‘For even the Son of Man did not come to be served; he came to serve …’ (Mark 10 v 45)
I WANT TO SERVE
What could you do this week to help at home?
Pens PrayerDear Lord God, I want to
help other people. Please
show me how to be kind
and loving. Amen.
‘Oooh!’ giggled Charlotte excitedly. She was going out for the day.
‘Aha!’ grinned Denzil when he’d waved Charlotte goodbye. ‘Now I can do something really special!’
He set to work.
He dusted and polished all the furniture. He wiped out all the cupboards in the kitchen and washed the fl oor. Then he vacuumed all the carpets and plumped up all the cushions. When he’d fi nished, the whole house looked beautiful.
‘Wow!’ exclaimed Charlotte when she got home. ‘What a lovely surprise!’
‘It’s nothing really,’ smiled Denzil. ‘I just wanted to help.’
It makes God happy when we help or serve each other by being kind.
Is there someone you could offer to help this week?
Squiggle and Splodge loved going to school. They loved learning new things. And they especially loved their teacher.
If ever a job needed doing, Squiggle and Splodge were always the fi rst in the class to offer to do it.
‘Who’d like to fetch the paper for painting?’ their teacher might ask.
‘We will!’ squealed Squiggle and Splodge.
‘Who’d like to get the aprons?’
‘We will!’
‘Who’d like to wash up the paint pots and brushes?’
‘We will!’
That was the other thing Squiggle and Splodge really enjoyed about school – helping. They absolutely loved it.
We can serve at school by helping our teachers when they need us to.
‘… let love make you serve one another.’ (Galatians 5 v 13)

Pens PrayerThank You, dear Lord, for all
the things I can do. As I enjoy
them, please show me how
to use them to help others,
too. Amen.
Is there something you enjoy doing that you could share with someone else?
Pens had nothing to do, so Marco said, ‘Let’s show each other how to do the things we really enjoy.’
Marco showed Gloria how to skateboard, and Gloria showed Marco how to make a hat.
Denzil showed Philippa how to ride a bike, and Philippa showed Denzil how to plant seeds in the garden.
Charlotte showed Max how to sing, and Max showed Charlotte how to bounce a football on her head.
‘What a brilliant day!’ agreed Pens. ‘We’ve all shown each other how to do new things.’
God’s given gifts to each of us. Let’s use them to serve and help other people.
‘Each one … must use for the good of others the special gift he has received from God.’ (1 Peter 4 v 10)

Pens PrayerHeavenly Father, You are
always kind and generous.
Help me to be like You.
Amen.
Do you visit a library? How do you get there?
Philippa was fl ustered. She needed to take the books she’d borrowed back to the library.
‘If I don’t hurry,’ she muttered, ‘I’ll miss the bus.’
Philippa put the books in a bag and ran all the way to the bus stop.
‘Catching the bus, Philippa?’ asked Gloria. ‘So am I.’
But when Philippa stepped on board, she realised something dreadful.
‘Oh, no!’ she cried. ‘I was in such a rush, I forgot to bring my money. I can’t pay the fare!’
‘Don’t worry,’ said Gloria kindly. ‘There’s enough in my purse. I’ll pay for us both.’
Being happy to share our money is a way of helping someone in need.
‘You cannot serve both God and money.’ (Matthew 6 v 24)

Pens PrayerDear Lord God, thank You so
much for all the good things
You give me. Help me to share
them with others. Amen.
What’s your favourite television programme?
‘Nearly time! Nearly time!’ chanted Max.
His favourite television programme was starting soon and he was very excited. He made himself a sandwich and poured himself a glass of milk. Then he settled down to watch.
But, all of a sudden, the television went off – PHUTT – just like that.
‘Nooo!’ wailed Max.
Charlotte was passing by. ‘What’s wrong?’ she asked.
‘It’s my television,’ moaned Max. ‘It’s broken and now I’m going to miss my favourite programme.’
‘Come and use mine,’ invited Charlotte. ‘We’ll watch your programme together.’
We can serve and help one another by sharing the things we have.
