They acted as if they were doing me a favour.” For Heideveld resident Samuel Barns the commute for primary healthcare is much shorter. “I am relieved to have an emer- gency unit on my doorstep. I don’t have a car and it was difficult for me to travel to Jooste if I needed ur- gent medical attention after hours,” says Barns. Another resident, speaking on condition of anonymity, says she hopes the service will be as good in six months’ time as it is now. “I think the new environment has boosted the spirits of the staff because everyone is friendly and happy. LABOUR: YOU CAN BEAT UNEMPLOYMENT BLUES

Grim horror of joblessnessLAILA MAJIET

@laila_newsie

The dark psychological impactof being unemployed needs tobe brought to light.

This comes from clinical psychol-ogist Dr Adelbert Scholtz, who isurging the need for recognising thetraumatic psychological erosioncaused by long-term unemploy-ment.

Theharmful effect is on both indi-vidual South Africans and the na-tional psyche.

As the sole provider for his fami-ly, *Mark slipped into despair afterbeing retrenched.

Desperate to put food on the table,he was willing to clean windows toearn a few extra rands.

But he was losing hope againstthe battle to not be engulfed by de-pression.

“I felt I had failedmy family. Hav-ingbeen the sole breadwinner for aslong as I have been married, losingmy job made me feel like I could nolonger fulfil my purpose,” Marksays. “I felt hopeless and lost, butthen realised things were not goingto get better if I did not do some-thing to turn my hardshipsaround.”

Paralysed by unemployment, hehad reached an all-time new low.

“I began to beg for odd jobs. Beingable to buy a loaf of bread felt likea victory and soonmy faith and dig-nitywas being restored,” he recalls.“This gaveme the strength to perse-vere.”

Research shows high rates oflong-term unemployment are asso-ciated with higher rates of depres-sion, saysScholtz, and cautions thatdepression is the most commoncause of suicide,

Mark has since found a perma-nent job.

“I went out there in a bid to re-

store my dignity, but often felt likeI was losing a part of my soul everyday,” the 54-year-old man says. “Iwaswilling to do anything andwitheach new day a new opportunitywould present itself. God openeddoors and that was a sign that nomatter the circumstances, He willnever abandon you.”

One’s identity is ultimatelylinked to one’s occupation, saysScholtz.

“Your status is also dependent onyour occupation. Furthermorework is where we spendmost of ourtime,” Scholtz explains. “If some-body cannot find work, his or herneed for an identity as well as theirhuman dignity is thwarted.”

The adage every cloud has a sil-ver liningmight seeminsincereandpatronising, but this is part ofScholtz’s encouragement to those inthe doldrums.

Losing your job may be the besttime for a little introspection andre-evaluation.

This includes creating your ownopportunities, volunteering orlearning a new skill or two, Scholtzrecommends.

“Hardships are often a test ofyour faith so it is vital to not losehope. Create your own opportuni-ties,” he says.

“Put out feelers for vacancies andpersonally hand in your CV. Thisleaves a good impression as itshows your keen interest in a job.”

Volunteering or working for freemay not be such a bad idea either,Scholtz adds.

“It is a good plan to work for free.Your supervisor may be satisfiedwith your work and offer you a per-manent position. Before you knowit the company will realise theycan’t do without you. It also looksgood on your CV.”

Scholtz, also a retired pastor, be-lieves “God has a soft spot for the

poor”.“Often poor people think the Lord

has forgotten them and that God ispunishing them, but He has not for-gotten you.Never lose sight of this,”he firmly states.

“Happiness is not to be found inriches or the pursuit of pleasure. Itis a by-product of something else. Itis created when you make a differ-ence in the life of somebody else.”

The South African Depressionand Anxiety Group (Sadag) con-firms facing the terrifying prospectof unemployment is a reality thatmany South Africans struggle toavoid these days.

With high unemployment ratesand the job market looking increas-ingly bleak for first-time job seek-ers, the stage is set for the ever-esca-lating prevalence of depressionamong the unemployed.

Unemployment and the resultingdepression is a grim challenge fac-ing mental health professionals.

Sadag manager Cassey Amooreoffers self-help tips to address de-pression.

“Don’t bottle things up. If youhave some bad news or a major up-set, tell people close to you about itand how you feel. Although youmay want to be alone, you may feelbetter if you try to take part in someroutine activities you previouslyenjoyed with your family andfriends. Increase positive contact,”she says.

