The Ottery Civic Association has vowed to fight the approval of any further liquor li- cences for bars or clubs in the area. Association chairperson Ismail Jefferies says Ottery already has at least five venues selling alcohol, which they believe have caused an increase in drunk driving and prostitution in the area. Jefferies, who is also a member of the Ot- tery Neighbourhood Watch, says many Ot- tery residents are unhappy about the number of liquor retailers in the area and they will object to new applications. “We are not too happy about it. We have made a decision that we will try to object to all of the new (liquor licence) applications in our area to keep our area dry,” says Jeffries. “Obviously we cannot do much about the existing ones because those were (issued) be- fore the liquor licence applications process in which the community could contribute. We are saying, irrespective of the fact that clubs exist (with a liquor licence) it does not mean new clubs can be granted licences on that ba- sis.” Fuzion Latino Cafe Lounge is one of the most recent clubs to get a liquor licence ap- proved in January. In operation in Ottery for about five years, the club has relocated to Gorlay Road about two years ago. Raybin Windvogel, acting presiding officer of the Western Cape Liquor Licensing Tribu- nal, says the application was made in Febru- ary last year and approved in December. Windvogel says three important factors were “considered when approving the appli- cation”. “The applicant is a known and seemingly respected businessman and had previous ex- perience in the entertainment industry, hav- ing managed another club for some two years,” says Windvogel. “The premises are located in a business centre. There had been a licensed restaurant on the premises before.” Windvogel says no objections were re- ceived for the application, and the presence of other liquor retailers in the area is not tak- en into account during the application proc- ess. Nigel Heldsinger, the owner of Fuzion, says he doesn’t believe his club has increased drunk driving in the area. “We have a a cab service that’s affiliated to Fuzion called Classic Cabs. We are opposed to drunk driving,” says Heldsinger. “We say if you have had a bit too much, then you can utilise that service. We basically pay for that service for our patrons. “You can’t have people driving drunk and killing themselves on the road. When people leave my place I always encourage them to use the cab service. It costs me a bit of a for- tune, but I do that.” Heldsinger adds the previous occupants of the premises Fuzion now occupies had a liq- uor licence for 16 years. He says he moved to the new location be- cause it is in an industrial area. The houses closest to Fuzion is some 50m away in Enslin Road. Jeffries says while many of the bars in Ot- tery are located in industrial areas, the busi- ness area is not separated from the residen- tial areas. “It is an industrial area, but we have a street that is separating the industrial area from the residential area. So there is no boundary that you can say is creating a barri- er between the residential and the industrial areas,” says Jeffries. “Even though the clubs are in an industrial area we have primary schools nearby. Batts- wood Primary is less than 1,5km away from the area.” The Reverend Douglas Bell, of St Timothy’s Church, in Ottery says the number of bars and pubs in the area could also increase ad- diction to alcohol. The church has run an addiction counsel- ling service, called Alcohol Victorious, for 12 years. Bell says many families in Ottery have been affected by alcohol addiction. “My understanding is that they want to put another pub in the area and the off-sales is just down the road from us. There are enough drinking spots. Do we still have to accommo- date another drinking spot?” says Bell. “The point is if you know there’s a problem in your country you don’t want to issue more guns. Why must there be more? Is there not enough already? The church is conscious of the adverse effect alcohol has on people and we are trying to help.” Anyone interested in using the services of Alcohol Victorious can contact the church on 0(021) 762 4863. Muscling in on media coverageMuscling in on media coverageDear reader,
We’re spoilt for news, with two Armstrongsdominating the headlines.
Neil Armstrong, who with fellow astronautEdwin “Buzz” Aldrin Junior became the firstman to set foot on the moon in 1969, has diedat age 82.
Neil’s first words on stepping on the lunarsurface, were: “That’s one small step for man,one giant leap for mankind” – a powerful mes-sage, apt for the 20th century’s most amazingfeat and one that will resonate as testimonyto man’s ability.
The other Armstrong in the news is fallencycling icon Lance whose career has taken agigantic step back as he now faces being
stripped of his seven Tour deFrance titles.
Without pointing fingers, onewonders just how many athletesuse performance-enhancingdrugs.
The muscle mass on competitorsin the recent Olympic Games waspainful to look at, especially onsome of the women athletes. I as-cribed it to disciplined, rigoroustraining and high protein intake, while finding it highly unnatural.
