Introducing Pinterest – The Virtual Pinboard
Source: http://pinterest.com/
Pinterest is an image-based social curation network allowing users to
organise and share theme-based image collections on boards aiming to
connect everyone in the world through shared tastes and interests.
Pinterest combines visual social curation with
the interest graph

It enables users to share their interests & experiences by uploading/
pinning relevant images to personalised 'boards'. Sharing a recipe,
book, CD or painting can reveal a common link between 2 people.
Pinterest allows you to overlook topics that
don't interest

Curates content of users' interest through visuals by following 'boards'
rather than following all postings of accounts followed, like on other
networks. Users only see things of interest on their timelines.
Pinterest works for brands that can build
visual interactions

Practitioners think Pinterest throws open interesting avenues to market
brands through visual enticement, but some feel that brands might have
jumped on the bandwagon without seeing any relevance for themselves.
Pinterest receives mostly positive reviews

Mixed reviews for Pinterest, the majority of which like it for its simplicity,
aesthetic appeal, addictiveness & networking features while a few think
the platform gets stale beyond a certain point for its limitations.
The Evolution – 2012, possibly the year of
curation?

2012 predicted as the year of social curation as users would rather
consume content than create it. Part of Pinterest's success can be
attributed to the evolution of social media to push-button content curation.
A threat to other social networks

Pinterest is seen as a threat to other networks because of its focus on
treating content as king through its push-button mechanism and because
it caters to a new influential diaspora – 25- to 44-year-old women.
The future : The Next big thing?

Slated as the next big thing because of its simplicity to structure push-
button content generation into sets of curated content, carving out a niche
market for itself, paving the way for more niche market social networks.
