The imbizo was aimed at addressing, among others, gangsterism and police service delivery. It was held at the Unit- ing Reformed Church, in Lavender Hill. Major General Peter Jacobs high- lighted the poor turnout when he asked police officers in the audience to raise their hands. Most of the audience com- prised of police officers, with only about 30 residents. Jacobs said it was a travesty to see “the same faces at the meeting”, but added that “we know the problems and need to rather find solutions we can im- plement together”. He said the community and police need to develop partnerships and joint- ly fight crime to build peace. A previous meeting highlighted the urgency to dismantle organised crime, but Jacobs says this would be a long- term challenge which the police would not be able to execute in a few weeks. “I would like to know why gangs cre- ate such fear among people when many of them grew up among the peo- ple of this community who are trying to curb the crime? “Another thing which confuses me is that people don’t want to give informa- tion to the police about crimes because they have the idea that they will be forced to testify, when this isn’t always the case. “I understand that people are scared to come forward because they look at incidents like the one where a witness was murdered because two gang members were sentenced to 27 years imprisonment, but all we need are small tip-offs and the investigative unit will take care of the rest.” The People’s Post reported on the in- cident Jacobs referred to (“Witness killed in ‘gang hit’”, 3 April, 2012). Llewellyn Jordaan, a resident, com- mended the police on their work, but pointed out the need for the Tactical Re- sponse Team (TRT) to remain visible in the area. Jordaan says: “They made a dent that is evident, but the team shouldn’t be withdrawn even when it is quiet.” He said the TRT were specialists who “needed to consistently make criminals’ lives miserable”. Jacobs says plans are afoot to have the TRT operate permanently in Laven- der Hill. Aysha Davids, founder of Women Hope for the Nation, had praise for the police, while recognising they worked with limited resources. Residents identified sport as an alter- native medium to crime. Jacobs agreed, saying that it is a good way to build peace. “We need to take charge and replace organised crime with or- ganised sports, but this doesn’t include the Sunday leagues where drug deal- ers are in control. “There used to be so many good soc- cer teams in Lavender Hill, but where are they now? And many good swim- mers come from the area, but why is there no life saving club?” Ward 68 councillor, Marita Petersen, says: “Together we can do more, but we need to take back the fields in the area as well because the gangs use them freely, even though it is council property and you need to apply to use the space. “We must build positive partnerships and work with one mindset because if we are divided, we will get nowhere.” Jacobs says leaders and roleplayers are also needed to build trust, facilitate change and eradicate the illegal ele- ment. He also raised the point of residents questioning why the police did not shoot back at gangsters. Jacobs says that such action would “have killed more people and we cannot lower our- selves to the gangs’ level because (then) we would be murderers as well”. “Residents should be aware that sometimes the shootings are ‘magnets’ to draw the police away from something else that is happening.” He said the aim was to get rid of ille- gal weapons and ammunition, adding that gangsters wanting to do the right thing often did so by approaching their priest, saying they would hand in their weapons under condition there would be no investigation. “We cannot compromise,” Jacobs says. “We have to do the investigation because we cannot talk to gang mem- bers unless it is through an investiga- tion.” A follow-up meeting is scheduled to discuss sporting alternatives with resi- dents, police and council. A date has yet to be set for this meeting. Pictures, page 8. Dear reader,
Excelling in the sales arena in today’s highlychallenging economic times, is a tall order. A dou-ble-dip recession has seen many busi-nesses fold and crippled others to with-in a whisker of extinction.
Millions of over-indebted South Afri-cans have had to place themselves un-der debt review. Given this context,People’s Post is very proud of our ad-vertising representatives Sheryl Hauptand Michelle Poggenpoel, who on Fri-day scooped awards (see page 1) forsales success at the WP NewspapersRepresentative of the Year ceremony.Retaining clients versus establishedcompetition can only be as a result ofdelivering consistent quality service;applying innovative sales strategy.
On the topic of business, I attended Islamic Re-lief South Africa’s inaugural business breakfastlast week and was heartened by the strong entre-preneurial spirit that exists in our communities. Iwas inspired by the determination and honestywith which small businessmen and women keepgoing; not dependent on formal employment, andat the fountain of talent.
I had a taste of entrepreneurship during my free-lance and self-employed years between journal-ism. I sold everything; from clothing and food to
loo paper and a transport service. I know how diffi-cult it is to bring home a few rands, let alone hun-dreds and thousands.
One of my clients, who had not paid several ofhis suppliers, eventually hadto face the music for his un-ethical dealings. I was one ofa few whom he had owed ze-ro, because I stood up to himand demanded cash everytime my vehicle transportedhis supplies.
You have to be tough inbusiness, especially whenyou’re self-employed andhave no protection other thanyour instinct. You bag theprofits; so too the risk. Youcannot undersell yourself;factor in your labour, time, pet-
rol costs, electricity, phone bill and every otherrunning expense, before setting a price that’s toolow. It must be worth your while; you’re in it forthe money!
On a lighter note, I’ve started running. After 17years, I’ve overcome my fear of running, all thanksto the Lion of Africa/Itheko Sport Athletic Club’shead coach Farouk Meyer. Coach extraordinaire,Farouk took me, my colleague Edwin Scott andabout a dozen other novice runners on the roadand up the hill last week, literally.
None of us would have believed at the outsetof our run that we could complete a 5km run com-plete with a steep hill. I made some friends alongthe way. Like me, some of the other women wereanxious about running. I had images of collapsingalong the road and having to be embarrassinglycarried back to base camp.
I’ve always been a runner, until I was told bythe coach of a walk/run programme that I’m awalker. And that’s what I believed, but no longer.
It’s early days yet, but my challenge is clear:train for the next six weeks to complete a 10kmrun in the Jive Slave Route Challenge on 27 May.The club caters for beginners to elite runners andtrains twice a week at Rhodes High School inMowbray, meeting at 18:00 on Tuesday or Thurs-
days.I’m bracing myself for my next run tomorrow.
Wish me luck.Till next time, go well!ConnectED is a weekly column by People’s

