AIM To expose the students to the concept of design of various types of electrical machines. OBJECTIVES OF THE COURSE: To provide sound knowledge about constructional details and design of various electrical machines. I. To study mmf calculation and thermal rating of various types of electrical machines. II. To desi gn arm ature and fiel d systems for D.C. machines. III. To desi gn core, yoke, wind ings and coo ling s ystems of tr ansform ers. IV. To desi gn stator an d rotor of induction machines. V. To design stator and rotor of synchronous machines. PREREQUISITES: A prior know l ed g e in the foll o wing subjects have bee n co nsi de red as a pre- requisite. 1. El ectrica l machines-II (Construction, w ork ing pr in cip l e and character i st i cs o f AC m achines like in d u ction a nd synchr o n o us m achines) Course outcomes: At the end of the course the students should be able to: 1) Understand the basics of design considera tions and li mitations of electrical machines. 2) Calculate mmf, leakage reactance, losses and thermal rating of various types of electrical machines. 3) Get an overview of an insulation classes, various cooling methods and different enclosures of rot ating machines 4) Perform fundamen tal ca lculation related to design of armature and field systems for D.C. machines.
