We are built on the spirit of our people.

Proud to be part of Australia’s leading city, yet not just another suburb, Penrith is one of the most important regional centres in Greater Sydney.

Boasting mountains, rivers, and more, our shining outdoors keeps us active. Open to new ideas, new people and new cultural expression, our inclusive, innovative spirit is what makes Penrith shine.

Our life is our community.

OUR PLACE

.................................................•JOHN WAKELING IS HEREOwner and creator of the Nepean Belle Paddlewheeler. In 1980 I moved to Penrith from the south coast and discovered that Penrith is every bit as beautiful. So I built the Nepean Belle with my own hands and now 30 years on I still have the same passion for introducing people to our beautiful river.

A perfect balance of rural and urban, Penrith brims with beauty.

The renowned Nepean-Hawkesbury River with the breathtaking Nepean Gorge is the foremost feature. It’s complemented by the surrounding mountains and the vast expanse of Penrith Lakes stretching away to the north.

It’s little wonder visitors fl ock to our city to take advantage of our great outdoors. Penrith Whitewater Stadium is always a popular choice but if you ask a local to name their favourite spot they just might mention Tench Reserve where you can picnic by the river or “The Rock” lookout which is a short drive from the Penrith CBD. (See page 32.)

The people of Penrith are just as unique as the scenery.

We’re quintessential “doers” looking for new and inventive ways of doing things, determined to succeed.

Optimism and courage are qualities we hold dear. We’re proud of our roots and are deeply connected to our land and our community.

Our people have driven the development of cultural institutions which are now magnets for visitors. A local might recommend one of our natural experiences but they might equally recommend that you see the “Joan” (Joan Sutherland Performing Arts Centre), the Penrith Regional Gallery or the Museum of Fire as “must sees”.

In a way, we’re almost spoilt for choice with what we have to offer. Uniquely positioned, there’s nowhere else quite like our wonderful place.

.................................................•MARY HENRY IS HERECommunity Volunteer. We moved to Emu Plains 39 years ago and we’ve never wanted to be anywhere else. I help with Meals on Wheels and at least once a week I walk or cycle to the Visitor Centre to spend the day telling visitors about the place I love.

The mighty Nepean is part of a major river system that surrounds Sydney on three sides. It traverses Penrith from south to north, passing through Nepean Gorge and on to the Pacifi c Ocean.

South of the Penrith city centre, the river and mountains come together at the spectacular Nepean Gorge. To the west the rugged Blue Mountains sweep up to the horizon creating a backdrop that dominates the view in many parts of the city.

If you want to do more than just catch glimpses of the scenery, why not enjoy a river cruise or visit “The Rock” Lookout. Both of these will allow you to enjoy the unique combination of river and mountains at Nepean Gorge. Closer to town you can do all or part of the “Great River Walk”.

You can enjoy a hands-on experience of the Blue Mountains right in Penrith’s backyard at the Glenbrook section of the Blue Mountains National Park. Penrith is also a great base for exploring further afi eld to other parts of the Blue Mountains, including Katoomba and beyond to Jenolan Caves.

Even before the Blue Mountains started to form, a vast fl oodplain developed around the Nepean River just to the north of the present day Penrith city centre.

Regular fl ooding over thousands of years formed deep rich soil, sand and gravel deposits. In the early days of European settlement this became a life saving food bowl. Later, the sand and gravel was mined and used in many of Sydney’s prominent buildings.

A century of quarrying will soon end, bringing on the fi nal phase of converting the quarry site to lakes and parkland. This transition began over 20 years ago with the creation of the Penrith Lakes Scheme and the development of the International Regatta Centre

and Penrith Whitewater Stadium which were the venues for rowing and canoeing in the Sydney 2000 Olympics. These venues continue to host major sporting events, including the Sydney International Rowing Regatta and the Australian Dragon Boat Championships in March and April 2013. (See pages 34-35.)

Penrith Lakes is also home to the Muru Mittigar Aboriginal cultural centre, a unique experience in Greater Sydney.

See page 17 for more information about things to enjoy at Penrith Lakes.

THE GREATRIVER WALKIS HERE

One of the best experiences in Penrith is absolutely free!

Over the past fi ve years Penrith City Council has created almost eight kilometres of walking track along the Nepean River. Known as the “Great River Walk”, it features spectacular views of our beautiful river set against the backdrop of the Blue Mountains.

The walk features resting points and lookouts where you can see bird and other wildlife in a natural setting. There are cultural attractions, including the Penrith Regional Gallery and our local historic museum, the Arms of Australia Inn. There are even places to enjoy a coffee and something to eat.

Recently a number of signs have been installed along the route which will increase your understanding of the cultural and historical context of the river and the life of Penrith.