“Try tomake a list of small activi-ties that can be done often duringthe day to show positive loving feel-ings. Maintain a good diet and exer-cise.

“Get outdoors, even if it is only fora walk. Any form of exercise, rigor-ous or gentle can have beneficial re-sults.”V If you or someone you know needs help, call a counsellor at Sadag on 0800 20526or SMS 31393.

Metrorail march is back on trackHENRY BOOYSEN

@henryspoke

Cosatu will commence mass ac-tion on Saturday against Metro-rail in defiance of the parastatal’sdecision to increase train fares.

The demonstration, which willtake place at noon at the StationPlaza at Cape Town station, waspreviously delayed when the Na-tional Economic Developmentand Labour Council (Nedlac) en-tered into negotiations with Co-satu and the Ministry of Trans-

port. “Cosatu condemns Metro-rail for the decision to proceedwith the train fare increases. Thefare increase is a double blow tocommuters in the light of the badservices that are currently beingprovidedbyMetrorail andwewillmarch in protest on 12 July,” saysCosatu provincial secretary TonyEhrenreich.

“When train services are de-layed, workers and commutersmust take buses and taxis. Thismeans extra costs on top of thecost of weekly or monthly tickets

they have already paid to useMetrorail services.”

Metrorail’s failure to delay theincrease “until the service im-proves andworkers are not preju-diced, has left Cosatu with no al-ternative but to file aClassActionsuit against them to recover thelost money for workers”, Ehren-reich says.

The increase in single ticketsrange between 50 to 80c.

Metrorail regional manager Ri-chard Walker says services willcontinue.

HEIDEVELD: OCCUPATION IN AUGUST

Rain delaysschoolconstructionTARRENLEE HABELGAARN

@LeeLaVidaLoca

Little ones hoping to start the third termin their new classrooms will be left dis-appointed as the completion date of

construction of Heideveld Primary hasbeen delayed.Originally scheduled for completion this

month, the new building will only be readyfor occupation at the end of August. The multi-million rand project sees the

school being rebuilt from scratch.Basic education department spokesper-

son Albert Gumbo says the project that wasscheduled to be completed in the secondterm, has been delayed due to an above av-erage rainfall experienced in the region.“That coupled with the high water table

in the Cape Flats area led to delays in con-struction. Construction of Heideveld Pri-mary School started on 11 March 2013 andcompletion is planned for August thisyear,” he says. The project forms part of the Accelerated

Schools Infrastructure Delivery Initiative(Asidi). This is a national department of basic ed-

ucation intervention to build close to 500schools across the country.

“The objective of Asidi is to eradicate thebasic safety norms backlog in schools with-out water, sanitation and electricity. It willalso replace those schools constructed frominappropriatematerial such asmud, plank-ies and asbestos. The Schools Infrastruc-ture Backlog Grant funds the Asidi portfo-lio,” he explains.Asidi will be building 25 schools in the

Western Cape.“When such a project takes place, learn-

ers are moved to temporary mobile unitsand in this case, the units are situated onthe sports field. Teaching carries onthroughout the construction period andschoolmanagement is to be commended fortheir disciplined efforts inmaking sure thatthis happens,” he adds.Principal Edgar Wyngaard says teachers

have been trying to continue with teachingas best as possible but can’t wait for the up-grade to be completed.“Staff and pupils have been very patient

and have given their full cooperation dur-ing the upgrade. It has been challenging butwe are focused on the end result,” he says.“With thenewbuilding itwill create abet-

ter teaching environment. We will be ableto accommodatemore learners as the previ-ous space was not conducive to learning.

Teachers and pupils were in small spacesand a lot of our extra funds had to be usedto maintain the crumbling building.”The official openingwillmark a new start

for the school, he adds. “We will be havinga big celebration to showoff our new school. Now we will also be able to raise funds forluxuries such as smart boards and otherteaching aids to make learning interestingfor staff and pupils,” Wyngaard says.“It has lifted the spirit of everyone at the

school and we are grateful to finally havethis opportunity for our kids.”

A n office to facilitiate thousands of landrestituation claims has opened in Mow-bray.