On the assumption that most – if not all –athletes use steroids, would that not thenequal the playing field, give everyone thesame advantage?
To start with, you’d have to be excellent atyour given sport; whether naturally inclinedor as a result of years of training.
Don’t get me wrong; I’m not endorsing druguse in any way, merely considering all the an-
gles. Though no relation to theArmstrongs, but also getting gener-ous media attention close to home,is the hippopotamus who abscond-ed from Rondevlei Nature Reservetwo weeks ago. The latest news isthat the young hippo, who can nat-urally lay claim to mass, albeit fat,has been spotted helping himself toa bit of lawn in Zeekoevlei.
(I nearly ended up editing theabove paragraph out when a col-
league stepped into my office to ask mewhether I’d heard that the hippo haddrowned – thankfully not true).
I digress... What are the chances of lookingout of your window in suburban Cape Townto see a hippo grazing in your garden?
All very dramatic and exciting, but disgust-ing is the fact that the young hippo escapedfrom the reserve with his mother and siblingbecause the fencing that keeps them safely
enclosed had been stolen.I’m anti-violence but in this instance wish
the thieves had gotten theirs from the hippofamily.

City employee bustin Copperhead raidLUZUKO ZINI
A CITY of Cape Town employee alongwith twoother suspectswerearrested forpossession of stolen goods in Lotus Riverlast week.
TheCity of CapeTown’sMetals Theft Unit, also known as Copperheads, arrested thesuspects after receiving a tip-off on Wednes-day night.Head of the Metals Theft Unit, Neil
Arendse says the suspectswere caught in theact.“Whenwereceived the tip-off officerswent
to the house and found three men strippingcables in the yard. When officers knocked atthe gate they were told the owner of thehouse is not home. When officers got insidethe premises they found about 100 metres ofstripped aluminium cable already in bun-dles and also about 20metres of insulated ca-ble,” he says.“Officers also found the owner of the prop-
erty hiding under a large nylon bag in thecorner of the yard.”
Arendse says everyone is equal when itcomes to the law and thanked the public fortheir assistance.“The arrest of a City employee further
proves that the City shows no favour in itspursuit of justice. The assistance of the com-munity was invaluable in this instance andwe thank them for their continued support,”he says.In a separate incident, police arrested one
person and are on the hunt for two othermenafter a ATM was vandalised in Ottery lastweek.Provincial police spokesperson Lieuten-
ant Colonel Andrè Traut says the incidenttook place at a supermarket in Ottery.“At about 02:00 on Wednesday morning,

We are what we are, where we livePEOPLE often ask me why weshould fuss about the environ-ment. What about the other se-rious issues we face – poverty, hunger, HIV and Aids, gang-sters, and the rest of the litanyof dailywoes?Howcan the envi-ronment even feature in theface of all this trouble andstrife?
As an answer I like to share howI saw the world when I was young.
At school we used to practice writing let-ters, with the address all nicely lined up. Itall seemed a bit pointless.
So to keepmy letters short I had an addressthat ran halfway down the page, that ransomething like this; Number 354, Cape ViewFlats, 29 Narrow Road, Wynberg, Cape Prov-ince, The Republic of South Africa, SouthernAfrica, Southern Hemisphere, Africa, TheEarth, 3rd Planet from the Sun, the solar sys-tem, located at the edge of the MilkyWay spi-ral galaxy, part of the Virgo supercluster, space, the Universe, everywhere.
This helpedme to locatemyselfin the universe, here at the bot-tom of Africa on a little, blueplanet. It reminds me where weare, on a planetary spaceship.
This spaceship Earth hurtlesaround the centre of our galaxy–which consists of at least anoth-er 200 000 suns, and probably asimilar number of planets – at abit over half amillion kilometresan hour. Yet we read this articleas if we are sitting still!
What ismy point? Simple: Amid this speed, this chaos and order, as far as we know thisplanet is the only one which is habitable byus and the billions of other organisms withwhich we share it.
Fact is we have not identified even half ofthose other organisms. Yet we are responsi-ble for the extinction of hundreds of species, every day, some before we even discoverthem! Extinct means gone. Forever.
