Family members were forced to leave their home after it was destroyed in a fire a few months ago, but their return after council’s reconstruction was marked by bewilderment rather than joy; they say their electricity box had been left exposed, their windows were stuck, and they were unable to coax any hot water from their geyser. The family urge the City of Cape Town to take action and help them fix their problems before disaster strikes. Their home caught alight on 12 March; one woman died from the effects of smoke inhala- tion, and five others were lucky to survive (“Fire kills woman, families left destitute”, People’s Post, 15 March). The home was left in ruins. An electrical fault was found to have caused the fire, and the living space was re- built – but family members feel the job was rushed, and fear another accident could re- sult of the poor workmanship. Says tenant Piet Hein: “It’s dangerous for us to be living in a home like this. “When the fire took pace in March, we were first moved into the community centre and then into temporary containers, but then we were told our time was up as the temporary containers had to be taken away. “We were then moved back into our home, but we were disappointed when we saw its condition. The electrical box is open, with wires hanging out. The toilet lid is loose, a few windows cannot open, and when the wind blows, we’re forced to listen to the rattling sound.” Anna Thomas, who stays in the home, wor- ries that children and adults alike could be shocked by the exposed electric- ity box. “I have a four-year-old child in the house, and accidents happen so quickly,” she says. Hein says the geyser is anoth- er problem. “The geyser doesn’t get warm, leaving us with cold water, or water that is only a lukewarm. It is winter, and we need to take cold showers. “It seems that we’ve moved in- to an incomplete home, and no- one has even come around to in- spect the place, even after I raised my concerns.” Hein says he does appreciate what the City has done, but he urgently needs the problems fixed. “We tried to get help from the councillor, but she is never available, and we need this problem to be dealt with im- mediately. I will fix the home’s problems where I can, and I have painted some of the furniture that was dam- aged by the fire, but I don’t have money to fix all the problems.” Councillor Ernest Sonnen- berg, Mayoral Committee member for Hu- man Settle- ments, says the residents’ griev- ances have been sent to Gambero Home Care and Joverns Electrical, the contractors commissioned by the city to deal with building and electrical work required at the flats. “We will investigate the removal of the face of the electric box in the kitchen. The electri- cal subcontractor will refit the cover to the electrical box, and the hot water from the kitchen and bathroom taps appears to be fair- ly hot. The damaged window frame hinge, loose toilet seat and the possible resetting of the hot water cylinder thermostat have been forwarded for the main contractor’s atten- tion,” says Sonnenberg. “The remedial work will be attended to,” Sonnenberg promises. In conclusion, the councillor goes on to urge tenants to report any concerns they have about the maintenance of their council homes to their nearest housing office. The womanly pride of Proudly South AfricanAS PART of its 93 000 Jobs for Mandela
Day Campaign, Proudly South Afri-can (PSA) is celebrating Women’s Monthand all the women who have played a rolein the country’s development.
The organisation’s job-creation initiative, launched on 16 July, aims to get all state or-gans, businesses and individuals behind thetask of creating 93 000 jobs in the name ofMandela. Women have a huge part to play in
this, PSA recognises; from generations of ter-rible inequality, women are rising to theprominence they deserve, and today it is notunusual to find women in positions of finan-cial and corporate power.
Grant Thornton, one of the people behindan international business report launched onInternational Women’s Day, says South Afri-can businesswomen hold 27% of senior man-agementpositions, beating theglobal averageof 20%. This is largely attributed to the SouthAfrican government’s work in promotinggender equality in the workplace.
Women in business still have a long way togo in some respects, though: only 3% of SouthAfrican companies surveyed had a femalechief executive officer – 5% lower than theirglobal counterparts.
As such, PSA is working hard to garner rec-ognition for the women who so richly deserveit, and praises those leading ladies who dotheir best to elevate South Africa.
In keeping with its Women’s Month cele-bration, PSA is profiling some of its memberswho have found success as dynamic business-women.
The Clover Mama mission
The first high-powered woman under thelimelight is Professor Elaine Vlok, who is thecorporate social investment manager for theaward-winning Clover Mama Afrika Trust.PSA interviewed her about being a woman inbusiness and her secrets to success, andtouched on some of the challenges she experi-ences.
“Our business, Clover Mama Afrika Trust,is a nationwide corporate social investmentprogramme that empowers women to becomeself-sustainable,” says Vlok. “Our servicesare empowering Clover Mamas with skillstraining such as sewing, cooking and baking, the bread oven project, food gardening, quilt-ing and flower arranging.
“We also provide them with the necessarystart-up equipment and material, as well ascontinuous support through regular moni-toring and evaluation visits.”
She says it is a major challenge to find newpartners to help the project with finances, services or both.
“The project has become far too big for Clo-ver to manage on its own, and to maintain theservice we provide towards creating a betterfuture for South Africans, we invite other in-dividuals and corporates to join us on thisjourney of sustainability.”
Vlok says there are 465 people who are per-manently employed by the Clover Mamas. Most of them were once volunteers earningonly stipends; now, through the Clover Mamaself-help projects, they are earning a betterliving.
“We have always been part of the ProudlySouth African initiative, which we are veryproud of... The buy-local concept is super,”says Vlok of PSA’s drive to stimulate SouthAfrica’s economy through getting people tobuy local goods. “We need to support ourown.”
Vlok says Clover Mama Afrika’s vision is
to have a Clover Mama in every communityin South Africa. “Currently we have 35 Ma-mas in 35 geographical regions,” she pointsout with pride.
On success, Vlok’s views are powerfullysimple: “If you believe you can, you will doit. We can all make a huge difference with solittle.”
POWERFUL: Professor Elaine Vlok.