Most of the track is part of a six kilometre loop that follows the riverbank on both the Penrith and Emu Plains sides of the river. At the northern end of the loop it crosses the river at Victoria Bridge.

At the southern end the walk shares the M4 Motorway bridge. A small side path leads from the north east corner of the loop at Weir Reserve towards Penrith Lakes.

As you can see from the map opposite, the walk is accessible from both Penrith and Emu Plains Railway Stations. Because it is a loop you can start and fi nish anywhere without missing any part of the walk. Lookouts, picnic areas, refreshments and accommodation are available where shown on the map.

As we go to press, the NSW roads authority is fi nalising plans to develop a separate pedestrian bridge at the northern end near Victoria Bridge which will improve safety and convenience for pedestrians.

There is a grand vision to develop The “Great River Walk” to link the river’s headwaters at Lake Bathurst near Goulburn with the mouth of the river at Broken Bay, a distance of 570 km. Penrith is the fi rst Council along the river to start to embrace this vision.

............................................................•VANESSA CAMPBELL IS HEREMother of two young children and operator of a marketing and event business. We decided to raise our family in Penrith because it’s affordable and close to the river. (By the way that’s me on the right enjoying the Great River Walk with one of my friends and our kids). While Penrith has good schools, hospitals and a university, the best thing is the community spirit. The relaxed lifestyle allows me to balance the needs of my family and the challenges of running a business. I know that as my children grow, Penrith will allow them to excel.

DAY TRIPS FROM HEREPenrith is a very convenient base to see much of Greater Sydney and the Blue Mountains.

BLUE MOUNTAINS

Just west of Penrith, Glenbrook Village has cafés, nurseries, arts and crafts, parks and a friendly family run cinema. It’s the gateway to the Blue Mountains National Park where you can see native animals in the wild at Euroka Clearing, swim in mountain pools, stay for a picnic, take a walk or bike ride and see Aboriginal rock carvings. Look back over Penrith and Greater Sydney from the nearby Mount Portal Lookout or down into Nepean Gorge from Nepean Lookout.

GREATER SYDNEY

The historic towns of Richmond and Windsor are only a short drive north from Penrith past Penrith Lakes. Here you will get a taste of early Australian history, as well as historic pubs and antique and craft shops.

One of Australia’s largest and most awarded native wildlife collections is at Featherdale Wildlife Park at Doonside, near Blacktown, just a short drive east of Penrith.

Spend some time looking through Australia’s oldest European buildings in Parramatta. The Rivercat ferry along Parramatta River is a relaxing and scenic way to get to Circular Quay which is close to The Rocks, Opera House, Royal Botanic Gardens and is the hub for ferries and cruises on Sydney Harbour.

Sydney Olympic Park, between Parramatta and Sydney, was the venue for the 2000 Sydney Olympics and is now the home of various sporting, event and entertainment attractions.

Follow the Hawkesbury Harvest farm gate trail south along The Northern Road to Picton and Camden, sampling, purchasing and picking fresh produce. Call in to wineries at Luddenham and Camden and get honey fresh from the hives at Blue Mountains Honey Shed in Luddenham.

PENRITH CELEBRATES FIRST CROSSING OF THE BLUE MOUNTAINSOUR ROLE IN THE MAKING OF A GREAT NATIONIn May 2013 Penrith will celebrate the bicentenary of its role as the departure point for the fi rst crossing of the Blue Mountains by European settlers.

During those early years after European settlement in 1788, the fl edgling colony of New South Wales struggled to survive. During those grim years Penrith helped save the colony by supplying grain, vegetables and livestock produced on the productive land around the Nepean River.

Everything changed in May 1813 when the famous trio of explorers, Blaxland, Wentworth and Lawson set off from South Creek, near the modern day St Marys. They discovered that by following the ridges, rather than the valleys, they could reach the vast agricultural plains of western NSW.

This led to a massive growth in agricultural production and the development of a prosperous export driven economy. It was the fi rst step on the road to Australia becoming the great trading nation and economic power that it is today.

MAY 2013 CELEBRATIONS

Penrith City Council is working with neighbouring councils to mark the bicentenary of this pivotal event in Australian history.

The program of historically themed events will include an early breakfast at South Creek Farm and a re-enactment of the explorers’ departure on their historic trek. Later that day the re-enactment will arrive at Weir Reserve on the banks of the Nepean River where there will be an historic family night under the stars. The next weekend will see an historic festival at Mamre House in St Marys and a week later a “back to Emu Plains” event.