The land claims process opened last week, al-lowing South Africa’s victims of land dispos-session to lodge their land claims, for a periodof five years.Claimants need to apply in person, says De-

partment of Rural Development and Land Re-form regional spokesperson Vuyani Nkasayi.“Any claimants must provide a a certified

copyof your idenity, a signed letter authorisingyou to act on behalf of your family or communi-ty and signed by twowitnesses, a list of the peo-ple you represent and a letter from the Masterof the High Court if you are the executor of anestate. Alternatively, you must have a writtendecision from a community meeting, signed bythe person who facilitated the meeting, if lodg-ing on behalf of a community,” he says.District SixWorkingCommittee chairperson

ShahiedAjam saysmany families did not placeclaims during the original restitution processas themessage was not carried across the CapeFlats by mass media. In addition, many fami-lies relocated several times after the removals. This meant government was not able to easi-

ly trace them and important documentationwas lost. “Education is a big part of our work,”Ajam says. “We must teach people about theirrights and the duties of government. We wantthe people of District Six to realise their valueand their worth. True restitutionmust be prac-tised.”Claimants will have to provide certified cop-

ies of their ID and those of their parents, Ajamsays.Certified copies of anyphysical records of the

Wewill come to you, through-out the province,” he says.V Claims can be lodged at the Mowbray Lodgement Cen-tre at 10 Rhodes Avenue. Office hours are Monday to Fri-day, from 8:00 to 16:30.

BELGRAVIA: SINISTER CON MEN USING CASH TO LURE YOUNGSTERS FROM HOMES

Gullible children easy preyTARRENLEE HABELGAARN

@LeeLaVidaLoca

Two conmen are cashing in on Belgra-via’s naive children.

Police are urging the public thatchild trafficking is a dark reality and to bevigilant.

The pair, believed to be in their 20s, havebeen going door-to-door offering youngsterscash for their expensive toys and gadgets. Toreceive their money, children are told to ac-company the men to a remote location, which most refuse to do.

The con artists then claim to go them-selves to fetch the money, but never return.

According to police, at least 10 incidentshave been reported to the station.

Everything from scooters to video gamesare requested to be resold or exchanged fora better model.

Paulita Tobias says her son was recentlypromised cash in exchange for his skate-board. “A number of kids have fallen intothis trick over the past two months. My songave themen10 games, but didn’t receive themoney. The men said he will get the money,

but he has to go with them to a block of flatsin Kewtown,” she says.

“My son and his friends, who also gave themen of their personal possessions, felt un-safe about the situation and said they willwait at home for the money. They next daythe men returned, but once again insistedthe boys go with them. My son again re-fused.”

This may be a way for would-be kidnap-pers to lure children to a remote location, warns Athlone police spokesperson Ser-geant Zita Norman.

She confirms a number of recoveries andarrests have been made by police. “At least10 similar incidents have been reported tothe station. We have arrested one man fromAthlone who was caught with games afterbeing identified,” she says.

“It is alleged that this con is away to trafficchildren. We are asking residents to educatechildren to not speak to strangers and notto sell personal items.Weare also investigat-ing the possibility of a syndicate.”V Have you fallen victim to this con? MUNICIPAL REBATES: APPLY EVERY THREE YEARS

Rates reliefDESIRÉE RORKE

@dezzierorke

A pplications for municipal rates re-bates from the City of Cape Town nowonly have to be submitted once every

three years, as opposed to annually.“This resolution was made last month in

an attempt to be more caring to the mostvulnerable residents in the city,” says fi-nance mayco member Ian Neilson.Neilson says this move will significantly

lessen the administrative burden on boththe applicants and the City.About 26 000 applications are received

each year and applicants have to providetheir identity documents, proof of income,

tax forms and three months’ bank state-ments with each application.“It is important to note that applicants

who experience a significant change (de-crease or increase) in their household in-come are still required to re-apply for a re-bate on their municipal accounts in the ap-plicable financial year,” he cautions. Those residents who have applied for a

municipal rates rebate during the 2013/14financial year and whose financial situa-tion remains unchanged, only have to re-apply for a rebate as from 1 July 2016.Pensioners and people with disabilities

with a household income of R12 000 and lessa month can apply for a rates rebate whichis applied according to a sliding scale.