RESIDENTS of the Vygieskraal infor-mal settlement in Belgravia are
struggling to put their lives back togetherafter a raging fire left more than 300 peo-ple destitute.
The fire gutted about 80 homes on Mondaylast week. Allegedly, the fire started when awoman fell asleep after she put food on herstove. Families tried in vain to save their be-longings when the fire swept through the in-formal settlement, but in the end many resi-dents lost everything they owned. (“Fire de-stroys homes”, People’s Post, 2 August.)
Now, the residents who are trying to re-build their homes have been dealt anotherblow: stormy weather is making the task nextto impossible.
When People’s Post visited the informal set-tlement on Friday, residents were hard atwork trying to rebuild their homes, but wereforced to stop by the driving rain. The smell
of burnt-out houses hung in the air, a con-stant reminder of last week’s disaster.
When the rain began, some residents gath-ered around a gas stove in one of the homeslucky enough to escape the blaze, while oth-ers, who had managed to put up a roof beforethe weather struck, stood around a fire towait out the torrent.
“We’re trying to finish our homes, but wecan’t because it keeps raining,” says residentBonke Genu.
“Right now, many residents are beinghoused by neighbours, but it is difficult livinglike this.”
Mthuzi Nkume shares his view: “We arestuck now, doing nothing, and yet we have torebuild our whole lives. We need help to re-build our homes.”
Nokwanda Msutwa says the weather is nottheir only problem: the now-homeless resi-dents don’t have enough in the way of build-ing materials.
“The City of Cape Town has only providedus with five zinc sheets and 10 beams to re-build our homes. Although we appreciatewhat we have been given, we need more.Right now we are using the old burnt zincplates that weren’t damaged that badly.”
Msutwa says the disaster has been hardeston her children.
“We have lost everything. My two children, who still attend school, are forced to borrowschool clothes from friends, but this is notwhat they are used to. I am sleeping on thefloor in a neighbour’s home in thisfreezing weather.”
Elvis Gigi, meanwhile, refused tolet the weather delay the recon-struction of his home.
“The rain is bad, but I can’t stop,”he says. “I was looking for workwhen the fire started, and when I
came home I found I hadlost everything.
“I couldn’t save any-thing, and now I have tostart over. I can’t allow thisrain to stop me, because Ican’t be a nuisance to otherpeople all the time.”
The Mustadaffin Foun-dation and people from allover Cape Town have beendonating food, blankets, clothes and other items tothe residents since news ofthe fire spread.
The residents who wereleft homeless declined theaccommodation offered bythe City of Cape Town, in-stead choosing to stay withfamily and friends to safe-guard the few belongingsthey had saved, and to watch over theirrazed plots.
“If we had left our homes, people wouldhave built on our plots, and that we couldnot allow,” says Msutwa.
“I would rather wait here to make sure no-one takes the place where my home wasbuilt.”
Warrant officer Ian Bennett, Athlone po-lice spokesperson, says the cause of the fire-is still being investigated.