Talking thetalkYOUNG South Africans will have the opportu-nity to take part in the 19th annual Anglo Amer-ican and Sowetan Young CommunicatorAwards (YCA) being held across the country.
The Western Cape leg of the competition willtake place on 12 May, at the Provincial LegislatureBuilding in Wale Street, Cape Town.
The YCA is a public speaking competition opento all Grade 11 and 12 learners from South Africanpublic high schools, who do not speak English as
their first language. The competition consists of workshops – which
has been completed – district eliminations andprovincial contests in all nine provinces. The win-ner from each province will proceed to the finalcompetition in Johannesburg. The date and venuewill be confirmed at a later stage.
The national winner of the competition will wina R60 000 study bursary and R20 000 for his orher school.
Last year’s winner, Stephen Buabeng-Baidoo,
says winning the competition has had a positiveimpact on his life “in more than one way”.
Buabeng-Baidoo says, “TheYCA has given me an almost inde-finable sense of confidence, andalso instilled in me the notion of in-quiring about the world, and speak-ing passionately and without fear,to ensure that my voice and thoseof others are heard.
“Furthermore, it has allowed meto enter any university of mychoice, and through my bursary, the probability that the majority ofmy tuition fees will be paid for.
“For me the YCA is more thanjust a competition; it makes a realdifference by changing lives.”
The awards were established in1994 by Anglo American and havea long, distinguished history.
They are in partnership with theDepartment of Basic Educationand the Sowetan newspaper, withthousands of learners having ac-tively participated since its incep-tion.
The competition has grown instature and scope over the years, evident in thefact that in 2011 alone, there was a 111% overallattendance at the nationwide workshops, with 2037 learners and 527 teachers taking part.
The competition has a widespread and consid-erable impact on educational development inSouth Africa, by improving numerous students’core competencies in English and oral presenta-tions.
It also improves skills and empowers teachersto impart this knowledge.
Godfrey Gomwe, executive director of AngloAmerican in South Africa, says the impact of the
YCA extends beyond that of justanother public speaking competi-tion.
“The YCA essentially unearthsSouth African talent, and providesthem with invaluable experience, personal growth, and a greatersense of self-confidence. Thecompetition is making a real differ-ence to South Africa’s future bymoulding these young individualsto become dynamic and thought-ful leaders of tomorrow.”
Gomwe concludes that the YCAis contributing positively to SouthAfrica’s development.
“Education is a vital to AngloAmerican , as we believe that thedevelopment of young South Afri-cans will ultimately further the so-cio-economic development of ourcountry.
“Therefore, it is a great honourfor our company to partner withthe YCA, as it embraces the con-cept of nation building by encour-
aging the youth to find solutions to key issues fac-ing their communities and the country as a whole.”
For me the YCA
is more than just
a competition; it
makes a real
difference by
changing lives

Helpline for patients after deliverydelayTHE Department of Health has set upa helpline, manned by a pharmacist,to help those in need of urgent medi-cation while some areas experiencea delay in the issuing of chronicmedication.
This comes after the new serviceprovider, responsible for the delivery ofmedicine parcels to public health facili-ties, experienced initial problems as animproved dispensing system was intro-duced.
Patients were forced to queue forhours at government health facilities inrecent weeks after the data transfer of200 000 patient files to the new contrac-tor, UTi Pharma, caused the delay.
New business processes and theuse of new equipment also impacted onthe delivery service.
The department and the service pro-vider have been dispensing medicinesmanually while the systems were acti-vated.
However, a government spokesper-son reports that the delivery of pre-packed prescriptions has now been re-sumed at many facilities.
Provincial health minister, TheunsBotha, says that the Western Cape is“pushing new boundaries” in terms ofmedicine dispensing.
“The new contract with UTi outlinedexpansion to new outlets and posednew challenges for the provider. What
we are now experiencing are teethingproblems, but they are in the processof being resolved.”
“However, we do apologise to our pa-tients for the disruption and inconven-ience this has caused. We believe thatin the long term it will alleviate longqueues at facilities and bring about animproved service.”
Those experiencing difficulty in col-lecting their medication can phone thehelpline on 083 472 9300, where apharmacist can help by guiding pa-tients to the nearest 24-hour facilitywhere prescriptions can be obtained

THE South African beach volleyball team has se-cured its place at the London Olympics later thisyear, after winning the Confederation of African Vol-leyball (CAVB) Beach Volleyball Continental Cup.
The newly-crowned African champions are the firstteam to qualify through the new Olympic qualificationsystem, which saw 39 countries participate across eachcontinental phase.
South Africa claimed their spot by beating Angola inthe final of the Continental Cup in Flic en Flac, Mauritius,on Sunday.
Freedom Chiya, Grant Goldschmidt, Jerome Freder-icks and Leo Williams were responsible for the impres-sive victory.
South Africa have competed at the Olympic Gamesbeach volleyball tournament just once before, with Gers-hon Rorich and Colin Pocock finishing ninth in Athens2004.
Angola’s chances for an Olympic berth are still aliveas they will travel to Tortoli, Italy, for the FIVB BeachVolleyball World Cup Olympic Qualification tournamentwhich will take place from Wednesday 27 June to Sun-day 1 July.
Nigeria will also join them in Italy after picking up thebronze medal, beating Congo in four straight matches.
