Figure 2.1 Perceptual Process
2-8
We receive external
stimuli through our five senses
exposure
Exposure occurs when a stimulus comes within range of someone’s sensory receptors
Attention is the extent to which processing activity is devoted to a particular stimulus

Interpretation
Interpretation refers to the meaning we assign to sensory stimuli.
Illusion
Illusions are “figures which appear to be other than they really are”.
Types of illusions
Ambiguous Figures Distortions Fictions Paradox
An ambiguous figure is a figure that can be interpreted in more than one way, so the brain is not sure what to make of it.
Ambiguous Figures
We use information about distance to help us decide how big or small something is.
Distortions
Fictions
These illusions cause us to see things that are not true.
A paradox is something that may appear ridiculous but is actually true. These illusions are also called impossible figures because they are impossible. If you tried to make these into real (3D) objects you would not be able to.