We do this by wastefully consuming the re-sources – the fossil fuels, minerals, water, an-imals, plants, fish that make up our world.
Instead of taking care of our world we havebecome distracted by an artificial world ofbling, drugs, shopping, stuff.
Whatever turns us on. Our minds havebeen hijacked by a machine that eats ourworld and makes us worry about all thewrong things. Yet we are privileged to livenow, in this time.
Weknowmore about ourworld thanpeopleever have before.
We are starting to really understand aboutthe universe, the atoms that make it up andeverything in between.
We are Homosapiens – thinking people. And just as we create our own problems, weare equally capable of providing the solu-tions. If – and this is a big if –we are to surviveas a species, we have to learn to care for theplanet which provides our home. From thefirst unicellular organism to us, this planethasnurturedus for billions of years.Whetherone believes in a god, or not, our world re-mains a wondrous thing.
No matter how bad things look in our liveswe must remember that our environment iswhere we live.
It is our house, our neighbourhood. It is ourcity, ourmountains, our rivers andair. It pro-vides our food, shelter, water, air and every-thing we need to live.
It filters our poisons, our waste. It shieldsus from gamma rays and does stuff way be-yond Superman.
Caring for our world, our environmentshifts us beyond our daily grind. Examiningwhere we live means examining ourselvesand what we each are. We can only begin tofix what is wrong with our world by payingclose attention to exactlywhat ails each of us.
I look forward to sharing a journey thatwillexamine how we can collectively make thechanges we need to see in and on our world, our environment.
After all, our environment is wherewe are. Each of us. Now.Earth Pulse is a monthly column by
freelance writer, researcher, author andeditor, Glenn Ashton, a Noordhoek resi-dent who is also a columnist for the SouthAfricanCivil Society Information Serviceand the South African Journal of NaturalMedicine.

Beware baby hippo BilboLUZUKO ZINI
ATWO-year-oldhippohas lost itswayaftertrying to return to its pod.
Bilbo, the hippo, managed to move out fromRondevlei into the StrandfonteinBirdingAreaand later into Zeekoevlei.
It is believed Bilbo moved out through anopen fence gap. The 300 metre section of fenc-ing was stolen from the False Bay Nature Re-serve earlier this year. Bilbowas spotted earlyFriday morning in Lotus River.
The City Of Cape Town’s biodiversity man-ager, Julia Wood says residents near the vleior Lotus River should not try to capture Bilbo.
“People should not try to approach, chase, throw anything or even shoot the hippo. Awounded hippo can be dangerous and chargeon sight, and may very well injure or kill youor an innocent bystander,” she says.
Wood says hippos are active at night.“Hippos usually stay in thewater during the
day and move out to graze at night,” she says.Residents in Lotus River and near the vlei
need to be cautious because the hippo is mov-ing into residents’ gardens and nearby roads.”
Wood explains how Bilbo got lost.“A female hippo fromRondevlei that had re-
cently givenbirth in the smallwetlands in Zee-koevleimoved out of the fenced area into a dis-used pan of the Strandfontein Birding Area
with her young calf. An older calf was follow-ing the hippo and joined her in the pans,” shesays.
The older calf, Bilbo, remained behind in theStrandfontein Birding Area and did not followthe mother back into Rondevlei.”
Woods also hopes their plan of trying to getBilbo back home will work.
“Funnels have been built into the fence sothat the animal canmove back into Rondevlei. We hope the hippo can go back into Rondevleivia these funnels. However, because the ani-mal is moving into the nearby suburbs atnight, Reserve management are now discuss-ing a way forward and perhaps active cap-ture,” she says.

THE V-PLAN UPDATE
As most of our V-Plan customers were made aware of, since a statement was made by one of the local tabloids that our company wasderegistered during the month of May 2012 and was therefore trading illegally.
Let met put the record straight. Our company, the South African Funeral Trust, home of the V-Plan, was over many years re-insured by acertain company through their funeral administrators, when the news broke that we as a company, are trading illegally. We were equally caughtby surprise and astonishment, just as our clients were. After some digging into our re-insurance payment schedules, we discovered to ourhorror that monies that were supposed to be paid directly to the insurers, were without our permission and knowledge paid into someunknown banking accounts.
