Problem Statement

Problem: Stale beans due to the long period of

time between roasting and brewing Separate coffee making components

further increases length of overall process and consumer inconvenience

Proposed Solution: Create system to shorten time from fresh

beans to coffee 2 of 16

Coffee System Objective

Objective: To integrate and modify off-the-shelf

components through use of hardware programming

Deliverable: Create a 3-in-1 coffee system controlled

by Arduino microcontroller

Coffee System Overview

1. Beans are roasted for 4 minutes, then poured into grinder after sitting for 24 hours2a. Roasted beans are then ground for 10 seconds; ground beans are then shot into French press2b. The water heater heats the water, dispenses it into the French press3. The water and ground beans sit in French press for four minutes before grounds are separated from newly brewed coffee4. Coffee is poured out of French press through the spigot, and into a cup 5 of 16

Roaster

Input: Fresh green coffee beans

Process: The roaster is mechanized using a pulley system powered by a motor that: Output: Uses a spool to pull down

the top of the roaster until the beans are poured in to the grinder

Goes in reverse to unwind the spool, and return the roaster to its original state

Grinder and Water Heater

Input: Roasted beans Process: Grinds beans

coarsely Output: Grounds shoot

into French press through pipe

Input: water Process: Heats water

with use of bubble valve

Output: Pours water into French press through tube

French Press

Inputs: water and coffee grounds

Process: Coffee grounds and water

sit together for 4 minutes Plunger pulley system

activated by DC motor and separates grounds from water

Summary & Conclusions

Mechanically integrated and modified an off-the-shelf popcorn popper, grinder, coffee maker and French press Hardware programming was not

successful Limit switches were not utilized due to

technical difficulty in implementing them in the circuit and design layout