New look for the NantesREYANA STEYN
THE residents of Silvertown, Kewtownand Bridgetown have been urged to
give their views on various plans thathave been drawn up for the Nantes Dis-trict Park by the City of Cape Town.
The City’s aim is to transform the park intoan area that will benefit the whole communi-ty. The infamous park, which runs throughSilvertown, Kewtown and Bridgetown, hasbeen the scene of numerous gruesomecrimes.
People’s Post has reported on a number of
these incidents. Two years ago, the decom-posed body of a young woman was found onthe Nantes (“Gruesome find in Bridgetown”,26 October 2009), while an 18-year-old girl wasraped on the field by two men in April lastyear (“Information sought on rape”, 13 April2010). Furthermore, two men, apparentlywithout connection, were found hangingfrom trees on the field on the same day inMarch ( “Suicide in Athlone”, 3 March 2010).
TheAthlonepolice say therehavealso beencountless robberies on the field, and that peo-ple have been caught drinking and usingdrugs there.
The City of Cape Town’s Parks and UrbanDesign Departments are now consulting thepublic about the future of the field.
“A number of ideas have been floated forpublic input and comment,” says Edgar Car-ollisen, Athlone subcouncil manager.
“One idea is to open an amphitheatre, askate park, a tea room, garden and some flatopen playing areas to enhance the public useand enjoyment of the park. There will also beupgraded pathways and bridges, togetherwith operational ideas to make the park sus-tainable.”
Carollisen says a local historian has beenasked to capture community stories about thehistory of the park, and some of these are to
be incorporated in the designs for the park.“We are urging the community to have a
look at these plans and be a part of this possi-ble redevelopment of the Nantes,” says Carol-lisen. “We ask the community to then attenda meeting and express their views, and saywhether they are happy with the plans.
“This area has been a hive of crime, and wewant the community to decide what theywant.”Draft plans are onpublic displayat thefollowing venues:
. Vangate Mall;
. Bridgetown Mosque in CornflowerStreet, Bridegtown;
. Bridgetown Library;
. St George’s Anglican Church, on the cor-ner of Calendula and Appledene roads; and
. Athlone Subcouncil offices in Kewtown. The proposed feedback meeting is sched-
uled for Saturday at Silvertown CommunityCentre at 14:00.

Caleb trial tremblesREYANA STEYN
THE Cape High Court will decide to-morrow (Wednesday) whether the
trial of a mother and her boyfriend – whostand accused of beating the woman’stoddler to death in her Manenberg home– will continue.
Chantal Booysen and Quinton Aysen werecharged with the murder of Caleb Booysen(2), whose lifeless body was found in his PamCourt home on Friday 21 May 2010.
The pair’s bail applications were heard inthe Athlone Magistrate’s Court. Booysen’sattorneys said, however, that the bail pro-ceedingswere inadmissible due to “incorrect
court procedure”, and asked that his clientand Aysen be acquitted on these grounds.
The trial of Booysen and Aysen – alsoknown as “Orre” – was set aside to take placefrom Monday 1 August to Thursday 18 Au-gust.
It is alleged that little Caleb’s head wasslammed into a wall. A postmortem foundthe child had not died from natural causes, and that he had suffered abuse over time. Hehad multiple injuries, including a brainhaemorrhage, liver problems, a broken armand wrist, and bruises all over his body(“Shock after baby bashed to death”,People’sPost, 1 June 2010).
When Booysen appeared in the AthloneMagistrate’s Court for her bail application
on Monday 30 August last year, she shockedthe court when she said Caleb used to eatMandrax tablets he found on the floor, andthat he constantly cried for food.
She said she would become frustrated andbeat him, but she denied giving Caleb drugs. The day Caleb died, Booysen said, she hadleft the house with the boy asleep in the careof Aysen.
When she returned, she claimed, she dis-covered Caleb’s badly-bruised body under ablanket on a couch.
So far, the state has questioned eight wit-nesses, five relatives and neighbours, two po-lice officers and a pathologist.
The trial will continue tomorrow (Wednes-day).
Murdered on fieldA MAN’s life was viciously taken when he wasstabbed to death on a lonely field in the midstof Manenberg. The 35-year-old man was stabbed once in thechest on The Down’s Sports Field on Saturday, says Warrant Officer Llewelyn Lakay, Manen-berg police spokesperson.“The victim was standing on the field at 18:45when he was approached by two men,” Lakayexplains. “One man then took out a knife andstabbed the man once on the left side of hischest. The two men then ran off on foot.”Paramedics arrived too late to save the man’slife. No arrests have yet been made, and the motivebehind the crime is still unclear; anyone whocan shed light on the murder is urged to callthe case’s investigating officer, Detective Ser-geant Victor Tyobeka, on (021) 699-9400.

