B.1 INTRODUCTION
Air-Ins Inc. laboratories was retained by Unicel Architectural to test a skylight with
reference (and not according to) to the condensation resistance testing procedure outlined
in the CAN/CSA A440-00 Standard, as this type of product is not covered by this standard.
The scope of the CSA A440-00 Standard is intended for vertical installation in buildings
only. However, the global temperature Index (I-value) that can be obtained should be
perceived as a close approximation. This is because all the main requirements of this
standard such as: thermal conditions, data collection and calculations rules are respected.
Obviously, the testing setup has been adapted according to the particular geometry of the
sample. The sample components and manufacturing are documented in section 3.0 of this
report.
B.2 TESTING PROCEDURE
Description of testing
This type of thermal test consists of sealing the sample in a test unit with hot and cold
chambers. Thermocouples are installed on specific locations on the surface of the sample
as defined by the testing procedure. These thermocouples allow obtaining the temperature
distribution on the interior surface. A system composed of fans, heating, cooling and
controlling allowed obtaining testing conditions maintained in permanent rate of flow for
the required period. The illustration on the next page shows the set-up used for the
condensation resistance test.
Requirements of the CSA-A440-00 Standard
The room side temperature (Th) shall be maintained at 20 ± 1°C and the weather side
temperature (Tc) shall be maintained at –30 ± 1°C.
The pressure difference across the sample must be near zero ± 5 Pa when measured at
mid-height of the sample.

Once the temperature stability is reached, the sample is maintained at this temperature for
five hours. After the five-hour period, 5 consecutive temperature readings are taken at 10-
minute intervals, for a total data collection period of 50 minutes. There shall be no
temperature difference between any two readings exceeding 1°C at each location.
The interior face of the frame sample shall be aligned with the interior face of the panel
that contains the sample. See note (1) below for deviation from this requirement.
The global temperature index "I" which characterizes the performance of the sample is the
smaller value between the glass temperature Index "Ig" and the frame temperature Index
"If" on the entire sample.
Note (1): The skylight geometry doesn’t allow aligning the interface of the room
side with each section of the skylight

warm side of the sample. Note that two glazing options were simultaneously tested; one
side of the skylight had Thermo 1" glazing installed (option no. 1) and the opposite side
had Vision Control 2-1/2" glazing installed (option no. 2)