Full details are available from the Penrith Visitor Information Centre on 1300 736 836, email [email protected] go to www.bluemountainscrossings.com.au

OUR EVENT PATRONActor Jack Thompson is the face of these celebrations, which are being supported by community-minded local business, JK Williams. An obvious choice to be the face of the event, Jack is well known for his love of the Australian bush and Australian history and is keen to bring attention and recognition to these early explorers.

“I’m delighted to be participating in the Bicentenary of the First Crossing of the Blue Mountains. It is such a signifi cant event in Australia’s history. It opened up new horizons for us in every respect. I’m particularly interested in the wonderful Australian writing that is now one of the other great legacies of the First Crossing and I encourage all Australians to get to know this remarkable part of our story”.

Access to the lookouts is only available during daylight hours..Other lookouts nearby which overlook Penrith, the Nepean River and Penrith Lakes are the Mount Portal Lookout (Glenbrook), and Hawkesbury Heights Lookout.

Other picnic spots which are a short drive from Penrith are Warragamba Dam, Bents Basin, Blue Mountains National Park, Glenbrook Park, Windsor, Richmond, Prospect Reservoir, Kurrajong Heights and Nurragingy Reserve.

DRAGON BOATS WILL BE HERE

Penrith is well known as a venue for rowing and canoeing. Now dragon boat racing is emerging as an alternative form of water racing that has transformed itself from a novelty event to a serious international sport in which Australia excels.

April 2013 will see the International Regatta Centre at Penrith hosting the Australian Dragon Boat Racing Championships soon after the World Rowing Cup in March. Over 3,000 competitors from all over Australia will be competing in open, mixed and women’s events.

Clubs will also be competing to qualify for the World Championships in Italy in 2014. For more information go to www.dbnsw.org.au or www.ausdbf.com.au.

WE LEARNHEREPenrith parents can choose from 59 primary and 22 high schools, including the selective Penrith High and St Marys Senior High. There are also leading private schools such as St Paul’s Grammar, Penrith Anglican College and Penrith Christian School which all cater for K-12.

Penrith City Council and private providers operate 112 childcare centres with 0-2 places offered at many of the Council run centres.

Tertiary education is available at the Penrith campus of the University of Western Sydney which enjoys growing recognition for its teaching and research. Technical training is available from the well recognised Western Sydney Institute of TAFE.

WORLD ROWING WILL BE HERE

Penrith will be hosting Australia’s fi rst international rowing event since the Sydney 2000 Olympics at the Sydney International Regatta Centre.

The Sydney International Rowing Regatta will be held in March 2013 and 2014. It will combine the Samsung World Cup, the Australian Championships and the premium domestic events, the King’s and Queen’s Cups, into a week long festival.

This will be the fi rst time the Samsung World Rowing Cup has been held in Australia. It is one of several major world events which lead up to the annual World Championships to be held in South Korea in August – September 2013.

The event will attract the best rowing talent from about 50 countries, including medallists from the 2012 London Olympics. Aussie Beijing medallists, David Crawley and Scott Brenna (pictured top left) will be competing. Kim Crow (pictured top right) who won

silver in London in the Women’s Double Sculls, is the offi cial event ambassador and will also be competing.

Just as with the Olympics, you don’t need to be a rowing fanatic to enjoy the experience. Rowing Australia is working with Penrith City Council and Destination NSW to stage a festival with broad appeal.

The 2013 event will start on Monday 18 March with the Australian Open Championships running through the week. The King’s and Queen’s Cups will be held on Saturday 23 March. The climax will be the fi nals of the Australian School Championships and the Samsung World Cup on Sunday 24 March.

Tickets are available through Ticketek. Please check with the Penrith Visitor Information Centre or at the offi cial event web site www.rowingdownunder.org for more information.

...................................................•JESSICA FOX IS HEREOlympic Silver Medallist in Canoe Slalom London 2012It’s August 2012. I’m receiving the silver medal for the Women’s K1 slalom event in front of a cheering crowd and a worldwide television audience. I can’t believe I am on the podium with Emily Fer of France and Maielen Chourraut from Spain. I also can’t believe that I beat many great athletes including Stepanka Hilgertova who won gold just ahead of my mum when she represented France in the same event in 1996! I’ve just turned 18 and would have been happy just to qualify for the fi nals in my fi rst Olympics.

My dad is a multiple world champion in canoe slalom for Great Britain. He worked hard with the City of Penrith to infl uence the decision to develop Penrith Whitewater Stadium and have canoe slalom included in the Sydney Olympics. That was a good choice as it is still one of the best facilities in the world and a great place to train, race or just play.I think about my home in Penrith and especially my second home at Penrith Whitewater Stadium where I train. I think about the people of Penrith, the river and mountains and everyone who has supported me. My family, my school and our community. I may be half a world away but I can loudly and proudly say thank you all for your support, “PENRITH IS HERE”
