REFLECTION: RECONCILED DIVERSITY... A few years ago, during Rome’s quiet summer, Pope Francis took a day off to visit privately with some old friends, whose identity took Catholic Italy by surprise: Evangelical Protestants. They welcomed Francis to their Pentecostal Church of Reconciliation, where Francis asked pardon for Catholic persecutions and celebrated the Holy Spirit’s “Pentecostal work.” Unlike Satan, declared Francis, who creates division among God’s children, the Holy Spirit creates a diversity rich and beautiful. And unity; not uniformity, Francis specified, but unity in diversity. Francis named the Spirit’s gift “reconciled diversity.” Pentecost’s rich treasury of scriptural read-ings, for Saturday’s vigil and Sunday’s morning liturgy, traces the Holy Spirit’s work from creation’s beginning, through Jesus’ resurrection, into the church’s earliest days, now into our days. Kindled in our hearts, the Spirit’s gentle fire is ours to share generously, even with those most strikingly different from us. All hearts are Spirit-warmed by reconciled diversity. Copyright © J. S. SAINT ANTHONY BREAD... TALE OF 2 BLESSINGS St. Anthony's Bread is an expression of devotion reminding us of St. Anthony's love and aid to the poor when he was alive. The tradition dates back to the 13th century, stemming from a story when a young child fell into a barrel of water and drowned. The mother begged St. Anthony to help, promising to donate grain the weight of her child to the poor if her daughter was restored. The child arose as if asleep, and this began giving alms to the poor for favors in St. Anthony's intercession. In some places the term "St. Anthony's Bread" refers merely to alms and there is no actu-al bread exchanged, but money given to the poor will help them buy food.

The actual name of "St. Anthony's Bread" came from a French woman named Louise Bouffier in 1890, who promised loaves of bread for the poor when St. Anthony helped her with opening the broken lock of her small linen shop. After his help, her shop was the basis of St. Anthony's Bread.

We are now in the midst of the St. Anthony Novena which concludes on his feast day, June 13th. Since we will not have Mass here that day, the Novena will have to be closed at home. On June 12th, the Jioio family will provide loaves of bread that Father will bless and send home with us, after the 8:00AM Mass, reminding us of St. Anthony’s blessings and favor to the poor. St. Anthony of Padua is the patron saint for the original chapel from which our current parish blossomed. We continue to honor him through this novena.

Prayer: Heavenly Father, we praise you and give you glory for the gift of bread, fruit of the earth, work of human hands and source of our daily nourish-ment. Bless + this bread in honor of St. Anthony. Teach us to share all your gifts with the poor, the forsaken and the hungry. All praise be to you through Jesus Christ, our Savior, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. R. Amen.