After a lot of consultation with various re-insurance entities, we finally got to a point where we are now linked to a reputable company, and ourloyal customers could now be assured of the best of service and of course being legally registered. The V-Plan severed all ties with theprevious administrators.
The V-Plan is a registered member of I.E. Administrators CC, underwritten by Safrican Co. Ltd, with immediate effect.

Traffic law headacheLUZUKO ZINI
PROVINCIAL transport offi-cials are literally putting thebrakes on a man’s onlysource of income.
Dabchick Road residentLawrence Matji says he doesnot know why the provincialDepartment of Transport hasdeemed his way of survival asillegal.
“I have a trailer that I con-structed myself and use it tocollect wood and glass off-cuts.I use the materials to makepieces of artwork to sell. I alsoused tomakekitchenunits andwardrobes and the trailerhelped carry the materials Ineed,” he says
Matji believes he is not doing anything il-legal and he is just trying to make a living.
“This is my way of keeping my head abovewater. I sell my artwork so that I can havesomething to eat and yet the law stops mefromusing the trailer on the road as they sayit is ‘not recognised’,” he says.
According to Matji, he approached thetraffic department to enquire about gettinga license for his trailer and he was referredto the provincial Department of Transport.
“I approached the traffic department andthey toldme they could not help and referredme to the transport department. I made aphone call to the department and explainedmy situation. The lady on the line told methat the legislation of this country does notallow licenses to be issued for such trailers,”he says.
Siphesihle Dube, provincial Departmentof Transport and Public Works spokesper-son explains what type of trailers are recog-nised by the law.
“In terms of Section 1 of the National Road
Traffic Act, the definition of a trailer meansa motor vehicle which is not self-propelledand which is designed or adapted to bedrawn by a motor vehicle,” he says.
Matjie says he is being treated unfairly.“While the lawpreventsme fromusingmy
trailer on the road, there are a lot of horsecarts on the road and I am sure they not sup-pose to be there,” he says
Dube says horse-drawn carts are not sup-pose to be on the roads either.
“Horse carts arenot recognisedasvehiclesas they do not fit the definition of a vehicleor a trailer,” he says.
Dube further explains the process of get-ting a licence for a recognised trailer.
“Theowner of a trailerhas to apply at theirappropriate registering authority for the li-censing of a trailer. The trailer must also bepresented to a vehicle testing station for cer-tification of roadworthiness (CRW), becausethe trailer will not be issued with a licencedisc if itwasnot presented forCRW.A trailermaynot be operated onapublic roadwithouta licence disc,” he says.

New Auris to be launched soonNew Auris to be launched soonWHEELS24
THEToyotaAuris has just goneon sale in Japan, but will makeits global debut at the Paris au-to show in September.
It is a car, Toyota says, that willbe better styled, have higherequipment levels and also “becheaper to run”.
The all-new Auris has a sexynew exterior design and a cabinthat is said to have higher qualityfinishes than the model it replac-es.
The latest Toyota has also adop-ted the new family face – seen inthe design of the 86 sports coupe, just launched in South Africa –with its narrower grille, sharp-ened light clusters and LED day-time running lights.
At the rear the new Auris has atailgate that opens wider, a wrap-around light cluster and a boldnew bumper design.
The interior is bigger – there’sextra knee room and more spacein theboot – but oneofToyota’s bigtalking points is Skyview, said tobe “one of the largest panoramicroofs in the segment”.
Toyota is also said to have paidattention to other elements of thecabin through its use of lights, col-ours and finishes. Satin silver fin-ishes are used for the air vent andmetre surrounds, centre consoleand transmission tunnel, whilemodels (depending on the spec lev-el) will have either fabric or leath-er trim to go with other “soft-touch” materials throughout the
interior.Luggage space is 360 litres
across the range – the battery packbeneath the hybrid versions rearseat has been repositioned to giveit the same load capacity as its sib-lings.
Driving dynamics have alsobeen improved; the overall rideheight is 55mm less than the cur-rent model, resulting in a lowerdriving position and centre ofgravity. The Auris’ aerodynamicdrag coefficient is Cd 0.28.
It also weighs less – up to 40kg,depending on the version – but thegreater use of high tensile steelhas also contributed to a 10% in-crease in the Auris’ body stiffness.
Powertrains available in Eu-rope include 1.4-litre diesel and
1.6-litre petrol engines along witha full hybrid version.
