LOGIC IS USED TO AGGREGATE THE VERTIAL PRODUCTION TOWERS ON THE SITE USING THE SYSTEM OF DISTRIBUTION AS ITS SET OF LIMIITING PARAMETERS.

The facade is a reactive system that enables the building to respond to different climatic and visual conditions. The skin is composed of ETFE inflatable panels that have within them a pneumatic piston. This piston can extend beyond the boundary of the facade in order to release a FINE MIST. This mist creates a micro climate within and surrounding the building. Small mechanical pores imbedded in the lattice structure open when the mist is released in order to allow transmission of cool air into the building. The mist also affords the building a degree of visual seperation from the sun.

A pneumatic facade piston with short actuating travel, comprising a skirt and a pneumatic piston that are rigidly connected and slideably mounted in a sealed casing to delimit a low-pressure chamber and a variable-pressure chamber and a three-way valve arrangement that is controlled by a control rod connected at a first end to a brake pedal. The three-way valve arrangement having first and second valve seats and a valve that is applied to at least one of the first and second valve seats by a valve spring. The second valve seat being borne by a first longitudinal end of a plunger distributor while the first valve seat is borne by a first longitudinal end of a bushing slideably mounted in a sealed manner in the pneumatic piston over a defined first travel and beyond the defined travel the bushing is secured axially to the pneumatic piston.
