A note for visitors: Were thankful that you could join us for worship today, and we pray God blesses you in your time here. The service is printed in your bulletin. If youhave any questions dont hesitate to ask someone around you!

St. Francis Church wants to encourage families to worship together. The practice of dividing families for worship is a modern invention and is often detrimental to the goal of worshipping as a body. In order to be a community where all ages feel welcome,we provide coloring materials for children to use during worship and seek to be acommunity that understands the speci c gifts and challenges that children bring. Weencourage you, should you feel comfortable doing so, to sit toward the front with your children, as little-ones are often more attentive if they can see what is happening.

That being said, we understand that there may be times when it is best to takeadvantage of child care, which we have available in the room immediately through the Kitchen off of the entryway.

In Preparation for worship: We invite you to take a few moments before the service

begins to be still, and rest from the business of your lives. Take time to breathe deeply, and re ect upon the past week. When youre ready, you might say the following prayer or one like it in preparation for worship.

O Almighty God, who pours out on all who desire it the spirit of grace and of supplication: Deliver us, when we draw near to you, from coldness of heart and wanderings of mind, that with steadfast thoughts and kindled affections we may worship you in spirit and in truth; though Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

    Collect of the Day:

O God, your never-failing providence sets in order all things both in heaven and earth: Put away from us, we entreat you, all hurtful things, and give us those things which are pro table for us; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen .

    First Reading: Deuteronomy 11:18-21,26-28

    All sit.

Moses puts a choice before the people. Obeying Gods commandments is the way toexperience lifes fullness; ignoring Gods commandments is the way of death.

A Reading from the book of Deuteronomy.

Moses said to the people, You shall therefore lay up these words of mine in your heartand in your soul; and you shall bind them as a sign upon your hand, and they shall be asfrontlets between your eyes. And you shall teach them to your children, talking of them when you are sitting in your house, and when you are walking by the way, and when youlie down, and when you rise. And you shall write them upon the doorposts of your houseand upon your gates, that your days and the days of your children may be multiplied in theland which the Lord swore to your fathers to give them, as long as the heavens are above

the earth. Behold, I set before you this day a blessing and a curse: the blessing, if you obey the commandments of the Lord your God, which I command you this day, and the curse,if you do not obey the commandments of the Lord your God, but turn aside from the way which I command you this day, to go after other gods which you have not known.

Reader: The Word of the Lord. People: Thanks be to God.

The Psalm of the day: Remain seated

    Psalm 46

    Deus noster refugium

1 God is our refuge and strength, *a very present help in trouble.

2 Therefore we will not fear, though the earth be moved, *and though the mountains be toppled into the

    depths of the sea;

3 Though its waters rage and foam, *and though the mountains tremble at its tumult.

4 The Lord of hosts is with us; *

the God of Jacob is our stronghold.

5 There is a river whose streams make glad the city of God, *the holy habitation of the Most High.

6 God is in the midst of her;she shall not be overthrown; *God shall help her at the break of day.

7 The nations make much ado, and the kingdoms are shaken; *God has spoken, and the earth shall melt away.

8 The Lord of hosts is with us; *the God of Jacob is our stronghold.

9 Come now and look upon the works of the Lord, * what awesome things he has done on earth.

10 It is he who makes war to cease in all the world; *he breaks the bow, and shatters the spear, and burns the shields with re.

11 Be still, then, and know that I am God; *I will be exalted among the nations;I will be exalted in the earth.

12 The Lord of hosts is with us; *

the God of Jacob is our stronghold.

    Second Reading: Romans 1:16-17;3:22b-31

All of us have sinned, but those who accept and trust in Jesus receive the gift of Godsgrace. Paul asserts that we can be proud to proclaim this good news.

A Reading from Pauls letter to the Church in Rome.

For I am not ashamed of the gospel: it is the power of God for salvation to every one who has faith, to the Jew rst and also to the Greek. For in it the righteousness of God isrevealed through faith for faith; as it is written, He who through faith is righteous shalllive.the righteousness of God through faith in Jesus Christ for all who believe. For thereis no distinction; since all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God, they are justi ed by his grace as a gift, through the redemption which is in Christ Jesus, whom God putforward as an expiation by his blood, to be received by faith. This was to show Godsrighteousness, because in his divine forbearance he had passed over former sins; it wasto prove at the present time that he himself is righteous and that he justi es him who hasfaith in Jesus. Then what becomes of our boasting? It is excluded. On what principle? Onthe principle of works? No, but on the principle of faith. For we hold that a man is justi ed by faith apart from works of law.

Or is God the God of Jews only? Is he not the God of Gentiles also? Yes, of Gentiles also, since God is one; and he will justify the circumcised on the ground of their faith and theuncircumcised through their faith. Do we then overthrow the law by this faith? By no

    6

    7/16

means! On the contrary, we uphold the law.

Reader: The Word of the Lord. People: Thanks be to God.

Sequence Hymn: In the Lord Ill ever be thankful Taiz

Holy Gospel: Matthew 7:21-29 All stand.

Our faith compels us to show mercy to the needy, even as acts of mercy help our faith togrow. Jesus teaches that righteousness is an expression of our developing relationshipwith God.