The all-new Auris will belaunched in South Africa in early2013. More detail specific to the lo-cal models will become availablethen.
BLUEBEAS: The newToyotaAuris will be launch in SouthAfrica next year.

Nissan SA weighsDatsun returnWHEELS24
NISSAN is considering rolling out itsDatsun brand in Africa to better com-pete with Indian and Chinese rivalsfor lower-income consumers.
This planned roll-out is according to asenior executive.Nissan, which also announced plans to
spend more than R1-billion on doublingits South African production capacityover the next few years, sees the fast-growing continent as an increasingly im-portant market. But winning market share among Afri-
ca’s cost-conscious new middle class re-quires a cheap entry-level vehicle.Toshiyuki Shiga told reporters at a
briefing at the company’s plant in Ross-lyn, outside Pretoria: “TheKoreanmanu-facturers, the Indians and Chinese aremore aggressive in emerging markets.“In order to penetrate frontier, growing
markets like the Africanmarket, we needa product.”Shiga says the companywas “consider-
ing” rolling out the Datsun in Africa, but
that nothing had been decided. Both India’s Tata Motors and China’s
Geely, which are also targeting Africa, aremore experienced in low-incomemar-kets than Nissan or its Japanese rivals, including Toyota. In South Africa, Nissan’s Micra sells
from about R110 000, compared withGeely’s entry-level LC that costs aroundR95 000.Nissan this year announced plans to re-
vive theDatsun brand in Indonesia, Indiaand Russia, to target first-time buyers inemerging markets. The company ditched the Datsun name
in 1981 to consolidate all cars under theNissan brand.Datsun, which helped symbolise the
rise of Japan’s auto industry after WorldWar 2, is still awell-knownmarque in sev-eral markets, including North America.Nissan currently produces around
90 000 cars a year in Africa, with about50 000 in South Africa. It plans to spend more than R1-billion
to double the South African capacity by2016, says Mike Whitfield, Nissan’s man-aging director in South Africa.
COMEBACK?Nissan SA isconsideringbringing backits popularDatsun brand.

LOGISTICS and transport group Imperialsays it has delivered “outstanding” re-sults for the 2012 financial year ending inJune 2012.
CEO Hubert Brody says: “The groupachieved outstanding full-year results withstrong revenue and profit growth across thebusinesses.”The business reported it had an excellent
year in Germany, while the South African di-vision performed satisfactorily, despitetough trading conditions.Distributorships, automotive retail and fi-
nancial service businesses all performedwell. However, the tourism business experi-enced challenging trading conditions and theused car market was sluggish.
“We outperformed a strong new vehiclemarket with a good product supply and excel-lent positioning of our key brands,” Brodysays.Newvehicle unit sales grew19%, compared
to the market growth of 13%.Imperial’s strategy of adding parts, compo-nents and industrial equipment businesses
offered resilience andmade a significant con-tribution to group revenue, he adds.“The group remains focused on generating
strong returns on capital,” he says.Brody says Imperial would look to expand
its logistics businesses, especially into therest of Africa as trading conditions in thesouthern African division were expected toremain difficult. The fundamentals of themarketwere good,
Brody adds, as customers outsourcedmore oftheir goods to logistics specialists.

Modificationsfor new Golf 7WHEELS24
VOLKSWAGEN has released a few moretentative details of its next Golf 7, as itprepares to reveal thepopularhatchbackat the Paris auto show.
The next-generation Golf will be the sec-ond car, after the new Audi A3, to be builton theVolkswagenGroup’s newMQBmodu-lar platform. It is expected to underpinmorethan 40 small and mid-sized models acrossthe group’s brands.According to Automotive News, the new
Golfwill be up to 110kg lighter than its prede-cessor thanks to the use of stronger steel tocut down on the metal content. It will also show reductions in fuel con-
sumption up to 23%, the automaker says.Volkswagen also expects the use of the
shared platform to cut manufacturing timeby30%andproductioncosts by 20%andwill,reportedly, channel the savings to pay forupgrading the car’s entertainment systems.Ulrich Hackenberg, the company’s brand
development chief, said at the press briefingin Wolfsburg, Germany: “The Golf has apreeminent role at Volkswagen because ofits high production volumes, the number ofemployees behind it, and because the car isthe face of VW.” The internet has been inun-datedwith spy shots of thehigh-performancederivatives of the newGolf, but details of theParis show debutante remain few.The next-generation Golf will make its de-
but at the Paris auto show, starting Thurs-day 27 September, although a sneak previewis expected on Tuesday 4 September. TheGolf 7will be launched in SouthAfrica in thefirst quarter of 2013.