A powerful changePOWER is undergoing something of atransformation, after the city awarded atender authorising the sale of prepaidelectricity to a new player.
The new tender, which came into effect atthe beginning of the month, will have a slighteffect on the the way you can buy electricity, and will introduce some new channels forpurchase, the City of Cape Town’s press re-lease states.
To follow is a summary of the ways, bothnew and old, in which you can buy electrici-ty.
.Internet vendingThe biggest change brought by the new
tender is the way in which you can purchaseelectricity online.
Previously, the city had three internetservice providers, and customers could buyelectricity from four different websites.
This number has been cut down, and onlyone online service provider –www.ibuy.co.za – is now authorised to sellelectricity over the Internet.
This change will affect around 30 000 pre-paid customers, the city says, so if you wereregistered with anybody else before, you’llhave to make a move.
.Cellphone vendingIf you like to buy your electricity via your
though – if you’ve been buying electricity viaSMS already, you don’t need to make anychanges.
New SMS customers can register for thisservice on either of the following sites:www.prepaid24.co.za or www.ipay.co.za.
tricity vouchers are becoming available, andbank ATMs can also dispense vouchers.
The dedicated vending machines are beingrolled out in stages, and the city promisesthat customers will be the first to know whena new machine is installed.
. Scratch cardsSimilar to prepaid cellphone top-up cards,
electricity cards will be available at variousstores in short order.
You’ll be able to purchase either a physicalor virtual scratch card, and redeem it usingyour cellphone at any time.
.Point of sale terminalsAs usual, you’ll still be able to buy electric-
ity at the tills of various stores throughoutthe city.
Visitwww.capetown.gov.za/electricity fora detailed list of vendors available.
• The City of Cape Town has apologised inadvance for any inconvenience these chang-es may cause.
If you need any help with the new systems, you’re welcome to contact the city’s Electric-ity Department by phoning 086 010 3089,SMSing 31220, or emailing [email protected]. Alternatively, visit www.cape-town.gov.za.

Robbers get two yearsREYANA STEYN
TWO men have been sentenced to twoyears behind bars after they werefound guilty of robbery by the Wyn-berg Regional Court.
Shakier Abrahams (28) and Tyron Mar-itz (25) bought their sentence when theystole R600 000’s worth of equipment froma group of Americans in Bokmakierie on9 July.
People’s Post previously reported (“USvolunteers robbed on highway”, 12 July)that the five volunteers, in the country aspart of a teacher exchange programmecalled Teach with Africa, had stoppedtheir vehicle on Jan Smuts Drive to get amap out of the boot.
Five men rushed over and grabbed eve-rything they could from the back of thecar, making off with bags containing ex-pensive digital cameras, laptops, harddrives and work done by children underthe teaching programme.
The volunteers chased the robbers in an
attempt to regain their items, but theirchase was in vain.
The Athlone police were notified of thecrime, and Abrahams and Maritz werecaught with the goods the very next day.
Three other men were also taken in forquestioning, but released due to a lack ofevidence. Warrant officer Ian Bennett,Athlone police spokesperson, says offic-ers spent hours investigating the case.“Detective Constable Alvin Fortiunworked around the clock and put the casetogether.
The police officers tried to gain as muchinformation on the case so that the mattercouldbebrought to court before thevolun-teers left South Africa.”

The volunteers have since returned totheir homeland.

Your SMSes. A big hearty thank you to John at SAS-SA Heideveld for being there for hiscommunity. Keep up the good work! GodBless. Natasha
In response. Why doesn’t the owner of the house sell