Synchro pair headedfor the big timeLIAM MOSES

@LiamCPT

South Africa’s most talented young syn-chronised swimming duo have em-barked on a punishing training regime

in hopes of making an impact at an interna-tional tournament.Tatum-Lee Petersen from Athlone and

Bergvliet resident Sarah Keyte will repre-sent SA at theMediterranean Cup in Greecein September. The pair usually train for three hours,

three times a week, but from Saturday 12 toSaturday 19 July theywill spend eight hoursdaily focusing on training.Keyte, a pupil at Spingfield Girls’ Convent

School, says its all worth it.“You have to put in a lot of hours for the

sport,” she says.“You have to give up a lot, but in the end

it’s all worth it becausewewill be competingon an international stage.”The Grade 9 pupil took up the sport when

her mother’s friend suggested she give it atry. She was only in Grade 2 at the time andshe has been hooked ever since.Petersen started at the same age when her

swimming coach recommended she give thesport a try.“I like that you are able to express yourself

in ways that you aren’t able to in othersports,” Petersen says. “You’re able todance, but you’re still in the water. It getsyour creative juices flowing. This sport isboth about creativity and physical ability.”For her, the toughest aspect of synchro-

nised swimming is memorising and perfect-ing routines, and timing. The twoyouths started competing as a duo

six years ago, dominating the sport almost

immediately.They aremembers of Barracudas Synchro

Club and are coached by Sue Manners-Wood, the national senior synchronisedswimming coach. She believes the duo is headed straight for

the top of the sport.“They have won their duet in every age

group theyhave competed in throughout theyears,” she says. “They have also been iden-tified by Swimming SouthAfrica as the duetto take over from the current SA senior duet. They have been identified to compete at theCommonwealth Games in Durban in 2020and are being groomed for that competi-tion.”Petersen andKeyte qualified for theMedi-

terranean Cup with a score of 6.3 out of 10at theNationalChampionships inApril. Thepair win gold at the championships.Theywill compete against the sport’smost

elite under-16 teams at the competition. Theworld’s top three sides, Russia, Spain andChina will also be in attendance. But a lack of facilities, finances and regu-

lar competition against top oppositionmeans the girls have virtually no hope ofbringing home a medal, but Manners-Woodhas set her students a different goal.“I look at it in terms of score. I would like

to see the girls improve on the score theyachieved at the National Championships,”she says.“I would ideally like to see my girls get be-

tween 6 and 6.5, which would mean they arevery competent. That would be a goodachievement. I’m also being conservative, because I think they can get 6.8 or 7.”V Petersen, Keyte and the six other members of theteam will each have to pay R30 000 to attend thetournament. Anyone able to assist the team withsponsorship should call Francis Keyte, convenor ofWestern Province Synchronised Swimming, on072 775 2772.

CT Marathon aims for new heightsA recently sealed naming rights sponsor-ship could see the Cape Town Marathon be-come Africa’s first World Marathon Majors(WWM) event.WWM currently consists of the six largest

and most renowned annual marathons inthe world. The series charts the performances of ath-

letes in the Tokyo, Boston, New York City,Chicago, LondonandBerlinmarathons overa two-year cycle, with the top performingmen’s and women’s runners splitting $1000 000 at the end of the cycle. All six races are ranked as gold on the In-

ternational Association of Athletics Federa-tions’ (IAAF) RoadRace Label Events classi-fication system, which ranks theworld’s topraces as bronze, silver or gold. The CTMara-thon is not currently ranked. However, a sponsorship from Sanlam,

which will see the race renamed the SanlamCT Marathon, has allowed organisers tobring forward plans to apply for Silver Labelclassification.South African long-distance Olympic

medallist Elana Meyer, Sanlam CT Mara-thon spokesperson and executive committeemember, says the race’s potential will be“immeasurable” once the Silver Label isawarded. “We are extremely pleased to havea leading financial services group like San-

lam working with us to realise the potentialof this very special event,” Meyer says.“We offer contestants the largest sum of

prize money for a South African standardmarathon, with cash prizes exceedingR1,6m– in line with international city marathonbenchmarks and a requirement to be consid-ered for WMM and IAAF membership.”The race is jointly hosted by the City of

Cape Town, Western Province Athletics(WPA) and ASEM Running. This year the 42.2km marathon race will

be the culmination of a festival of running. It will feature in a 10km Peace Run, a 4.2kmPeaceRun, twoPeaceTrailRuns, aPeaceRe-lay and a Peace Mile Race.SanlamCEOYegsRamiah says the compa-

ny is delighted to be the official headlinesponsor of the marathon.“The sport of running is easily accessible

andwithin everyone’smeans.By its veryna-ture, it requires determination, dedicationand the belief that a lot can come from verylittle,” he says.“Webelieve an event suchas thiswill have

a real and positive influence by enablingpeople to live their best possible lives. Welook forward to a long and positive associa-tion with the CT Marathon.”Themarathon will take place on Saturday

20 and Sunday 21 September.