The dark side of clever car technologyWHEELS24
INTEL’S McAfee unit, best known forsoftware that fights PC viruses, is one ofa handful of firms looking to protect thedozens of tiny computers and electroniccommunications systems built into eve-ry modern car.It is scary business.Security experts say automakers have
so far failed to adequately protect thesesystems, leaving them vulnerable tohacks by attackers looking to steal cars, eavesdrop on conversations, or evenharm passengers by causing vehicles tocrash.John Bumgarner, chief technology of-
ficer of the US Cyber Consequences Unit,anNPO that helps companies analyse thepotential for targeted computer attackson their networks and products, says:“You can definitely kill people.”To date there have been no reports of
violent attacks on vehicles using a com-puter virus, according to SAE Interna-tional, an association of more than128 000 technical professionals workingin the aerospace and the auto industries.Jack Pokrzywa, SAE’s manager of
ground vehicle standards, says: “Any cy-ber security breach carries certain risk.SAE Vehicle Electrical System SecurityCommittee is working hard to developspecifications which will reduce thatrisk in the vehicle area.”
The group of US computer scientistsfrom California andWashington state is-sued a second report in 2011 that identi-fied ways in which computer worms andTrojans could be delivered to automo-biles – via onboard diagnostics systems, wireless connections and even taintedCDs played on radios systems.Toyota, the world’s biggest automaker,
says it is not aware of any hacking inci-dents on its cars.Toyota spokesperson John Hanson
says: “They’re basically designed tochange coding constantly. I won’t say it’simpossible to hack, but it’s pretty close.”Bruce Snell, a McAfee executive who
oversees his company’s research on carsecurity, says automakers were fairlyconcerned about the potential cyber at-tacks because of the frightening reper-cussions.“If your laptop crashes you’ll have a
bad day, but if your car crashes thatcould be life threatening,” he says.“I don’t thinkpeopleneed topanicnow.
But the future is really scary.”Cars are already considered “comput-
ers on wheels” by security experts. They are filledwith dozens of tiny com-
puters known as electronic control unitsthat require tens of millions of lines ofcomputer code tomanage interconnectedsystems including engines, brakes andnavigation as well as lighting, ventila-tion and entertainment.

The retailer has come out denying these re-ports, saying they are not retrenching as thisis “not a formal retrenchment exercise”.
But for the three percent of employees whohave yet to sign on the dotted line, it may verywell come to the option of leaving with a vol-untary severance payment or taking early re-tirement, should they qualify.
Woolworths has explained its position. Thecompany runs a seven-days-a-week opera-tion, 365 days a year.
Already 97 % of Woolworths employees hadstarted working under the new contract.
It requires them to work flexible hours, in-cluding weekends.
By comparison, the old contract requiredstaff to work a fixed shift from Monday to Fri-day, and a half-day on Saturday.
Woolworths COO, Sam Ngumeni, says thecompany will offer staff who opt for the flexi-ble contract a “conversion payment”.
As for those who don’t, does this mean theywill, in fact, be without a job?
At what stage should the government inter-vene to prevent working people from losingtheir jobs in the private sector?
South African companies have used labourlegislation at their disposal to revisit employ-ee contracts. One of these are “operationalcriteria”.
The demands on the retail industry arefuelled by every person who uses these servic-es at odd hours and over weekends.
South African companies could considerbeing more flexible in their own approach tostaff.
Every time consumers frequent malls andstores, someone has to be there to do the work.Consumers may have a better understandingof the dynamics involved when it is their ownworking these inflexible hours.
Trip made Women’s Month specialTHIS is to express my thanks and appreciationfor being selected to go on the sightseeing busand the Table Mountain cable car on Wednesday22 August. I thoroughly enjoyed the experience, forming part of such a friendly group of women.
In the end it felt as though we had known eachother all our lives!