Gospeller: The Holy Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to _______. People: Glory to you, Lord Christ.

Jesus said, Not every one who says to me, Lord, Lord, shall enter the kingdom of heaven, but he who does the will of my Father who is in heaven. On that day many will say to me,Lord, Lord, did we not prophesy in your name, and cast out demons in your name, anddo many mighty works in your name? And then will I declare to them, I never knew you;depart from me, you evildoers. Every one then who hears these words of mine and doesthem will be like a wise man who built his house upon the rock; and the rain fell, and theoods came, and the winds blew and beat upon that house, but it did not fall, because ithad been founded on the rock. And every one who hears these words of mine and does not

do them will be like a foolish man who built his house upon the sand; and the rain fell, andthe oods came, and the winds blew and beat against that house, and it fell; and great wasthe fall of it. And when Jesus nished these sayings, the crowds were astonished at histeaching, for he taught them as one who had authority, and not as their scribes.

Sermon: The Rev. Joseph B. Howard

    T he N iceNe c reed

W e believe in one God,the Father, the Almighty, maker of heaven and earth,of all that is, seen and unseen.

We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God,eternally begotten of the Father,God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God,begotten, not made,of one Being with the Father.Through him all things were made. For us and for our salvation

he came down from heaven:by the power of the Holy Spirit

he became incarnate from the Virgin Mary, and was made man.

    For our sake he was cruci ed under Pontius Pilate;he suffered death and was buried.On the third day he rose againin accordance with the Scriptures;

he ascended into heavenand is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead,

and his kingdom will have no end. We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life,

who proceeds from the Father and the Son.With the Father and the Son he is worshiped and glori ed.He has spoken through the Prophets. We believe in one holy catholic and apostolic Church. We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins.

We look for the resurrection of the dead, and the life of the world to come. Amen.

It is right, and a good and joyful thing, always and everywhere to give thanks to you, Father Almighty, Creator of heaven and earth.

For you are the source of light and life; you made us in your image, and called us to newlife in Jesus Christ our Lord.

Therefore we praise you, joining our voices with Angels and Archangels and with all thecompany of heaven, who for ever sing this hymn to proclaim the glory of your Name:

The Sanctus: S-130Holy, Holy, Holy Lord, God of power and might,

Heaven and earth are full of your glory.Hosanna in the highest.

Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord.Hosanna in the highest.

Please stand or kneel at this time, as best helps you to pray.

Holy and gracious Father: In your in nite love you made us for yourself; and, when wehad fallen into sin and become subject to evil and death, you, in your mercy, sent JesusChrist, your only and eternal Son, to share our human nature, to live and die as one of us, to reconcile us to you, the God and Father of all.

He stretched out his arms upon the cross, and offered himself, in obedience to your will, a perfect sacri ce for the whole world.

On the night he was handed over to suffering and death, our Lord Jesus Christ took

bread; and when he had given thanks to you, he broke it, and gave it to his disciples, and said, Take, eat: This is my Body, which is given for you. Do this for the remembrance of me. After supper he took the cup of wine; and when he had given thanks, he gave it to them, and said, Drink this, all of you: This is my Blood of the new Covenant, which is shed for you and for many for the forgiveness of sins. Whenever you drink it, do this for theremembrance of me.

Therefore we proclaim the mystery of faith:

Christ has died.Christ is risen.Christ will come again.

We celebrate the memorial of our redemption, O Father, in this sacri ce of praise and thanksgiving. Recalling his death, resurrection, and ascension, we offer you these gifts.

Sanctify them by your Holy Spirit to be for your people the Body and Blood of your Son,the holy food and drink of new and unending life in him. Sanctify us also that we may faithfully receive this holy Sacrament, and serve you in unity, constancy, and peace; and at the last day bring us with all your saints into the joy of your eternal kingdom.

All this we ask through your Son Jesus Christ. By him, and with him, and in him, in theunity of the Holy Spirit all honor and glory is yours, Almighty Father, now and for ever.

    AMEN.

    A Note on Todays Readings

Proper 4: Sunday closest to June 1Year A

In Matthews Gospel, Jesus talks about the challenge of entering Gods kingdom. Simply relying on talking about God will not do. We are to act in accordance with Gods will.Moses, speaking to the Israelites, calls on them to write that will of God expressed inGods commandments on their heart and soul and mind, to make them part of their very existence. Jesus tells us that if we do not act according to his words we are as foolish as theman is in his little parable.

Our second reading begins a series from Romans. Here Paul explores the relation betweenfaith and law. He is certain that faith is the sole means by which we are put in a rightrelationship with God. Paul will struggle with the relationship between keeping Gods law and the primacy of faith. In the next few weeks, we will join him in that struggle. When in our worship and our personal prayers we call out, Lord, Lord, we mustremember that our words of praise and petition alone are not enough. We are called to bepeople who act as well as talk, who actively carry out Gods will that all people be brought by our words and deeds into Gods kingdom. We are reminded of that in every liturgy when we are dismissed and sent out into the world as ministers of Christ.
