This is a very exciting time for Dartington. The continued development of our artist residency programme (p11), means that audiences will have opportunities to see work in progress, hear new music before it’s recorded, and even see world premieres before artists go on tour. This season we hope you can join us to be one of the first to see PuppetCraft’s new show for families developed at Dartington (p5), listen to The Convergence Quartet midway through their time in the studios here (p8), or be there for the world premiere of Floating Messages and Fading Frequencies in the Great Hall (p9).In addition to the events in this brochure, the both exciting, but unpredictable nature of the creative process during residencies means that there may be further things to see and do, so do keep an eye on our website or sign up to our free e-newsletter (p14) to get the latest information available.Danielle Rose, Live Art Producer

Graduate Showcase South West Music School

Following on from its debut success last year, the graduate showcase is a popular addition to the annual Totnes Festival programme. The event is both an opportunity for this year’s South West Music School graduating students to perform to you before they progress to Higher Education and careers in professional music, and a celebration of their achievements to date.

The concert will feature a collection of solos ranging from SWMS singer/songwriters’ own original compositions, to well known classical works.

Shoot 2011The 6th Annual Totnes Short Film Festival brings the best in local, up - and - coming film making talent to the Barn Cinema.

An opportunity to see some of the best short films made in or inspired by Devon and Cornwall. Last year’s top entry, as voted for by the audience, went on to screen for a week in front of My Afternoons with Marguerite in the main Barn programme.

Power of PlacePower of Place is a project celebrating the cultural legacy of Dartington Hall School 1926 – 1987, curated and conceived by artist and former-Dartingtonian Alice Leach to mark the school’s 85th anniversary and to showcase the wealth of talent from ex-staff and pupils of the School.

ART EXHIBITION The Gallery, Dartington – FREEPieces from The Dartington Hall Trust’s collection will be exhibited with work held privately by ex-Dartingtonians. The exhibition brings together work by a group of practicing artists having the school in common, who were part of an extraordinary set-up that was sadly brought to an end by the outbreak of war.

PHOTO INSTALLATION Aller Park, Dartington Adults £3.50, Students & U16s FREEOpen for the first time since 1998, the former school at Aller Park will be the site of an exhibition of black and white photographs from the archives documenting the life of the school by Fritz Henle and Bryan Heseltine and later photographs by Steve Hoare. A soundscape by Aune Head Arts will provide an eerie sound backdrop for visitors.

ROUNDHOUSE CAFE EXHIBITION Barn Theatre, Dartington – FREEA contemporary look at latter day artists from the school with an installation of original postcards for sale. Intended to be secret, the artist signs the postcard on the back so the buyer doesn’t know whose artwork it is until the card is turned over. dartington.org/arts/power-of-place

How the first story came to be toldA myth from Africa retold by Gcina Mhlophe

It all started so long ago that it is impossible to remember when.

One day a woman, called Mazanendaba, set out to search for stories. She hunted up and down mountains and through thick bush, asking the help of friendly and fierce animals, until wise Elephant told her where to find the secret of wondrous tales to tell.

A tale told with African and English words and song, wood and wire puppets and the sweet sounds of music played on traditional African instruments by Chartwell Dutiro.

Recommended age: 4+ // Duration: 50mins

Hot from their recent Mercury Prize nomination for third album The English Riviera, pop sensation Metronomy come to Dartington for a night of belting, unashamed electric pop.

Latest release The English Riviera, is a gorgeous record full of languid, sunset funk songs and even more danceable than its predecessor, which looks set to propel Metronomy to the next stage of their journey.

Metronomy is Dartington raised Joseph Mount on vocals, keyboards and guitar, Anna Prior on drums, Oscar Cash on saxophone, backing vocals and keyboards and Gbenga Adelekan on bass guitar and vocals.

A Little Patch of Ground is a performance and food-growing project delivered by nationally acclaimed arts organisation Encounters.

This multimedia performance presented by the participants is the culmination of a cross-fertilisation of ideas, stories and experiences telling an intimate tale about what it’s like to live now at this time of ecological challenge and opportunity. Since May, a group of local residents aged 7 – 82 have been meeting weekly on the Dartington Hall Estate to grow and share food, and use drama, writing and photography to explore their relationship with each other, where they live and the natural world.

The UK locks up more of its population than any developed nation except the USA, yet our reoffending rates remain higher than the rest of Europe. Are Britons worse behaved, is our prison system failing, or are we locking up the wrong people? Experts including Tony Corcoran (Governor of Channings Wood Prison) and Juliet Lyon CBE (CEO of the Prison Reform Trust) will debate these issues and address your questions.

The Convergence Quartet – Taylor Ho Bynum (cornet), Harris Eisenstadt (drums), Alexander Hawkins (piano), and Dominic Lash (double bass) – brings together four leaders of a generation of composer-improvisers who draw on both North American and European traditions in their music.

All established bandleaders in their own right, the bandmember’s credits also include work with many seminal names in contemporary jazz: Anthony Braxton, John Butcher, Joe McPhee, Louis Moholo-Moholo, Evan Parker, Sam Rivers, and Cecil Taylor, to name only a few.

They come together to offer a ‘powerful example of 21st-century musical catholicity’ (John Fordham, The Guardian) and ‘moments of magical innovation’ (Paul Medley, The Oxford Times).

New York composer-performer Annie Gosfield finds the warmth in mechanical, musical, industrial and signal noise, with a sophisticated and captivating use of sampled sounds. This landmark show features the premiere of her major new work, Floating Messages and Fading Frequencies, based on secret radio transmissions between British Intelligence and the Resistance movements in the Second World War. Karsten Fundal’s new suite to the Danish Resistance film Flame & Citron,and Annie’s signature ‘industrial’ piece EWA7, round off the programme.

Sleeping BirdBridget McCrumOn display until November outside the Welcome Centre, Sleeping Bird is by renowned sculptor Bridget McCrum who lives and works near Dittisham, Devon. It is made from Kilkenny stone and weighs nearly 2 tonnes.

Space is a Dartington initiative that extends our 80 year history of supporting artists from diverse backgrounds to develop new work.

The Space Residency programme is honoured to host choreographer Wayne McGregor with his company Wayne McGregor | Random Dance in residence from 30 August – 3 September. The company will be creating a new choreographic work ‘UNDANCE’ which will feature a new score by Mark-Anthony Turnage and a visual world created by Turner Prize-winning visual artist Mark Wallinger. UNDANCE will premiere at Sadler’s Wells this December in a two part evening alongside a new staging of Turnage’s emotional chamber opera Twice Through The Heart (1997), in which Wayne McGregor will direct Sarah Connolly in the role of a woman who is jailed for killing her abusive husband. Collection of 20th Century Visual Art Dartington is home to a substantial collection of 20th century art, collected in the main by Leonard and Dorothy Elmhirst. The collection reflects many of the artists who lived on the estate, such as David and Bernard Leach, Cecil Collins, Mark Tobey and Marianne de Trey.New on display outside Studios 3 & 4 in Space is a small exhibition featuring works by Hein Heckroth, Cecil and Elisabeth Collins, and Sigurd Leeder that gives a flavour of some of the artists who have worked at Dartington.

Craft Education at Dartington A number of specialist art & craft makers are based on the estate, including Mary Bartlett and Michael Honnor, who run book-binding and print-making classes respectively, open to all levels of experience. For more info call 01803 847000.