Thank you, People’s Post, for making thisyear’s Women’s Month something extra specialfor me. The outing was an unforgettable experi-ence. Be sure also to thank Ebteshaamah andher assistants who accompanied us on the tripto ensure a smooth-running event.EVELYN SCOUT
What an amazing experienceI JUST want to say a heartfelt thank you to Peo-ple’s Post for the Women’s Day city tour and out-ing to Table Mountain on Wednesday 22 August. It was very well planned and I really liked howthe winners were selected from all differentwalks of life. Some of the ladies who were cho-sen hadn’t even been up Table Mountain before! We were also presented with a lovely goody bagand a snack on Table Mountain which made usfeel really special!
Also a big thanks to Ebteshaamah who wasvery professional and managed to successfullycoordinate a big group of ladies. A job very welldone to her!
Thanks, too, to William and the bus driverfrom CitySightseeing. I felt like a tourist in myown hometown and certainly learnt a thing ortwo about our beautiful city.
Overall an amazing experience!FATIMA TAR MAHOMED
Organ donors: who gets the benefit?I AM not against organ donation per se, but Ihave strong reservations on the fairness of theenterprise.
If one donates blood, a discount situation isapplied when one or one’s family requiresblood.
If one donates their organs, the family receivenothing but the receiver pays K-rand into themedical fraternity to receive the organ. Appar-ently a healthy donor dying can make six or sev-
en once-off donations.Am I wrong to expect compensation in kind
for the donor’s loved ones – should they be inthis unenviable position in the future?
Not all receivers revere and nurture theirnew organs, so what is the motivation for nor-mal, average people to allow the harvesting oftheir bodies?LLOYD ANDERSONMuizenberg
Help theathletesTHE biggest sporting showpiece ofthis world played off on an islandcalled England and ran for 16 days.
It was described by most as thegreatest Olympic Games ever. Ihave a propensity to agree, but onlybecause I have a Dstv package thatallowed me to watch most of thesporting disciplines that athletesfrom all walks of life could competein.
The Games had come and gone;our gold medal winners will be re-membered for a few more weeks be-fore life returns to normal for all ofthem. Now our athletes were of-fered a heap of money for winningmedals. Athletes who formed partof a team had to split the money be-tween that particular team mem-bers. I am not sure if our athleteswill be taxed on their winnings, butif they had decent sponsors itshould make a big difference totheir monthly salary, or so I think.
Winning a gold medal at theGames would certainly attract a lotof interest from would-be sponsorsand could definitely boost the in-come of these athletes. For athletesfrom America, Russia, Britain andother countries there are many ap-pearances and endorsement dealsthat generally follow a gold medalwinner. I sincerely hope this is thecase for our local boys and girls aswell. It is time the government andthose who pull the strings when itcomes to money matters in the de-velopment segment of all sportcodes risk it all by investing in ourathletes. All we need is proper re-sources and management.DEEN DANIELS

fight with heavy hitting, heavy hands and itshould be an explosive contest.”The first event was hosted at the Bellville
Velodrome on Saturday 4 February.According to Barrett, he founded the event
because the ever-growing list of talentedMMA fighters in Cape Town was starved forcompetition.“A lot of the Cape fighters had to travel to
Johannesburg or Durban to get fights andwhen you’re an amateur it’s not always thateasy to pack your bags and pay your way togo to events,” says Barrett.“There are events happening around the
country. When you’re pro you get paid to dothis. They pay for your flight, they pay youraccommodation andwhen you’re an amateurthat doesn’t happen.”The organisers plan to host league events
four times each year in the future. Barrettadds that the eventhas started to attract fight-ers from other parts of the country.“We started it to give the guys a chance to
compete at a professional level in Cape Townrather than going around the country.”The smaller venue in Wynberg should
make for better seating arrangements, closerviews of the fights and a more vivid experi-ence on the night. For more information about the league or
to buy tickets, contact Barrett on 2 [email protected] or 0 072 123 4404.

AN OCEAN VIEW teen jetted off to Cana-da on Sunday to represent SouthAfrica attheBeachVolleyball JuniorWorldCham-pionships.