By the way. I can’t understand why three police vehi-
cles have to stand on the M5 because one po-lice vehicle was stuck. That makes a total offour police vehicles out of duty, with betweenfour and eight officers off duty. SAPS, pleaseprioritise. Leave it to the mechanics to fix thevehicles. You guys were not being effective.W Abrahams
. Why are so many refugees either preg-
nant or holding a baby and a toddler they can’tafford to have? To avoid deportation? Whatabout contraceptives?
. How long must we wait for land claimsmoney? We are waiting for too long now, andit’s so shameful because we are waiting forstuff that belongs to us. W
. Can’t the people from Land Claims con-tact the claimants to keep them up to date? We’re your paper – please make some fire un-der them.
. I’m interested in taking care of orphansbut I don’t know how to go about it. Pleasehelp?
. Graffiti taggers are rising again. Sometime ago, you had an article where one wasapprehended. SAPS was involved and the par-ents pleaded for the case to be withdrawn andthat they would serve punishment to avoid acriminal record. It now appears the publicmust do the police investigation. You need ev-idence in order to prosecute. How can you saythat you don’t have to be caught in the act?
Farewell, friend BrianYOUR recent article on the sudden pass-ing of Brian Gaffney does justice to theperson that we all knew and grew to re-spect (“Saluting a legend in his time”, Peo-ple’s Post, 2 August).
Brian personified the SACOS slogan,“no normal sport in an abnormal socie-ty”, and his contribution will long be re-membered amongst those who fought forchange in our country.
I had the privilege of meeting Brianmore than 20 years ago when I joined theBattswood family, and have fond memo-ries of the many baseball meetings weheld in our family home in Wynberg.
I was a rookie administrator at thetime, but Brian and Eric Dorman nursedme along as we prepared to embrace the
long-awaited change in our sporting envi-ronment.
Brian will be remembered for the rolehe played in shaping the lives of manysports men and women, and his legacywill serve as an example to the many tal-ented young folk making their mark inour communities. He has joined the Heav-enly Hall of Fame, where others havegone before him. Richard Barnes, Sylviaand Arthur Jeftha, Harold Simmons, Ver-nie Wessels, Vincent Baadjies and LennieKleintjies are just some of the names thatcome to mind. He was a legend in his timeand will be sorely missed.

PSL kicks off this weekendPSL kicks off this weekendTASMIN CUPIDO
THE coming weekend will see the kick-off of the 2011-2012 Premier SoccerLeague (PSL), and both of Cape Town’steams – Ajax Cape Town and Engen San-tos – are gearing up for their first match-es.
After pre-season training, several warm-up matches and the arrival and departure ofa number of players at both clubs, the timeto commence their title challenges has come.
The People’s Team, Santos, host MorokaSwallows at Athlone Stadium on Fridayevening at 19:30. Head coach Boebie Solo-mons and his troops will be looking to forgetabout their 1-0 loss in the quarterfinal of theMTN 8 Knockout to Orlando Pirates at theOrlando Stadium in Soweto on Saturday.
Despite being able to hold the match to a0-0 draw after the regulation 90 minutes, itwas strike by Siyabonga Sangweni of the2010-2011 PSL winners during extra time thatended the Santos campaign.
Now Santos turn their attention to Swal-lows. The last time the two sides met was inMarch, when Santos travelled to the Dobson-ville Stadium in Soweto for a 0-0 draw.
The Santos squad, again under the leader-ship of midfielder Tyren Arendse, has ac-quired the services of Nigerian and formerAmaZulu defender Pere Ariweriyai, Wit-bank Aces fullback Wayne Bishop, and Vas-co da Gama striker Jonathan Armogram.
TheotherCapeTown-based team,AjaxCT,travel to Rustenberg to take on PlatinumStars at the Royal Bafokeng Stadium on Sat-urday afternoon at 15:00. Head coachMaarten Stekelenburg’s charges will belooking to draw some positivity and momen-tum from their 5-2 thrashing of SupersportUnited in the quarterfinal of the MTN 8Knockout at Cape Town Stadium on Friday.
Striker Terror Fanteni seemed to be re-gaining the form he showed last season as heslotted three of his side’s five goals to earnthe man of the match award.
With several players, such as captainGranville Scott, defender Nazeer Allie andmidfielder George Maluleka, confirmingtheir loyalty by extending their contracts, and the inclusion of new blood in the squad, the Urban Warriors will be looking to emu-late their last season’s performance – thistime with the hope of eventually lifting thetrophy.
The loss of winger Sameegh Doutie to Or-lando Pirates may leave a void on the right, butnewacquisitionsSici SelembeandAlcar-do van Graan, as well as the return of Mfun-do “Hadji” Shumana, should make up for theloss. The clubalsoholds on tohopes thatmid-fielder and defender Mbulelo “OJ” Mabizela,as well as former Liverpool FC goalkeeperSander Westerveld, will still sign.
•Tickets for the Engen Santos vs MorokaSwallows game at Athlone Stadium areavailable from any Shoprite and Checkersstores.