Christin Delcarme has been playing thesport since she was 11 years old and she willreach the pinnacle of her fledging career to-morrow when the championships begin. The Ocean View High Grade 12 pupil says
she got into the sport because of an olderfriend whom she admired.“I enjoy volleyball because it is the sport
for me. I love the sport because I knew onegirl who played it and was my role model
when I was small,” says Delcarme.“She played volleyball very well. She first
lived near me and now she lives in LavenderHill. She was a South African player.”Delcarme may have started playing the
sport because of a friend’s influence, but hernatural ability came to the fore almost imme-diately.She represented South Africa for the first
time as a 13-year-old and this will be her fifthtime representing the national squad at anylevel.“This is the fifth time I’m being selected for
South Africa. I feel good about it and I’mproud of myself because I was first selectedfor the South African team when I was 13years old.”
She adds that although her training regi-men can be time consuming and tiring, herpassion for the sport makes it easier.“I’m good at volleyball because I train very
hard every day.“I also take the train to Camps Bay about
three times a week to train there. I have beendoing it since I was 13 years old so I am usedto it already.” she says.Delcarme started playing the sport at
Kleinberg Primary School and now plays forthe Ocean View Volleyball Club. The 17-year-old spends most of her time
playing the indoor version of the sport, whichsees teams of six play on an indoor court. But at the championships she will be play-
ing beach volleyball, which involves teams of
two playing on sand.Delcarme believes that switching to the
outdoor version of the game is a challenge shecan overcome.“It is a little bit difficult switching to beach
volleyball because I am used to playing in-door volleyball,” says Delcarme.“Iwant to finish first. I think that’s possible
becausewe trainedhard, butwewill seewhathappens there.”Delcarme says her dream is to one day par-
ticipate in the the Olympics and says her de-termination and passion for the sport will gether there. The Beach Volleyball Junior World Cham-
pionships will run from tomorrow until nextweek Tuesday.

FORMER Santos FC captain Edries Bur-ton believes the club’s relegation fromthe Premier Soccer League has not di-minished the reputation of the EngenKnockout Challenge.
Burton, now the club’s Chief OperationsOfficer, spent his entire 17-year professionalcareer at the Lansdowne-based team beforehanging up his boots tomove to the businessside of football in 2007.
Santos, who are also sponsored by Engen, have been the host club for the Challengesince its inception in 2003 and as COO Bur-ton is directly involved in running theevent, of which People’s Post is the mediasponsor.
The former centre-back says the numberof entries to this year’s knockout proves thatneither Santos nor the competition’s reputa-tion have been tarnished.
“Santos is a brand on its own. It is a brandin Cape Town, it is a brand in South Africaandwe have played in Africa as well. Santoswill always be a brand, regardless of which
league we are playing in,” says Burton.“This year we can look at the number of
teams that have entered for the play offs. Weare talking about 80 – if notmore. So it showsthe pedigree of the tournament and that eve-ryone wants to participate in the KnockoutChallenge.”
The opening rounds of the Knockoutkicked off at the StephenReagan sports com-plex in Westridge this week, with 96 under-17 teams all looking to secure their passageto the next round.
Only 16 teams can make it to the tourna-ment final next month to fight for the Chal-lenge crown and walk away with up toR10 000 in prize money.
Since the tournament’s inception thestandard of competition and the profession-al organisation has seen several playersprogress to the professional ranks of SouthAfrican and European football.
DaylonClaasen, who plies his trade at Bel-gian side Lierse, and Ajax Amsterdam at-tacker Thulani Serero are two high-profileexamples.
Although Burton admits the Challengecannot claim all the credit for producing
players of this stature, he believes the tour-nament certainly played an important partin their development.
“Everybody wants to acknowledge theirtournament to be the one that’s unearthingthe players, but one has to look at the biggerpicture,” says Burton.
“Weare all involved indeveloping playersand the Engen Knockout Challenge is justone stepping stone in the growth of the play-ers.”
Santos and several other professionalclubs have benefited from the talent beingdeveloped by the Engen Knockout.
Burton believes what the club gives to thepeople of Cape Town, especially the football-ers, is more important than what it does forprofessional clubs.
“We always want to ensure we do our bitfor the development of football. I don’t thinkit is about what Santos can get out of thetournament; it is more what Santos can dofor the broader community,” says Burton.
“And if we expose our young players tothese tournaments and competitionswewillreach the benefits of them playing at a high-er level.”
